I'm a sucker for rescues....

Everyone meet Lynyrd! At Petco today we had a guy come in and angrily drop a fig bar box on the register and say he was surrendering a bird. Our manager and cashier tried to talk to him about paperwork, history, etc, but he literally only said "It's not my bird now" and he left. She was trying to figure out what to do with the bird when I walked over, picked him up, and said "I'm taking him"

I had been thinking off and on for a few months about getting a parrot of some kind, but was undecided on the type , where to get it, etc. I spent nights and many shifts listening to different videos about the different species and what their needs are, and like with all my pets, when this guy showed up I felt I was the best chance he had locally.

Couple of notes before anyone talks about the red flags in this story 😅

This cage is temporary. I'm going to build one similar to what I have for my rats on my page, but it'll be a few weeks.

If the guy took a family/friends bird and they call, I told all the other Petco employees to ask for a description of the tiel, and if it matches, I will talk to them about giving him back. I'm not saying I'd just surrender him over immediately, but I would lean that way until I was given reason not to

I have an avian vet lined up. Called them almost immediately and have an initial appointment set up for next week. I don't see any health issues besides that dry face and his beak and nails are getting a little long.

His wings are clipped, and they will stay clipped for awhile until I'm ready to trust free flying in a locked bedroom. Probably my office or back enclosed porch. Easiest to keep the other animals out.

Please share your feedback, recommendations, and stories!

Does anyone have the details for the Petco Love donations?

It's pushed soooo hard to the point of being extremely shady. And I've been told part of it is supposed to go back to location shelters? What if your store doesn't have an adoption partner?

Cloak Cosplay Ideas?

Hi

I'm putting together a Halt cosplay for a ren faire that's coming up. It's such a relatively easy outfit that will fit right in, and the fellows Rangers out there should put it together easily (even I have the angry face, beard, and sarcastic attitude!)

Does anyone have any idea how to do the mottled green and grey cloak? I have a green one, but I almost think it would have been easier to start with grey and somehow add in the green? Idk. I don't want like painted splotches of either color though.

Anny suggestions?

Jack Boots

Hi guys!

I want start doing some fantasy and medieval cosplay and costumes for events I go to. I'm going to need some old-time looking, jack-esque boots to wear. Every pair ive ever seen at an event, and the one pair I bought on Amazon has always been VERY uncomfortable, clearly being made as a costume piece and not meant for serious walking... Unfortunately I have bad feet

Do you have any suggestions for boots that would work for this? Laced, straps, whatever is fine. I'm used to wearing cowboy boots with insoles daily, but I'd still like something that isn't going to kill me throughout the day. I'm not against spending decent money (but preferably less than 400) for good boots

My handsome, under bitten boy ❤️

The last pics quality is butt but I think it's funny that he just casually eats with such a fierce predator sleeping above him. And yes, they know each other is there. They made eye contact when he came up, the cat rolled back over, and Jeffery went to his food

I think I missed a clutch of snail eggs...

I usually pull, freeze, and dump them when I find them, but it appears that I may have missed one or two... I have mystery, assassin, and rabbit snails in here.

Should I do anything? Or do I embrace the snailpocalypse? I have enjoyed not having to wipe down the glass....

I love being home during the day

This lazy bastard doesn't get up till at least 10, and he goes back down by 5. On days that I work I barely see him... It's like he doesn't even like to spend time with me. 😞

Underweight?

From the pictures on here it looks like northerns are usually less round than indos, but is Jeffery here underweight? I feed him pouch or canned cat food on top of veges once a week, as much as he wants to eat in 24 hours before I pull the dish back out, and then at least one other day a week I gave him some berries or horn worms as a snack.

What are these flies in Jeffery's terrarium

First I only saw a couple but now there's probably several dozen flying around and dying. They haven't taken over my house by any means but I saw one in the bathroom yesterday. What are they and what do I do about them without hurting Jeffery or my CUC

Skink taxes included

New Work Bench

Hi! I'm just starting out on my woodworking journey. I have SOME background in it thanks to my dad and grandpa, but not much. I've been following some people on YouTube (Rezx, Eion, that old guy with the shaggy hair that's probably forgotten more than I'll ever know) and have decided to take up the hobby with the mid-term goal of replacing all my bedroom furniture with stuff I've built. Plans to use a mix of power and hand tools (my shoulder has already informed me he doesn't like ripping boards).

