Looking for good turn-based strategy game with high replayability

Looking for some turn-based strategy/tactics game recommendations.

I’ve already played XCOM and XCOM 2 (plus dlc and the long war) and enjoyed both.

Doesn’t have to be exactly like XCOM though. I’m pretty open on setting/theme too sci-fi, fantasy, historical, milsim, whatever.

Main thing I’m looking for is something with good tactical combat and a good amount of replayability. Ideally something I can get a lot of hours out of through the base game, DLC, different campaigns/builds/factions, mods, etc.

Some kind of progression or customization between battles would be a bonus too.

Open to older games and indies as well.

Would also love to hear why you recommend it, especially what makes it stand out or keeps you coming back to it.

LF Army building advice

Hey all!

Never played 40k before and checked out my LGS but sadly they don't even sell 40k stuff anymore cause it was never popular. So I'm checking out TTS as a way to get into it.

I have the workshop mods needs to get my army together, got a copy of the rules but I have an odd problem... I don't really understand how to build an army lol

I have heard "just pick units you like" which is good and all but I do want to understand how to build armies and the purpose of units.

If anyone has some advice or videos that would be much appreciated! Looking to just start with 1000 for now.

I'm interested in a few factions to get started with to learn army building:

  • Black Templars
  • Necrons
  • Tyranids
  • T'au

Gears Tactics Modding

I’ve been digging pretty heavily into Gears Tactics modding lately (the first game I have tried to mod before too!) and wanted to share what I have so far with the community or for anyone else interested in experimenting with the game.

NOTE: The following tools are in alpha, can experience bugs and I always recommend backing your stuff up.

I’ve also been working on two tools:

Gears Tactics Mod Manager
Nexus Link: https://www.nexusmods.com/gearstactics/mods/29

A manager for not just CSV based mods but asset mods with backups, mod importing, load order handling, conflict detection, and smarter merging so using multiple mods doesn’t require manually replacing files every time.

Gears Tactics Asset Tool
Nexus Link: https://www.nexusmods.com/gearstactics/mods/30

A much earlier project focused on inspecting and extracting the game’s assets and figuring out more of its internal file/container formats.

So far with this tool I have been able to mod my game to swap out textures and make changes to assets (weapons at this time) by modifying the underlying files. As I found that simply editing CSV files has its limitations and sometimes is overriden by the Unreal assets that are bundled in the game. Example mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/gearstactics/mods/32

I’ve created a Discord for mod releases, troubleshooting, tools, reverse-engineering discoveries, and general modding discussion. If you’ve made mods before, want to learn, or are just interested in seeing what can actually be changed in Gears Tactics, you’re welcome to join.

Discord: https://discord.gg/6SHkQpPtgk

Still early days, but I’m hoping to build up some proper documentation and make Gears Tactics modding a little more accessible.

New player - vanilla or long war 2?

New to xcom2, would you recommend playing through vanilla (with the dlc) or jump into long war 2?

Additionally: Any mods that are good to pick up to help with any QoL?

Update: Thanks everyone! Going to start off with vanilla ironman!
