CSE (AI-ML) vs Standalone AI-ML branch - syllabus and placement differences?

hey guys, filling out my option list for state counseling and had a quick doubt about the two different ai-ml tracks. some colleges have both CSE (ai-ml) and standalone AIML branches.

curriculum wise, what's the actual difference? does the standalone branch skip core cs fundamentals like operating systems or dbms just to focus on math and data models?

also, how does it affect placements and your career path?

Quick doubt — CSE (AI-ML) vs standalone AI-ML department?

Hi Seniors, i'm putting together my options list for counseling and noticed that the college offers both "computer science & engineering (ai-ml)" and just "artificial intelligence & machine learning" as a separate standalone branch.

can anyone tell me what the actual difference is on campus?

are they under the same department or do you have different labs/profs? also, do companies differentiate between the two during placements, or do both sit for the exact same tech pool?

thanks!

Any senior can help with placement stats of Bangalore CSE for 2025/2026?

Hey Seniors,

Have a rank of ~4K and I may get some higher labs of CSE in Bangalore. I have few other options such as comedk and kcet. Would like to know how the placements have been in 2026 and also the previous year for CSE alone. Like median CTC, placement percentage and how many companies visit (names of top ones). This would help me in making my decision. Thx in advance!

PS: HS Karnataka

Help needed around AI & Machine Learning, Electronics & Comm. Engg and Electrical & Electronics

Hey Seniors,

I have around 83.x% aggregate in kcet and 99 in comedk. I may not get the top CS branches in MSRIT based on the data that I have seen. AI & Machine Learning is a big stretch I guess. But still wanted to have some feedback on the AI & Machine Learning, Electronics & Comm. Engg and Electrical & Electronics branches w.r.t. the placements, grinding needed for studies. Do ECE and EEE get enough time for coding and all and keep up with the CS ppl so that they can bag decent IT offers? Any core companies visit for placements? What is considered to be a decent CGPA in ECE and EEE? Any help is appreciated. Thx!

BMSCE Seniors - Is there discrimination against CS allied branches during placements? Need honest feedback.

Hey seniors,

I’m currently calculating my options based on my expected ranks, and honestly, I’m being pretty pessimistic about my chances for Core CSE anywhere decent. If I look at BMSCE, I might at best squeeze into a CS allied branch (AIML, AIDS, Cyber, etc.) if luck works out during counselling.

Before I even think of keeping it on my preference list, I want an unfiltered reality check on how things actually work there. With the massive intake surge across the "CSE Cluster" recently, I'm highly skeptical about how companies treat allied branches.

  1. Company Discrimination: Do top-tier companies strictly restrict their hiring to CSE Core and ISE? How many companies flat-out say "Open only to Core CS" and block allied branches from sitting?
  2. The Intake Problem: With hundreds of students competing within the same cluster, how brutal is the filtering process? If someone in an allied branch has the exact same CGPA as a Core CS student, do they automatically get pushed to the back of the line?
  3. Placement Percentages: Realistically, what percentage of the batch in branches like AIML or AIDS actually gets placed on-campus? Are the statistics completely carried by Core CSE?

Just trying to get some early feedback beforehand. Thanks in advance.

COMEDK 9th May Shift 1 (9S1) - Any wrong/ambiguous answers in the Provisional Key to challenge?

Hey guys,

Just checked my response sheet and the official provisional answer key for the 9th May Shift 1 (9S1) session. Scored a 97/180 based on the key.

Are there any specific question IDs or concepts from our shift that you guys found discrepancies in?

Thanks!

Got VIT Vellore IT (Cat 3) with a 10k+ rank. Worth skipping to bet on KCET / COMEDK?

Hey guys,

Got Information Technology (IT) in Category 3 with a rank just over 10k. Honestly, I was expecting CSE Cat 3 at this rank, so I'm a bit disappointed.

VIT was supposed to be my safe backup option while I wait for my KCET and COMEDK results. But Category 3 fees are quite high, and it’s not even core CSE.

I'm seriously considering taking a risk, skipping VIT entirely, and putting all my stakes into getting a good college through KCET or COMEDK counseling.

