Do internship opportunities @ISI open up to non-ISI UG students?

heya, currently pursuing BSQFE [Bsc in quantitative finance and economics] and was wondering if I could bag a summer internship in ISI in the QE department? Do they even open up internship opportunities for non-ISI UG students? If they do, how should I go about trying to land an internship? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A comprehensive review of Afterboards !!

So, I did my IPMAT 2026 prep almost exclusively from Afterboards (used quantum cat and pearson VARC occasionally to refer to theory) and managed to score 213 (32/41/140) in it.

I am making this post mainly to help out future aspirants (I am also really bored cuz college isnt starting yet and I love yapping online :p). I also hope that this post will be able to give some ideas to the afterboards team on where they could potentially improve!

Okay, so this post is gonna follow the various steps one goes through while studying for IPMAT in chronological order.

1. Motivation to study

obviously, to start prepping for IPMAT, you need to get motivated to study. I think that afterboards absolutely nails this with their oranges system and leaderboards. Heck, i'd even go as far as to say that afterboards probably does one of the best jobs at motivating students to study in the entirity of the indian ed tech industry. I found myself hooked to studying just to get on the weekly and monthly leaderboards and to rank up on the overall leaderboard. The daily RC and weekly DILR streak is also very cool!

BUT, even though afterboards does a great job at it, I do think that they can still improve here. My main complaint would be that the points (oranges) system is a little broken. One could just grind easy and quick CUET english topic tests and gain tonnes of oranges but make very little progress in their prep overall [totally didnt do this sometimes myself ;)] and lose their precious prep time. Maybe a points system proportional to the difficulty of the questions solved could work better here.

2. Theory lectures

This is one of the very few areas where I think that there are other platforms out there which might be better than afterboards depending on your base in quants.

Afterboards has very short and to the point video lectures for each topic and type of question in a particular chapter (for quants, few DILR topics and RCs only afaik). I have only watched some of the quants lectures, hence I will only be talking about them here.

While the video lectures are amazing and crisp for someone with a decent base in quants and for revision, I think that there are better options out there for someone who is starting from scratch or has a weak base in quants because there are usually only 2-3 questions solved per question type (afaik, other coachings usually solve a few more questions than this) with very little time to process each question being solved, so you'll have to pause the video and process it. Again, its not particularly bad perse, its just that I personally think that there are better options available for people who have a weak base in quants.

3. Question solving

Afterboards nails this really well too! they have an insane amount of questions and they are very systematically arranged. I also really love the concept of adaptive sectionals, they are very cool!

Topic tests as a concept are fantastic, once you solve 5 difficulty wise questions, you're eligible to go to the next level. BUT, I really dislike the fact that I can't choose the number of questions that I want to attempt per level, and the fact that once I cross a level, I cant really solve the questions of that particular level again. This particularly stings when you're in the later stages of your prep and you get rusty in a certain topic so you wanna revise from level 1 but you only have the 5 questions per level you previously solved to review. If we could get a choice to choose any level of questions after we're done with all the 4 levels, that would be awesome!

All in all, afterboards is the best out there for question solving by miles imho.

4. Mocks

I think that this is perfect the way it is, 0 complaints here. They have plenty of mocks with various difficulty levels, ranks, goated analysis tools and 0 wrong questions. The UI is also pretty close to the actual exam!

If you're an aspirant reading this, solve as many mocks as you can kiddo, don't sleep out on them due to fear or laziness!

5. Mock discussions and community engagement

I think that this is pretty sorted as well with the addition of the forum. You could just post a mock and ask anyone for help with what you could do better and more often than not, one of the mentors will respond.

As for community engagement, the forum is a place for academic and non academic doubts alike! it is heavily inspired by reddit and I love it! no complaints here.

6. Revision

The tools provided for revision are great provided that you solve a good amount of questions throughout your prep. You can sort the questions difficulty wise, topicwise, analyse a particular mock/sectional/topic test etc. Pretty good overall!

--------------

All in all I think that afterboards is pretty close to being a one stop solution for most aspirants. The only reason I can think of to need any sort of supplementary material is for theory or if you exhaust everything that afterboards has to offer!

Thats all from me, if you have any questions feel free to drop them in the comments. I'll be happy to answer them :]

Thoughts on IIT Patna and IIM BG's new B.Tech + MBA?

Personally, not a huge fan of it since it cuts down a year in a 4 year degree (which means tonnes of extra workload in 3 years to gather the credits quicker) and well, BTech and MBA are very different disciplines. I feel that a pivot after you realise that you don't like tech or wanna get into managerial positions after graduating from a BTech college makes much more sense. This just feels like its designed to lure students in with the "IIT-IIM Tag".

I hope that I'm proved wrong and this programme turns out to be super successful though!!