I started off with this bench here, modified for Rex Kruegers Minimal Timber Bench. I still need to finish flattening the top and add dog holes, but I'm very happy with how it turned out. And if anyone's wondering.... Yes that tool well fills up with sawdust and I'm already planning to change it haha

I Got a New Roommate...

Everyone, meet Jeffery!

He's a northern and between 2-3 years old, probably about 17 inches long. A friend of mine took him in temporarily when his originally family couldn't take care of him, and after making sure he was healthy and social, she started asking around for a new home. She hadn't named him and when he came up in conversation, I eventually started calling him Jeffery

And then I realized since I named him, I better take him.

I built his terrarium to fit (mostly) on my entertainment stand. 60" by 22" by 24". Allegedly the stand can hold up to 500 pounds .. but the back feet are all on a separate braced 2x4 shelf I connected to the wall, just in case. He has 5 1/2 inches of soil, sand, and coconut to burrow through, and a hollow cork log I probably spent too much money on.

I've only had him a few days and he's already super friendly and spends at least half the time wandering around up top or even coming to the glass to see what's going on.

My only concern is heat. I have a 150W on him (plus the UVB), and it stays around 98-100 on the basking side. I like my house colder though, and I hate to put my AC against his light during the day. Any thoughts on how to keep him warm without roasting the rest of the room?

If anyone has thoughts, concerns, or suggestions for me, let me know!

Building a Habitat for My New Skink

I'm about to take in a male BTS from a friend. It's a couple years old and about 16" long. I don't currently have a place for it but I want to put it on my entertainment center, making it the center piece of the living room. That sort of limits my options on size, so I want to build the habitat myself.

The biggest I could make it without modifying anything else would by 60 by 15 inches. I love the length, but is that wide enough? Also, how tall should it be? If 18" is okay, then I don't have to move my TV up the wall. I plan for 4" of substrate in the front, with it sloped up so there 5-6 in the back... You know , till he redecorates.

Also, do you guys suggest sliding glass doors or hinge doors? I'll have a removable screen on the top as well.

Thoughts? Recommendations? Light suggestions?

Senior/Weight Management Dog Food Suggestion

I have 3 large dogs: a border Collie mix (14ish), a lab/weim (12i), and a bull dog mix (8). The border collie has a sensitivity or allergy to chicken. Before we go down that rabbit hole, know I've tried different foods for years and any time I switch to one with poultry as a main ingredient, she sheds more and her skin dries out. The bull dog also has mild skin issues in general, but nothing my last two vets have been concerned about. Those two also are getting more difficult to exercise as they get older, and weight management is always on my mind for them. I don't free feed.

The lab/weim is basically part goat, part horse, and will probably outlive me while trying to pull me down the street no matter what she eats.

I'm looking for food that's good for senior pets and/or weight management, preferably that's salmon based as that seems to be the best for best for coats and skin of the two sensitive ones. Currently they're on Pro Plan Senior Sensitive Skin and Stomach Salmon and that's been great for them, but at $80 for 24 pounds it's not exactly the best for me...

I'm not against supplementing other food with glucosamine or fish oil if it means getting the same benefits for less money, though I would love your joint supplement recommendations if you're suggesting that route.

Thank you!

Tank Progress

Specs:

55 Gallon with sicce shark pro, mostly live plants, a collection of corys, gouramis, neon tetras, danios, snails, a single ram cichlid (I know, but she was a rescue), and a dwarf pleco named Waldo

10 gal: aqueon kit with fake plants, a betta (currently not doing so good 😢), a couple snails

Stand: you guys hate this thing BUT I've not had any issues with wobbling or bending. I have it bracketed to my wall studds. I practically dropped a bucket on it last week and it didn't even budge
