I just had a video on my timeline showing some people slapping a kneeling statue. I looked up what it was and it was a statue of Qin Hui and Lady Wang, two people who seemingly betrayed a revered general out of jealousy. To remind of their betrayal, these statues were cast and it’s meant to be eternal public humiliation.
I always thought eastern philosophy and ethics revolved heavily around understanding and forgiveness/harmony. I’m aware that humiliation and shame are very present in countries like South Korea, Japan and china, but how does this fit with their ideals?
