My Appreciation for Thomas Newman

This is going to sound funny but I first fell in love with scoring as a kid, when I first watched Finding Nemo. At that time, I used to wonder why I felt so emotional when watching the movie (other than the plot). But while growing up, I began realizing that the purpose of these scores is to use motifs and intense orchestration to make the viewer feel something almost tangible.

I started hyper-fixating on scores while watching movies and even now, I still feel maybe even more intensely for Finding Nemo (which might sound silly, I know).

I fell in love with more composers, like John Williams, Hans Zimmer (I got to see this dude perform live, it was crazy), Howard Shore, James Newton Howard, etc. But it wasn’t until I watched American Beauty that I decided Thomas Newman was my favorite composer ever. Obviously, I know a lot of people would disagree with me, saying he’s never even won an Oscar or that composers like Williams and Zimmer are far better. But, subjectively, with Newman, I feel such intense frisson with every movie, so much so that I began noticing his style of music without looking at the credit details.

What bothers me about Newman is how many people don’t know him or forget about him (which is crazy considering his family’s prominence in film scoring).

But all the movies he composed for, Meet Joe Black, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Road to Perdition, Scent of a Woman, etc, have made me feel almost insane while watching them. It’s like my soul reverberates against my body, causing shivers to shoot up and down my spine (I tend to get poetic when speaking about Newman). I literally start tearing up from the score, even if there isn’t anything sad happening, I’ll cry and uncontrollably smile.

Anyway, I just really needed to rant about my love for Thomas Newman. My passion for film scores has insufferably become my entire personality and, funny enough, nobody in my life understands and it drives me NUTS.

Casey Affleck in Oppenheimer

can we take a moment to discuss how incredible casey’s performance as colonel pash was in oppenheimer? there are many things i loved about this movie but casey’s 2 min cameo was one of, if not the best scene for me.

i remember how i actually felt fear, as if his quiet semblance was going to be followed by a sudden shot to the head.

not to mention, his score? was the cherry on top for pash’s goal of not only intimidating robert, but also the viewers, especially when they would shoot his frame staring into the camera, seemingly breaking the fourth wall.

EDIT:

let me clarify that i had no idea casey has a terrible reputation for sexually harassment. i live under a rock in regards to pop culture. however, this post is meant to be a compliment to boris pash’s character in the movie. sorta like loving the art whilst hating the artist. apologies for my ignorance.

EE186 Professor BEWARE

For any electrical engineering students, I’m here to be your savior in life by telling you to never take Christopher Hirunthanakorn for EE186.

When I tell you I have never taken such a terrible and unprofessional teacher in my life. For context, this is my first semester at CSULB and I’ve never taken a programming class EVER. I’m good at math and circuits, but programming is the bane of my existence. I hate everything about it, i dont know anything about
it, and I think it is utterly boring (my opinion, coders dont hate me pls). This is also his first semester teaching at csulb.

Anyway, I came into this class thinking “okay, introductory, he’ll explain, lecture slides, videos, etc etc” I have never been so wrong. First off, he taught this class with no lecture slides, no preparation, and canvas wasn’t set up until 2 weeks into class. He taught through the whiteboard from his memory :). Second, he was teaching the class and assigning assignments and labs as if we already knew stuff about programming prior to the class. He assumed we knew how to code what and where. His labs were where we submitted coding assignments and the descriptions were so confusing. He didn’t even have a format for how we submit each lab.

This wasn’t the worst part though. We missed A MONTH AND A HALF of class because of him. This class was every friday from 8am-12:30pm. That’s ONCE A WEEK. He cancelled class on the third week of school bc he got sick and then the following week he didnt even show up. No notice, no email, no announcement. We were all waiting outside class for HALF AN HOUR before deciding to call it and leave. it wasn’t until 10am that he sent an email apologizing bc he had an emergency (I commute to this school so the waste of gas was highly appreciated). and then the week after, he was 30-40 mins late because he left his lab keys at home, but at least he sent an announcement this time. there was also the week after where he cancelled class 30 mins before it’s starting time (i had just parked in the structure ready to walk there).

There was one single homework assignment and no quizzes, even though his syllabus takes both into consideration for the grade percent (i believe 10% or 15%). Also, he allows one side of an 8x11 paper as a cheat sheet for each midterm (that’s literally the only good thing and it’s not even worth it). it gets worse though, dont worry. Even until now, before our final grades are due tomorrow, not a single assignment has been graded. He only graded our two midterms and that’s it. i have absolutely no idea what my grade in this class is even now. i don’t even know my final exam grade. i don’t know anything.

i walked into this class and left it not having learned a single fkn thing. i can confidently say, even now at the end of the semester, i don’t know anything about coding or about how to code except printf :)

i already hated programming before, but now? i would actually rather shove my face through a heating grate and survive than take this class or anything related to programming again.

please save yourselves and take literally ANYBODY else. DO NOT TAKE CHRISTOPHER HIRUNTHANAKORN.

Out of the r34, mk4, or s15, which would you say is the best performance-wise?

I’ve been wanting one of these cars for the longest time and I’ve been saving up in the hopes of finally importing one of them or even finding a seller in the states. I want an outside opinion though on which out of the three of them is most worth the purchase. Rarity means a lot to me but I, obviously, more-so value its performance and lifespan. What do yall think?

Edit: for more specifics on the models of each car, i’d be considering the gtr, rz, and spec-r.
