My battle against Winston Squirrelchill

I've gotten very few tomatoes this year as Winston Squirrelchill and his wife have moved in on me. First piece of advice, pick them when they first blush, squirrels don't eat green tomatoes...... Winston Squirrelchill says hold my beer. Wrap the fruit in these bags, that'll work. Not so, says Winston. Then last night, hanging on my sprinkler rain sensor - a taunt from Winston. Well played squirrels, well played.

I had to instacart more jars!

I had just under 15lbs of cukes to pickle, so I made fridge pickles for my upcoming lake trip with the extended family. Bread and butter chips, dill spears, and 6 jars of sweet and spicy (one extra hot one for me). Plus a bonus quart of cowboy candy with my left over pound of jalapenos.

Got my Bato system set up!

Ditching the kratky home depot tubs to try and grow some dwarf paste tomatoes. Waiting on a couple more parts to correct a few leaky drip connections, but I've got my 8 plants started in rockwool today. I'll be using tomato hooks hung from 1/2" conduit I've got mounted from the ceiling. General hydroponics Flora series nutrients. Perlite for the media.

If anyone has any tips, please share!

My pepper harvest!

It's my (47m) first year gardening and I'm thrilled on how many peppers I'm getting! These will all be pickled tomorrow and not shown is 1.5lbs of jalapenos!

I've lost a bunch to sun scald followed by pests, so today I rigged up some 30% shade cloth to see if that helps.

My grow bag harvest

First time grower here - pulled my garlic, potatoes and onions from my 25 gallon bags. Super proud I got anything at all, but disappointed at the quantity and the size. Any tips? My gut feeling is that I need to fertilize more than just at planting.

June Garden Tour

Outside gardening is taking up most of my time, but I'm still plugging along with my garage garden. Six varieties of cucumbers to test which ones do best for my pickles. Johnny's Salanova Collection lettuce and a few lunchbox peppers. Some micro tomatoes in the dual iDoo countertop systems. I'm happy with the progress so far!

June Update

Peppers are producing like crazy - need to rig up some sunshade as I'm getting sun scald on the outer peppers.

Bell peppers are also doing well. I've picked a few green and red so far!

My first year growing

Today's harvest! I'm shocked at how fast shishito peppers grow, I wish my jalapenos would grow as fast, I didn't have any to pick today. Also surprised how many habanero peppers are on my single plant.

DWC Progress Report

Another week into my second round of DWC growing. I've got 8 cucumber plants that are destined for pickles, some lunch box peppers, and a few rounds of Johnny's Salanova Collection lettuce going. Started another round of basil in the kratky mason jars.

I still struggle with cucumbers. Many of the plants have damaged leaves, not sure if it's nutrients or lighting, but all new growth looks solid.

Today's Harvest

Came home from a work trip and to my delicious delight there were a few Pink Delicious and an unknown dwarf tomato ready, plus a bowl full of Sun Gold and Black Cherry ready to be picked! Tomorrow I make fresh mozzarella and we will dig in!!

A bountiful harvest!

My last post was what didn't make it, but here are some photos of what did. Got back from a work week away to a basket full of food. I'm happy with my first year's season so far.

A moment of silence for those that didn't make it

It's my first year and I'm learning a lot. Unfortunately that resulted in some losses. A brief moment of silence for my blossom end rotted tomatoes and sun scorched peppers.
