I’m a little upset that they removed the Black Templar power pack that has the skull hanging at the back and they made it separate, it made my tactical so perfect but oh well at least I managed to unlock that cool iron halo in its place
That was ALOT OF WORK! Now that that’s over with I can finally go back to terrorizing everyone in PVP 😭 level 50 here I come
This will be the last of the character analyzation and breakdowns from the Dark Krakens comic until more characters are introduced. Ending with these two cool dudes Koia and Arashi.
The idea of these 2 marines came from my little sister. In the script for the scene, originally when Akkorro walks into the hallway on page 13, initial I just had him being greeted by two random, no named, armored Dark Krakens. But as time went on, and I was designing the scene I changed my mind and wanted everything to seem more meaningful. So I asked my sister I come up with two characters and add to the story. I gave her the the overview of the chapter cultural, references, this that and the third and she came up with some cool ideas.
She based Koia’s appearance(The marine with the curly fro) on Papuan and Fijian culture. His face tattoos are traditional Papuan markings from a few tribes. Naktis is filled with many creatures not just fish and reptiles, but also many insects like coral scorpions. The tattoo that covers his body is a dangerous, poisonous, giant centipede species that lives on the island he hails from. Koia, is light hearted and all smiles, he’s one of the few marines that can match Jacarae’s energy, but similar to him, there’s 2 sides to a coin and he’s still very much a space marine.
Arashi, the marine with the scars and stitches on his face, is the medic/helix adept of the Lurkers. He has been trained by the apothecarian but is still not a full one, as he still has much value as a field combatant. He’s serious and no nonsense for the most part, always watching and observing everything and everyone around him. On his armor, he has his personal heraldry, which is a Kraken with wings, he has similar markings tattooed on his body. Koia and Arashi are never seen too far apart they have a very close relationship as if they were biological brothers.
like Whiro, they are in a few pages in the background or eavesdropping on Akkorro and Jacaraes conversation. But they are big players in the comic and will show up again. They served by Akkorro for a long time, originally part of a kill team that later became full squad and now demi company, dubbed the “Lurkers”.

Continuing the breakdown and analyzation of characters from the Dark Krakens comic, next up is the OG himself, Whiro(Fee-Row)
Whiro has only shown up at the beginning of the comic on pages 6-10 but I can promise you he is pivotal to the story ahead. Though he’s really not that old, many members of the 3rd Company view him in a Unc type status lol as he was one of the original members of the Dark Krakens
When I learned about Primaris Marines I was lowkey obsessed with their origin and what it would feel like to be a soldier out of time. Somebody that lived 10,000 years ago, now waking up in the future, having to fight in this forever war. To then later have to settle on a strange, unknown world and call it home. How would that person mentally handle all of that? What would that person be like? How would they cope? And that was the birth of Nemkov.
He was given that name as soon as he came out of cryo sleep and carried it along with him during his Greyshield days until he arrived on Naktis, and the people gave him a new one, Whiro. Whiro is the name of a god from Māori mythology. Why the people of Naktis called him that is hilarious but I’m unsure if I’ll add that to the comic but we’ll see.
Whiros physical appearance is based off a few different things, but mainly of Clone Troopers. Clones from Stars Wars have always been portrayed by Māori actors, like Bodie Taylor and Temuera Morrison. So I thought it would be a perfect fit for his slave soldier aesthetic. The Tattoos on his face are tribal markings he allowed the people of Naktis to do on him as a means of assimilation, the tentacles completely over his body and lead to the center of his back where a variant of the Chapter is. I’m super excited to bring him back into the story as him and Akkorro have such an interesting dynamic, Akkorro once served in Whiros squad before becoming a sergeant of his own squad and now being a rank ahead of him, they have a long history.

Once again I’m on an Art hiatus but I wanted to show some early designs and break down some of the characters from my Dark Krakens Comic, this time it’s a fan favorite, Jacarae.
Jacarae was the first Dark Krakens character I ever thought of and created. He’s low-key my pride and joy. But as all good writers know, you can never fall in love with your own characters. So don’t be surprised if Jacarae is randomly eaten by some Tyranids 😂
So similarly to Akkorro, Jacaraes design came to me after learning the Dark Krakens lore. I grew up around a lot of indigenous people, so I automatically had a design idea for him, but I also wanted to add and have multiple oceanic characteristics to him as well, with one being Māori. So I spent several days studying Māori faces. Within that research I found out so much more then i thought I knew about the culture, the markings(Moko), distinct differences, their deeper meanings, etc. And gave me so much more respect and insight for the culture and specifically Māori women. I know that women unfortunately can’t be space marines. But I wanted to add them in some way to his character, so I decided to add the traditional female marking(Moko Kauae) to his chin and a part of the traditional male marking (Tā Moko) on his forehead. His Moko Kauae is significant to his character, so I can’t speak on it too much, you’ll just have to read the rest of the story.
Some other oceanic, cultural things I added to him was Japanese, his name, Kurai. Means Dark/Gloomy. On his armor, the right knee pad is the Japanese kanji for 3, for the 3rd Company. He has several other tattoos and markings on his body and hidden on his armor from other cultures as well. He wears artificer Gravis armor that has a lot of tricks up its sleeve, with a customized heavy bolt rifle(Eel’s Kiss) that is also a harpoon.
Jacarae might be all smiles most of the time, but he’s still a space marine, and that switch can flip instantly. On Naktis, everything ether wants to kill you or use you. Ever since he was a child he grew up around Leviathan size creatures and other terrifying of lovecraftian beings. So he knows what true horrors are and doesn’t fear much in the grimdark. So why give in to the inevitable dread? Why not smile and laugh right into the abyss.