Is it too risky to let go of a backup before results are out, or is skipping VIT Cat 3 IT the right move here? Would appreciate your opinions!

Expected KCET Agg score: 83+ %

COMEDK score : Waiting for it ...

May–July is officially the "Identity Crisis" season for us non-toppers.

If you aren't a top-ranker with a guaranteed seat, May to July is basically a fever dream of mixed options. One day I’m convinced I should take a drop, the next day I’m looking at BITSAT scores, and the hour after that I'm panic-scrolling through KCET/COMEDK counseling forums.

The worst part? The more you research, the more confused you get. Forum Post A: "This college is amazing, great placements!" and Forum Post B (10 mins later): "Do NOT go here, it's a jail and placements are fake."

Every decision feels like it’s going to ruin my life if I pick the "wrong" option.

COMEDK is officially my last stand. Provisional Key tomorrow is the moment of truth. 💀

After the KCET 50:50 weightage disaster (thanks, CBSE boards...), COMEDK is the only thing standing between me and a massive heartbreak.

It’s crazy how much depends on the provisional answer key tomorrow. I’ve already accepted that my KCET rank is going to be trash because of my board marks, so I need a 100+ score here just to stay sane.

Hope the key doesn't shatter my last bit of hope. Good luck to everyone!

KCET 2026 Help: CBSE Student but Application prepopulated as "KARNATAKA (STATE BOARD )" – Is this a problem?

Hey everyone,

I’m a CBSE student and I just checked my final KCET 2026 application printout. I’ve noticed a major discrepancy in the Academic Details section (image attached for reference).

The Problem: Even though I am from CBSE, the "State of 1st/2nd PUC / 11th/12th Board" is showing as "KARNATAKA (STATE BOARD)". In the Eligibility section, it also lists my 10th board as State Board. Does anyone else who studied in CBSE, have the same listed?

Just curious: What is the actual procedure if KEA’s OMR scanner makes a mistake?

Hi, with the results coming up, I was wondering about the "Worst Case Scenario."

If someone calculates their score based on the OMR carbon copy + Answer Key, but the actual result portal shows a lower score, what is the official way to appeal?

Does KEA even acknowledge OMR scanning errors?

Is there a specific window for result grievances like there was for the answer key?

Just wanted to know if the system is 100% foolproof or if there’s a backup plan for students.

Expected Rank for 144 KCET Marks + 85% CBSE PCM?

Hey everyone! Just trying to get a reality check on my tentative rank before the results are out.

  • KCET Score: 144/180
  • Board (CBSE): 85% in PCM
  • Category: GM

Based on previous years (2024/2025), what rank range can I expect with this score? Also, would this be enough for CSE/ISE in top colleges like MSRIT, BMSCE, or PES (RR Campus)?

Thanks in advance!

VIT Vellore counselling help: IT vs ECM vs CSE specializations at ~10.5k rank

Got ~10.5k rank in VITEEE 2026 and currently considering Vellore campus options, mainly:

  • CSE Core
  • CSE (AI/ML)
  • CSE (Data Science)
  • CSE (AI & Data Engineering)
  • IT
  • ECM (Electronics & Computer Engineering)

From what I’ve seen, CSE Core Cat 1/2 is probably unrealistic, but I’m not sure where the actual cutoffs are trending this year for the other CSE specializations and IT.

Would really appreciate input from current students/seniors on:

  1. Realistic chances for:
    • AI/ML
    • DS
    • AI & DE
    • IT at Cat 1/2/3 around this rank.
  2. How does ECM compare with CSE specializations in:
    • placements,
    • software company eligibility,
    • internship opportunities,
    • higher studies,
    • and long-term flexibility?
  3. Is ECM genuinely a good branch at VIT, or is it mostly treated like a backup branch during placements?
  4. Are CSE specializations treated differently from Core during shortlisting, or is CGPA/skills the bigger factor?
  5. If you had to prioritize among: how would you order them today considering placements + future opportunities?
    • IT
    • AI/ML
    • DS
    • AI & DE
    • ECM

Would especially appreciate honest replies from current VIT Vellore students instead of brochure-level answers 🙏