Would love to hear your thoughts on this as well

My opinion on why IPMAT cannot be JEEfied

Long yap incoming but I promise it'll be a fun read :]

Recently, I came across a comment on the subreddit mentioning "don't JEENEETify IPMAT". This got me thinking, is IPMAT really getting JEEfied? I don't think so, and I don't think it ever will!

Let's start with this, why is JEE the way it is?

Imo, jee and neet are the way they are because

  1. The only factor students are evaluated on is their score in the written exam, no interview, nothing.

  2. There are a lot of seats in top institutes like IITs/NITs/BITs, even though there is immense competition, this creates the illusion that even if the student does slip up a bit in the exam, he can still get into a good college.

  3. Coaching institutes overhyping and over glorifying toppers and IITians. Most coaching institutes brainwash students into believing that the only path to success is to go to an IIT or a tier 1 engineering college.

Now, let's see how IPMAT is different,

  1. IPMAT obviously has an interview process for most colleges. This forces aspirants to have good communicational skills at the very least. And how do you get this communicational skill? By having a life and talking to various people. The exam encourages you to not no life studies.

  2. IPMAT is much easier than JEE. No IPMAT aspirant should ever need to study nearly as much as someone who gets into an IIT. Naturally, this gives aspirants more free time.

  3. The exam is extremely ambiguous, it doesn't have a defined syllabus and it can be unpredictable, especially VARC. You can't guarantee that you'll do well in VARC no matter how much you practice simply because of the unpredictability of the questions. You could encounter multiple words which you dont know the meaning of. Don't even get me started on parajumbles. The interview process also adds a layer to this. No amount of hard work can guarantee a successful interview.

  4. There aren't nearly enough seats in IIMs for their IPM programmes for most people to justify prepping for IPMAT. I'm sure that most aspirants are frightened by the little number of seats offered by these institutions for their category.

  5. Since there aren't that many people giving the exam every year, there aren't many coaching centres either. And most of the major coaching institutes are online and they're surprisingly ethical (afterboards (not exactly a coaching but meh, I'll include it here anyway), aceipm etc). I dont think that I've ever come across a coaching in the IPMAT space claiming that getting into an IIM is the only path to success which is nice.

  6. IPMAT is EXPENSIVE. You're almost guaranteed to dish out a good amount of money if you do get into any IPM programme unless you get a scholarship (very rare). Yes, private engineering and mbbs colleges cost a fortune too but most parents and students believe that they are capable of cracking a govt college which is relatively cheaper.

If you've read this far, tysm for listening to my yap. If you haven't noticed already, I'm extremely unemployed and bored beyond belief.

If you're a 27 or 28tard reading this, go study. You shouldn't waste your time on reddit. Tumhara exam abhi tak khatam nahi hua hai :]

Gonna move to amritsar soon for college!

Heya, so I'm gonna be moving to amritsar for my bachelors from next month, I've always lived in bangalore (though I'm originally marwari and know hindi very well). What are some culture shocks I should be aware of? Any other tips? I'm also vegetarian so I hope that won't be too much of a problem.

Tysm in advance!

Case comps

Do colleges reimburse you for the costs you incur while you go to a case comp in a different city? I mean flights and stuff aren't cheap, neither is accommodation.

Thinking out loud

How hard is it to simplify the admissions process? Genuinely.

Why can we not consolidate ipmat indore, rohtak and jipmat into one exam and force all the IIMs to release results on a set date together. Having results releasing one by one, with no clue about when the next set of results will come out, with almost no transparency about anything from some IIMs is so frustrating. How hard is it to commit to a date and show basic transparency and ethics. These are supposed to be the best management colleges in the country btw, yet they can't manage their own selection process efficiently.

Attempting to predict IIM Jammu 2026 cutoffs using statistics

Hiya, so i recently posted about BG cutoffs, but that got me wondering, is there really no way to predict jammu cutoffs?? I collected so much data so there has to be a way to predict jammu cutoffs too.

Then an idea clicked. What if i tried to extrapolate the graph of 2026 marks vs percentile using the data points which I collected earlier and assigned random board marks values from 85 to 97 to the top 1000 rankers, ran the simulation a 100,000 times and calculated the average of the composite scores for the first list cutoff, the upper limit of final cutoff, and the final cutoff if the waitlist remains the same as last year.

Composite score formula : percentile × 0.7 + 10th board marks × 0.15 + 12th board marks × 0.15

So, thats exactly what I did!!

