Looking for feedback on the free demo for my solo-developed psychological horror game

I've been working on a psychological horror game called Ashes of the Damned: The Forgotten Ward, and I've just released the free demo on itch.io.

I'm looking for honest feedback from horror fans. I'm especially interested in hearing your thoughts on:

  • The atmosphere
  • The puzzles
  • The pacing
  • Performance
  • Anything that felt confusing, frustrating, or could be improved

If you have the time to play it, I'd really appreciate any feedback, whether it's positive or negative. It all helps make the game better.

Major Demo Update is Live! (Expanded Loop, Objective HUD, Performance Tweaks & QoL Fixes)

Hey everyone!

I’ve just pushed a major update to the Ashes of the Damned: The Forgotten Ward demo on Steam!

This isn't just a small patch. I've restructured the gameplay loop, optimized performance, and cleaned up the UI based on player feedback.

Here’s what’s updated in the new build:

  • Faster Game Start: Streamlined the intro sequence so you get directly into the gameplay much faster.
  • Expanded Gameplay Loop: The demo no longer ends abruptly—you must now locate all 4 key items (Glasses, Locket, Patient File 1, and Patient File 2) to complete the escape run.
  • Readable Lore Rework: Significantly reduced and formatted the walls of text on lore documents so they are much faster and cleaner to read.
  • New Objective HUD: Press TAB anytime to view your current active objectives and tutorial info on the fly.
  • Room Narration: Added protagonist voice/narration triggers to key areas throughout the asylum.
  • Performance Optimizations: Major under-the-hood graphics and rendering tweaks for significantly smoother, higher frame rates across all setups.
  • Menu & Navigation Fixes: Pressing ESC now properly manages inventory, map, and settings screens into the pause menu without accidentally unpausing the game.

The demo now cleanly returns you to the main menu upon completion so you know you've cleared it.

🖤 Wishlist on Steam!

If you haven't yet, adding the game to your Steam Wishlist is the single biggest way to support the project and help with visibility: 👉 Wishlist on Steam:https://store.steampowered.com/app/3843760/Ashes_of_the_Damned_The_Forgotten_Ward/

I recently overhauled my Steam page. Does it clearly explain the game, or is anything confusing?

Hi everyone,

I’m a solo developer working on Until the Fire Dies, a first-person survival horror game where you prepare during the day and keep your campfire alive through the night.

I recently overhauled the Steam page with new screenshots and gameplay GIFs, and I would really appreciate some honest feedback.

In particular:

  • Does the main gameplay loop make sense from the page?
  • Which screenshot or GIF catches your attention first?
  • Is there anything that looks unclear, weak, or repetitive?
  • Would the page make you interested enough to try the demo?

Please be honest. I would rather fix problems now than discover them when the demo launches.
