First build prep, "King of Tone" clone, importance of diode selection?

First build prep, "King of Tone" clone, importance of diode selection?

I have had a lot of fun recently fixing and modding some old Ibanez 9 series pedals. I ordered PCBs for a treble booster and a king of tone from Aion FX. I've been studying the build guides and adding parts to my cart on amplified parts.

The only thing I can't find on that site is the right diodes. They don't have BAS33 or any of the substitutes. Can I use a 1N914 in place of a BAS33?

Also, for the treble booster (Aion FX Naga Viper clone), is it worth getting a variety of different transistors to test? Thanks!

Super Reverb for super clean basement amp?

I've gotten back into guitar recently, and love tinkering with old electronics to pass the time. I haven't rebuilt a basket case amp in 10 years, and want an excuse to do it again. A wealthy buddy is rebuilding one of his garages into a jam session space, and is thinking about hosting jam sessions. This is a great excuse to get a ridiculously over powered amp.

My main amp is a hardwired AC15. It is awesome. I love the overdrive tone. My classic rock drive tone base is fully covered. However, it lacks headroom. I'm kind of on a pedal kick, and increasingly like playing classic country, and have been thinking about a higher wattage amp to serve as a sparkling clean tone and pedal platform.

I was thinking of trying to scratch build a Tweed bassman for this, but I also love the black face fender clean tone. I recently spotted a silverface super reverb with a broken cab for $500 on Facebook locally. This looks like a fun project.

Is it so powerful that I won't be able to get a sound out of it without blowing out a wall? Are there audio taper pots to smooth out the transition from silence to super loud? I'm thinking about replacing the ground and standby switches with a resistor based attenuator and a master volume. Will the cleans still sparkle?

I've never played a super reverb, but used to play a twin reverb and love that. However, the lower maintenance of fewer power tubes, the sag from a tube rectifier, and the punchiness of 4x10 speakers seem like a plus.

Any advice appreciated.

Finally finishing up my pedal board

I have a thing for old Ibanez effects. Just got the FL9 today, which has been on my list for a few decades. Also got my upgraded power supply, which is so big i will need to angle grind some tabs on the bottom to make it fit. This thing sounds great. I'm pretty happy with this setup into a clean amp. Into a dimed amp, I just run my modded TS9DX as a boost.

I'm thinking of trying to build a Dallas Rangemaster clone next, potentially followed by a king of tone clone.

Ibanez FL9 vs FL301

I am trying to round out my pedal board. I like old analog pedals, and my current collection looks like an Ibanez/Maxon 9 series advertisement. Anyway, I've had an analog flanger on the back of my mind for years. I prefer more subtle modulation.

I was perusing the internet for FL9s when I discovered a few FL301s for a similar price. I'm wondering if these are a "hidden gem" I should consider? I know they're 18v. Do I simply plug it into the 18v plug on my power supply board, or is powering it more involved? Would I miss the delay knob on the older version? There are fewer demos of the 301 vs the 9 series.

Maxon super metal 9, resurrected from near death

I posted awhile back about an old SM9 that I realized had a cracked case. It was worse than i thought. The cracks went all the way through the case. I tried coating the inside cracks with jb weld, but the outside cracks got worse. Most of the stubs for the screws broke off. Total basket case.

With nothing to lose, I modded the circut and doubled the output without changing the tone. I then coated the outside cracks with JB weld, and reformed the screw holes with jb weld and an m3 tap.

It is now ugly as hell, but it works! And at lower gain settings, it has well above unity gain, so it's now useful. I consider this a success.

Dead 1.6 revision. Capacitors have left the chat

Someone gave me a "working" 1.6 revision xbox. When I tried to turn it on, the loading screen flickered in and out a bit. Tried again tonight, and it was totally dead. I took it apart expecting a dead clock capacito, but it turns out this is a 1.6 board. No damage to the board itself, but these large capacitors are clearly bulging and leaking. I don't have the time to work on another hard mod at present. Should I just desolder these caps to prevent damage and clean it up?

fixing/reinforcing cracked pedal housing?

I have a vintage Maxon SM9. The previous owner did not skip leg day (or maybe taco tuesday) based on the condition of the enclosure. There are multiple stress cracks.

While I am not a hard stomper, I'm wondering if anything can be done to help it last longer? Would some kind of epoxy carefully squeezed into the cracks work?

Shaddowless Charizard?

My dad just road tripped half way across the country to give me the last of my childhood toys. Among them were my Pokémon cards. I used to play the card game. I've been reading up on editions and values and going through what I have. It appears the rarest one is this. Is this in fact a "shaddowless Charizard?" If so, is this good enough condition that I should get it graded?
