Opening date for new Ivor Strong Bridge announced: province
Many Calgary commuters may be happy to hear the latest about the new Ivor Strong bridge, with a provincial announcement of a scheduled July 27th opening date.
The structure will carry all southbound traffic, while the existing bridge will be dedicated to northbound flow once rehabilitation is complete.
Each bridge will include four lanes in each direction and, according to the province, will reduce congestion for thousands of daily commuters.
As well, it’s hoped the project will help ease the commute from the downtown core to southeast Calgary, which has seen more bottlenecks in recent months.
However, construction work will continue on Deerfoot Trail, a project with a $700 million price tag and includes an approximate 70 kilometers of lane resurfacing and 40 kilometers of lane widening.
“And I encourage all drivers to safely drive by our roadside workers and let’s make sure that everyone can get home safely,” Alberta Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen told a Tuesday news conference, “Our contractors are working diligently to complete additional paving, bridge and to install barriers and lighting.”
Dreeshen says when improvements are finished, commuters are projected to save about 20% from their daily commutes, or roughly 1 million hours every year.

mensjournal.comTwo youths, adult rescued from Bow River near Edworthy Park
A rescue on the Bow River on Tuesday is prompting renewed warnings about fast‑moving water and hazardous river conditions.
Fire crews were called just before noon to an area downstream of Edworthy Park, where an adult and two youths were found in the river holding onto a cluster of trees.
Two rescue boats brought the group safely back to shore, and crews recovered their paddleboards and belongings. All three were wearing lifejackets and were not hurt.
Calgary Fire Department spokesperson Alex Kwan says the rescue highlights why a river safety advisory remains in place. The Bow River is flowing at more than 500 cubic meters per second, nearly double the level where advisories are normally issued.
Upstream high‑flow warnings have added even more water and debris, making navigation difficult and increasing the risk of being pushed into hazards.
“It’s not suitable for recreational activities right now,” says Kwan. “All the upstream areas have had high flow advisories and warnings, so there’s a lot more water than when we had our last river advisory.”
The fire department issued the advisory on Monday, urging everyone to stay off both the Bow and Elbow Rivers.
Officials are asking people to reschedule any river activities until conditions improve, and reminding cyclists and pedestrians to watch for submerged pathways in low‑lying areas. They’re also asking Calgarians to share these safety messages with friends and family.