I’m still on a Art hiatus but I wanted to show some early designs and break down some of the characters from my Dark Krakens Comic starting with Akkorro.
The idea of Akkorro initially came from simply learning the lore of the Dark Krakens, how their world is filled with many islands and archipelagos, with a heavy influence of Asiatic cultures and island based countries. It just happens that around the time, I was reading Golden Kamui, and watching Chief of War. Two stories that take place around cultures mentioned in Dark Krakens lore. The two protagonist of those series “Saichi Sugimoto” and “Ka’iana(Jason Momoa)” kind of both birthed the concept of Akkorros appearance. Blending both cultures of Hawai’i and Japan.
The tattoos that are coming from his lip down to his chin, are taken from one of my favorite Star Wars characters “Asajj Ventress” I wanted him to have some type of visible tribal tattoo, but something that wouldn’t take away from his appearance. I’ve gotten many comments on how he ”Doesn’t” look like a space marine and how attractive he looks. For one, there’s no clear cut definition of what one looks like. They are human just like us, some look good and some don’t. Akkorro is young with only 1 facial scar, because he keeps his helmet on lol.
I can’t speak on his personality without spoiling the story so that’s just something you guys have to wait on. More pages of the comic will be coming soon but for now here’s

I'm always doing research for my work/projects and stumbled upon these cool designs. Which some of them Ive seen before and already plan to add to a few of my characters, but I wanted to share this.
I know the Dark Krakens take elements from a multitude of different cultures not just Polynesian, these include cultures from the Indian Ocean, Caribbean islands, Baltic sea, of course the Pacific Ocean and more. So hope thesem designs inspire you to kitbash some cool weapons.
3 editions 3 changes 😂😂😂
When the Dark Krakens became a Chapter in 9th edition they were shown with bright white lenses. They also had these same lenses in the Warzone: Octarius books as well.
In the 10th edition codex they were then seen with purple-ish lenses instead of white. This was then backed up when they were put in the SM2 video game with purple lenses. Focus who made the game, has stated they don’t add anything in the game with out GWs ok.
And now in 11th edition, the lenses are now yellow/gold. This is actually not the first time we’ve seen them with this color, as in the 10th book where they also had purple lenses. Their parade army display all had yellow lenses.
And this had me thinking, I have never seen a Space Marine chapter, whose helmet did not change color, but the lenses kept changing color so often. Now I think there’s a method behind the madness, I think those color lenses actually signify the different Companies. Let me explain.
If you don’t know the Dark Krakens in terms of appearance are not codex compliant, they use a multitude of different markings and bioluminescent colors to signify rank, achievements, special purposes, etc. The Lore even states that there are hundreds/countless of different markings that they use. But specifically when it comes to Companies, the only things we know is that the 5th Company Captain wears the “Beak of the Kraken” Symbol and the 10th Company likes to wear “Hydraserpens” snake symbols.
So here’s where the lens and Company connection comes in, and it actually comes in because of this new 11th edition lore. The display that shows the Dark Kraken with the yellow/gold lens is specifically stated to be from the 2nd Company. And in the Codex what color does the second company wear? Yellow/gold. And during the Dark Krakens introduction where during Octavia war, they were joined by the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 8th and 10th Companies. I can only assume that the display that they used showed a marine from the 1st Company in which codex colors that would be white. or possibly even the 8th. And with the purple lenses that would be 7th Company.
This is just a theory, but like I said, it’s very strange that they keep changing the lenses so much. No other chapters lenses change that much that quickly. We are a Chapter that actively uses 2 different Chapter symbols so maybe we’re just special.
It was really cool writing a quick short story for this artwork, checkout some of the community's for more awesomeness r/blackdragons40k, r/CovenantofFire40k, r/stormgaints40k

I still need to get all the weapons that I want in purple, along with the iron halo that I really want
I’m slowing down on making art at the moment to rest, I’m constantly still creating new sketches and ideas though, like one of the character that Will be coming in the future of the comic, has an amazing armor. His name is Dark Kraken Sergeant, Shima. Along with Veteran Sergeant Nemkov’s armor. More pages will come down the line everythings a work in progress
If you have no idea who these guys are https://www.reddit.com/r/DarkKrakens/s/fV5jyFnwwx
wanted to give a special thank you to all of our members, especially the OG’s. The ones that have been painting, drawing, talking and reading about the Dark Krakens ever since the inception. The ones that have been filling the webs with their models, artworks, kitbashes, lore and theories. It is because of all of you that after all these years, we are finally getting some New love and attention in lore.
They could’ve picked any other chapters especially, Ultima Founding. GW has tried push certain Chapters on to the fandom, like the Tomekeepers and Silver Templars. But our popularity grew organically. It’s because y’all members dedication and passion that has gotten us here, so thank you.
Special shout outs to these individuals: u/FilibustStuartlittle for creating the most iconic Dark Kraken models and the standard of painting - Enzo Katsuragi and Tuan Ang Nguyen for arguably creating the first Dark Kraken artworks ever - u/nerdboy_sam for your unwavering dedication and passion from day 1 - u/that_dumb_warlock for creating the sub - All of our approved users yall know who you are! - and everyone else who have been creating Krakens forever. I’m so lost for words right now, it’s been 4 years since the Krakens got any new lore, I thought it would not happen soon and we would have to wait even longer. So I’ve been creating Dark Kraken art for the past year and change. I love this chapter man. I’m so happy!!!! Inexorable as the Tide Brothers and sisters! Someone get me some tissue😢😢😭
