Is Painting with Noise Useful?

Is Painting with Noise Useful?

I've been messing around with noise (Perlin, Worley and Flow) generation in my pixel editor and it was just limited to creating flood fill effects such as flames, smoke etc (combined with colour ramps and selections). However, I've added a new Field paint mode that lets the user paint with noise in various ways - this image shows pixel displacement within a filled circle, we also have shade and noise texture stencils - is this overkill for the average pixeler or is it a useful feature to develop more?

How I Draw 2D Textures in 3D!

For the past couple of weeks I have been working on the 2D brush management and texture fill system within my own Pixel and Tilemap Editor. In the video I show how we can create and mange custom brushes, in addition to rotation and scaling in 3D space - this brush is then plugged into the core Texture Fill System to produce psuedo-3D perspective fills across normal and orthogonal plains!

Any feedback welcome!

Developing a Pixel Editor - is it worth while?

Hey all,

A bit of background: having worked in tech for almost 10 years (AWS DevOps) I found myself unemployed and at a loose end so decided to teach myself C++ and code an app I've wanted to create for the past 30+ years - a homage to DPaint 3 which I used constantly back in my foundational Amiga days and loved every second of it (nostalgia eh!).

So for the past 12 months I've created a C++ 2D engine with a simple OpenGL batch renderer backend and for the last 4 months I have been developing the actual Pixel Editor on top of the engine. The only external libraries used are GLAD and GLFW - so this is a total in at the deep end with both hands tied scenario!

tldr; the pixel editor is in quite an advanced stage with zoom, draw tools, paint modes etc all in a good working state. I wanted to ask what you good honest redditors thought of my progress and if there was a potential market for an inexpensive (sub $20) indie release (itch.io) of a dedicated indexed palette pixel editor as funds are tight and I would love to make solo indie dev my full time career?

Anyway. I'm rambling ... please let me know what you think - all feedback greatly appreciated.

There's some videos on my youtube channel but i'm far from being a content creator!

How I Developed A Powerful Dithering System for Amazing Pixel Art

Development of my custom Pixel Art Editor (homage to DPaint 3) continues, with all core drawing tools now fully working. In this video, I show Pencil, Spray Can, Flood Fill, Lines, Bezier Curves, and Filled/Unfilled Shape drawing using any number of built in pre-set brushes in addition to a simple yet power brush dither function. Any feedback welcome!

Finally have Drawing and Shading working in My Pixel Art Editor

After a hectic couple of weeks, I have hit the milestone of finally having pixels being plotted in my C++ Pixel Art Editor! This video shows basic paint mode using the built in brushes, with colour masks being used to lock and target specific canvas pixel ranges. In addition, we also have index and RGB shading working - with all shaded colours remapped to palette best-fit! Hope you like the progress!

Brush Previews and Image Panning in My Pixel Art Editor

Development continues on my c++ pixel art editor, resulting in brush previews and automatic pixel grids alongside easy image panning. This is the final step before moving into actual pixel plotting and turning the UI into a real working art package...

Advanced Palette Editting in My Pixel Art Editor

Just a little update on my pixel art editor - now we have some advanced palette modification tools baked in, including selection movement and visibility toggles - take a look and let me know what you think (and a sub would be great as I think I'm posting to myself!)

Palette Drag & Drop in My Pixel Art Editor

Ongoing development of my indexed Pixel Art Editor using my custom C++ GUI engine. This video shows palette editing and manipulation including dragging cells to rearrange the palette and copying colours between indices - all with realtmne canvas colour updates!

UI / UX Demo in My Pixel Art Editor

Just a quick post with a link to a video on my youtube channel highlighting the new and improved UI within my custom C++ pixel art editor - any feedback welcome as development continues ... what this space!

Oh be gentle - this is my first c++ project.

Custom GUI Engine Pixel Editor - Update

Well its been a few weeks since I gave an update (as if anyone is waiting with bated breath on my every word lol!) but the development of my pixel art editor continues ... the major news is that my GUI render backend has been completely ripped out and simplified and now it does indeed at like the good little differed batch renderer it is supposed to be - rock solid 60fps with zero slow downs - nice!

As for the GUI / Editor - have almost finished the layer editor tool - we have new layer and/or frame creation, linked frames, and drag and drop in and out of layer groups - all renamable via a click on the label. Also added splitter panes that allow the canvas/layer to be dynamically resized using the horizontal grey bar. Oh - that cyan rectangle above the frame header buttons can be dragged to allow quick movement left and right through the animation cells!

Just going to finish off the layer editor and then start on pushing pixels to the layers via the draw tools.

Pixel Editor UI

Just a quick update on the ongoing development of my new Pixel Art Editor that is using my custom c++ GUI framework.

The screenshot shows 2 visible and scrollable layers (one RGB reference image and one smaller indexed palette image) with the indexed palette in mid edit!

I'm currently working on the layer and timeline system and have a full scrollable layer list panel with draggable layers and groups - all with editable names.

Any feedback or questions appreciated.

Custom GUI UX FeedBack?

Hey all - i'm currently designing a Pixel Editor using my custom C++ GUI Egine and just wnted to show my work to date and ask for any feedback on the look and feel of the general UI.

The screenshot shows the palette editor gradient tab creating a red->cyan gradient between indices 0 to 16, and the colour ramp editor panel.

Any comments welcome...
