smell the roses

When was the last time someone bought you flowers? I was thinking about it and for me it was once, ever, and I am 40. I don't buy into the masc/femme crap but if pushed I would suppose I present more masc, but I still like flowers! They look and smell wonderful! Have we just abandoned them as a community?

In case you are curious, I have a cat, so no lillies as they are toxic to them. Carnations are for people in the hospital or getting ready to shuffle off this mortal plain. Roses are over-priced and boring. I like Gladiolus, Bells of Ireland, Freesia and Snapdragons.

My Victorian Nightmare

Is anyone else listening to this splendid pod? I am obsessed. I love the stories, her voice and her delivery. I have been listening every night to fall asleep but am slowly running out of episodes (and am on a limited budget to pay for so many that I like), so any similar pod suggestions would be very welcome!

the corner of my bed

My cat does not sleep with me, but he comes on the bed frequently to say hello or have a brief cuddle. Often, at night, I will feel him jump up on the bed and look down to see that he is sound asleep on his chair in the living room (my place is open concept). It's always the bottom corner of the bed on the side I don't sleep on. Sometimes I will be awake in the night and swear I can feel movement there. The other day I was reading in bed and he was actually in that spot, resting in the "loaf" pose, and he suddenly jumped up in the air and ran away, which is pretty unlike him. For an insane moment in the night I was like, could a mouse have nested in my mattress? No, nothing there.

Context, I have a tiny but beautiful apartment in a 130 year old building. My mattress was a very mistaken purchase and is a crappy spring one so you can feel everything. My cat is rarely skittish about anything, new people, dogs, he is chill, but he has been watching my bed as if he sees something moving. And, thank god, no, it is not bedbugs or anything like that.

phone stuff

I am going insane. Last month I applied for a small loan from Money Mart, there was a slight problem with my ID photo being blury so I re-sent and loan went through. I paid it back but find myself behind again this month. So I applied again several days ago via the app and my loan is still pending. I missed one call from them. I cannot call them back as I need to give my phone company some $ in order to make outgoing calls. I have emailed them several times and just get an auto reply saying please call us to discus your loan. I tried using WhatsApp but doesn't work as it's a 1800 number. GoogleVoice doesn't work in Canada. I tried going in to a location but they told me the operate seperate from the online or app.

Any ideas?

Naltroxone

Have you tried Naltroxone to curb your alcohol cravings, and what were your experiences? I have been on the full dose (did half dose for four days) for about five days. My drinking hasn't changed much, though there have been more moments when I look at a drink at the store and feel bored or disinterested in all the options, but the nausea is brutal! I moved it from morning to night with a full meal and usually wake up around 2 or 3AM feeling sick, then it lingers when I get up around 8.

Does this go away?

My Grandfather, Charles Manson

Has anyone else seen this new doc? I watched it with a friend and she and I could only really pay half attention in between laughing. It is just my opinion, and maybe it makes me a jerk, but come on, really? She is crying on camera because she found out that her grandfather, who she never knew (her father never knew him either), was Manson. Saying things like "my blood did those horrible things". The entire thing just felt like a pathetic money grab.

Oh, and then she changes her name from Arguelles to Maddox!

Sure, it would be weirded out, but not this level of melodrama.

Spooky object

So, to be clear, I've never felt anything or had anything weird happen with this... art piece... but come on!

My mom was living in a small city in China and stumbled into an Icelandic art gallery that was going out of business. This was their last night open, so she drank vodka with them and bought me... this.

A cat must have three different names

How many names does your cat have? Formally, this is Mingus (after Charles), but he is also Sleepy Woo, or Silly Woo, Sweetie or Stumpy (He hates it when I tease him about his slightly short legs)

And, if you're not familiar, do yourself a favour and look up the delightful poem The Naming of Cats by T.S. Elliot

Weird signs

Trigger warning, animal death

So, I have been house sitting for a friend and this morning was my last. I took the dog out for a walk and came back to find a dead baby bird on the front porch. We passed by it and I cleaned it up later without thinkind much of it.

I'm home now. My apartment building is 130 years old, for reference. I looked over from my desk and saw a near dead mouse crawling across the floor. I don't know if my cat got to it or what but it didn't seem to be able to use its back legs.

I got rid of it, but feel really spooked now. Is this some kind of sign?

Books!

Any other readers out there? Any book clubs out there? What are you reading right now?

I have just finished The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel which was lovely. There were points where it dragged a bit, and the jumping around in time was just on the edge of being clumsy, but I loved the story and the way the whole thing had a dream-like quality to it.

Currently I am reading The Stranger Beside Me, by Anne Rule (the classic about Ted Bundy), Bread Of Angels by Patti Smith (my personal saint), Just Good Manners, by William Hanson (a fun ettiquite guide because I love his podcast) and am falling asleep to the audio book of The Mist, by Stephen King.

tarnishing silver

Any tips for tarnishing silver? I tried the hard boiled egg method.

Here is the catch, I want to oxodize silver plated plates with engraving on them that exposes the copper under. I use a black, white-board marker or a white grease crayon to make the markings before I engrave, but then I need to wipe, or wash that off and it takes away most of the patina that I still want there.

Neighbourhoods

Question, for your mental health would you rather be somewhat well off in a "poorer" neighbourhood or poorer in a well off area? I've lived in my place for years but could not afford to move into my area now. It's nice to have access to very good coffee and have one of the best bakeries in the city near by, but I can't afford to eat at most of the places I walk past every day.

glass etching

Has anyone found / used something like an acid pen to etch on glass? My dream would be something kinda like a sharpie that you can write / draw quickly with but that acid etches the glass.

Ketamine therapy

Hey Folks,

Just thought I would put this out there; I did four sessions of ketamine therapy for treatment resistant major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder if anyone has questions.

I was really nervous going in as I have never done psychadelic drugs recreationally and was warned I might have very nice or very scary visions.

I did not. With my eyes closed I saw weird patterns and shapes, felt a lot of thought slipping and a weird detachment from self; but it was a positive experience.

I was lucky enough to get in on a medical trial with a two year wait list, so the whole thing was done in hospital with blood pressure and heart moniters and a nurse sitting three feet away. Also it was free (Thank you Canada).

If anyone is considering the treatment and has questions, fire away!

I was able to get a spot in trials a hospital in my city is doing. The wait list is something like 18 months but they suddenly had an opening so I jumped on it, and it starts next week.

Any tips on what to expect?

Also, they insist that I have someone come pick me up every time. A friend has said he would, but it is a pretty big favour. Do you really need an escort home?
