Are my hardneck garlic ready to dig up?

I planted these hardneck garlic last fall and cut the scapes maybe 2 weeks ago. It is hard to tell based on the yellowing of the plant leaves, the status of the garlic in the ground. And test bulbs I just dug up don't have that well defined swollen clove look to them. But rather they look like small smooth onions.

Should I leave the rest in the ground for another week or two to let the bulbs fill out?

Is anyone around NE Illinois that knows where to get ingredients?

I have a friend who would like to make sofrito fresh but they don’t want to go all the way to Chicago to get it. Does anyone around McHenry area know where to get culantro? I googled and found a couple outside of Chicago but I’m trying to find a reliable source close to them. Any help would be appreciated ☺️🫶🏽

Creeping cucumber uses

Does anyone use creeping cucumber for anything? I have some vines growing wild in my backyard and I was considering trying to make an aqua Fresca with it, but AI suggested it’s not worth the effort and could be a mild laxative.

Gherkin or cucumber? Or impossible to tell?

I mixed up a load of gherkins and cucumbers I had sown from seed (the labels completely faded) and I am now trying to work out whether these are gherkins or cucumbers... I planted cornichons and 'Gherking' and I think just marketmore and burpless cucumbers. Would welcome any thoughts as I am trying to decide when to pick them and whether to pickle them! Thanks in advance

What is this in my home grown arugula?

My arugula grew beautifully, I was able to eat some a few weeks ago. And then this week out of nowhere it’s full of this. What can I do???
None of the other plants (cilantro, habanero, green chili, thyme, rosemary, mint) are affected.

Audrey Hepburn's Tricolore Caprese Salad

Audrey Hepburn's Tricolore Caprese Salad from the book Audrey at Home written by her son Luca Dotti.

This was a very easy to make recipe. I love a good Caprese Salad, and this one offers an addition of sliced avocado.

  • Slice the tomatoes, avocado, fresh buffalo mozzarella
  • Sprinkle with salt & pepper
  • Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar
  • Toss on a few fresh basil leaves

and you've got yourself the dreamiest summer lunch ever!

In fact after I made this and shot a few pics, I gobbled it all up for lunch! It disappeared so fast, I hardly had time to think about it!

All I can say is this combo is classic and with the addition of avocado, it just takes it to another level. Delicious!

Growing vegetables at home

Hi everyone,
I’m thinking about growing a few vegetables at home, mainly cucumbers and tomatoes, and I was wondering if anyone here has experience with it.
I have large windows that get a lot of direct sunlight throughout the day, but I’m not sure if that’s enough for these plants or if they really need to be outside.
A few questions:
Does growing cucumbers and tomatoes indoors actually work?
How big should the pots be for each plant?
Is the sunlight from large windows usually enough?
What kind of soil do you recommend?
How do you use fertilizer? When should I start adding it, how often, and how much?
Are there any beginner mistakes I should avoid?
I’d love to hear about your experiences or any tips you wish you had known before starting.
Thanks!

Garlic 2026

Suburban Philadelphia

I can't remember the varieties. Every year I misplace the label in my shed, I'll probably find it in September.