I'm not going to go into too much detail on how I extrapolated the graph, you'll just have to trust me on this but I used this technique called PCHIP (Piecewise Cubic Hermite Interpolating Polynomial). You can google it to learn more about it if you wanna!

not the prettiest chart i know but we work with what we have (in short i was too lazy to make it pretty)

Now that we have our marks, percentiles and ranks of each of the top 1000 candidates, I assigned them random board scores (between 85 and 97) a 100,000 times and calculated the average composite scores of rank 69 (nice, first list cutoff), rank 200 (upper limit of final list cutoff), rank 250 (if the waitlist movement remains the same as last year). Here, have a look!

https://preview.redd.it/hyvg5292csbh1.png?width=1919&format=png&auto=webp&s=9119750128336ba267805a61922b59f5957c51b3

so, according to this, the composite score cutoffs for general category should be as follows:

  1. first list cutoff : 97.09
  2. upper limit of final cutoff : 96.10
  3. If waitlist movement remains the same as last year : 95.79

BUT, theres a catch. I set the board scores to be anywhere between 85 to 97, but honestly, this might not be very accurate, if I were to shift the board scores to be between say 88 to 97, just a 3% increase in the lower limit, this is what the simulation says.

yikes, that's a huge jump

though i agree putting 88 as the lower limit is a bit too much, what im trying to get to with this is the fact that board scores matter a LOT, so this simulation might be off by a bit.

NOTE : 1. The waitlist movement is very volatile so the cutoffs might go lower or higher than this.
2. Board marks matter a lot so this might be inaccurate.
3. I'm just a student like you, with no formal education in statistics so my methodology might be completely off.

That being said, I hope that i'm able to reduce the number of "chances for jammu?" posts on the subreddit through this (gosh im tired of seeing 20 posts everyday on this).

That is all from me! see ya. As always feel free to drop a comment or reach out to me in DMs if you have any queries or suggestions.

IIM Shillong result update (not out yet, just an update)

Recently I emailed them asking for when the results would be out and they responded by sending me a link to the ipm admissions page on their website and said that "kindly refer to this" so it would be safe to assume that the merit list prep is on schedule and should be out in the second week of july :]

If you're confused about baby IIMs being worth it or not, have a look at this chart

IIM Amritsar hasn't posted its average package since 2024 hence why the graph doesn't contain the 2024 and 2025 amritsar data.

This just goes to show how fast baby IIMs are growing.
IIM Jammu --> 58% in 7 years
IIM BG --> 40% in 8 years
IIM Amr --> 61% in 6 years before they stopped posting their average package

Youll be graduating after 5 years if you join the college this year, i'm sure you're smart enough to make a guesstimate of how much the average package could be during the year which you graduate in :]

Sambalpur is the goat

They released the results so quickly after taking interviews so late. Kudos to them, these other IIMs take a shit tonne of time for no reason at all. Jammu and bg are on another level, they dont even need to take interviews, and yet their results are gonna come out so late

JIPMAT 2026 : Here's what the data says

So, recently I collected a tonne of data in this post. Tysm yall for giving me a good amount of data to work with.

So heres what I wanna show you with the help of this post

  1. Should you rely on the past year cutoffs?
  2. Your chances for IIM BG [can't say for jammu cuz of the weird board mark weightage]

1. 2025 vs 2026 Marks vs Percentile analysis

heres a neat graph which I was able to make using your data :]

So what this graph tells us about the exam is that scoring a really good score this year was equally hard if not harder than last year, but scoring an above average/good score was much easier.

BUT, theres a twist. This graph paints a really bleak picture, the actual situation might not be as bleak because of the fact that considerably fewer people appeared for the exam as compared to 2025 [11527 vs 12939]. What this does is it makes it harder to get a better percentile this year.

For example, to get 90%ile in 2025, you had to get a rank of 1294 whereas in 2026 you had to get a rank of 1153

This is exactly why I have prepared another graph which should give us a clearer picture.

2. 2025 vs 2026 Marks vs Rank analysis

https://preview.redd.it/ip9mx2uh5uah1.png?width=1234&format=png&auto=webp&s=2c16eca6592fbff61ed13152e6cf24a2981b63ba

This graph shows us the most accurate picture of JIPMAT 2026 when compared to 2025 imho. Yeah the rank inflation is crazy, so dont rely on last year's percentile or marks for the cutoff, rely on the last year's last admitted rank which is around 431 at 290 marks for BG which equates to roughly 300 marks in jipmat 2026

3. IIM BG Cutoffs : what to expect?

so, here are my predictions for IIM BG cutoffs for the general category which might help you decide whether you should book a seat at another college or wait for BG to release their merit lists.
NOTE : This only holds true if IIM BG releases the merit lists in a similar fashion as last time

  1. First list - 336+ marks [99.41+%ile]
  2. Nearly guaranteed - 325+ marks [98.8+%ile]
  3. Good chance - 308+ marks [97.25+%ile]
  4. Borderline - 300+ marks [96.2+%ile]

again, take this with a grain of salt since we dont know how jammu's new merit list criteria will alter the waitlist movement and yeah, all the predictions are slightly highballed since I dont wanna give anyone false hope :]

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to drop them in the comments or DM me. K byeee
