Relief Bartender (S4 E23)

Fantastic episode.

Great jokes. Character development. Fantastic premise with payoff.

Cheers to Miriam Trogdon who wrote this episode and no others!

Allston Memories: The Bus Stop & Breakfast Club

Two institutions. RIP

The “new” Western Ave with tall buildings and non-divey establishments still disorients me. But lurking behind the gentrification lie the bones and echos of late nights of drinking and late mornings being hungover.

Bar Help

Just watching S4 E19 - Dark Imaginings.
Sammy is going “skiing” right after tearing up his body in an ego fueled racquetball match with Woody. (Woody was going to play with Bonnie, Sam’s latest young chippy. Diane chastised the age gap making Sammy self conscious.)

As Sam heads out with skis, he says to Woody, “if you need help behind the bar, call Bob.”

So… who the heck is Bob?

Was he ever in an episode?

Edit: typo

Where is everybody?

Sunday night baseball. Red Sox / Dodgers stories to follow. Why are the seats so empty? Is it the late day sun keeping them away? Complacency?

Which episodes felt like the series MIGHT be “jumping the shark”?

I maintain that Cheers started to veer into crossing the rubicon a few times post season 7 but managed to pull back and retain its heart and quality through the loyalty we had to the characters and the strong joke writing even when episode premises were — let’s say — a bit stupid.

SAM AHOY (S8 E6) was one of those episodes for me. Sam needs money to buy the bar back. Robin Colcord just so happens to have to attend to an emergency and cannot sail his multimillion dollar boat in an America’s Cup like regatta so he asks Sam to captain the ship.

There’s no other crew available for whatever reason even though it made no sense that Robin would trust this vessel without anyone to help. Anyways, so it’s just Carla and Norm, the former Coast Guard guy, along with Sam.

That alone was ridiculous but led to some great one liners between Carla and Rebecca (the boat is called The Rebecca and takes three men to get her out of her slip…)

Long story short, Norm discovers a ticking time bomb in the fridge, since Robin is in constant danger due to his work. Instead of throwing it overboard, they hightail it to shore where the boat explodes into pieces just as they get to safety.

Oh and Norm sees sharks swimming around the boat, which is why they didn’t jump overboard.

It’s not the first episode of the series to lean into the most absurd sitcom tropes but I don’t know of many other episodes that are built on such a stupid premise.

Yet, I laughed throughout. Great joke writing if not much else. Rhea and George and Sam seemed uncomfortable during the drama on the boat — but still made me laugh.

The episodes/seasons that followed held without crossing the rubicon into post shark jump.

Which episodes of Cheers stick out to you for doing the same?

Playlist tracing the arc of Sara

Hey friends,

I’ve been a deep cut fan since I was thirteen (for reference, I’m a mid 70s baby). And I’ve realized that I came of age on Bob through compilations — first Biograph Box Set, then the Greatest Hits Vol 2, then Bootlegs Vol 1-3.

Not a bad way to explore Bob but I lost the narrative thread, bouncing around like that through his catalog.

In regards to his relationship with Sara Lownds, would any generous soul suggest a playlist of Sara-inspired songs tracing the arc of their relationship? Which songs mark the start, which one might be the last he wrote referencing their relationship?

Album-wise, would Blonde on Blonde mark the start and Desire the end (“Sad Eyed Lady” to “Sara”) of his songs about Sara? “Idiot Wind” the nadir of dissolution, Sara the last gasp effort to salvage?

I’m wondering if I’m overlooking some cuts from other albums (before BonB and after Desire) which are about Sara.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Intentional Awkward Syntax or Accidental (but perfect)

Did Bob Dylan ever discuss why he sang “where I lucky was to be employed” instead of “where I was lucky to be employed” in Tangled Up in Blue?

Both could work in terms of syllable count — which suggests to me that it was accidental awkward syntax delivered in the passion of the moment in the song. On the other hand, that the “mistake” in syntax happens to sound perfect and rolls off the tongue a bit smoother tells me that it’s no mistake at all.

I’m not the grammar police but I usually hear bad syntax when I hear it, and today is the first time I ever really thought about it.

Which reminds me of something that’s a frequent theme of posts on this sub: I feel grateful to share this passion for this singular artist. In fact, you could say, “I lucky was to be alive during Bob’s career.”

Will it be worth it?

So this year has been a slog. Insufferable at times. Flickers of excitement and potential here and there.

The young kids have had scant veteran leadership to teach them to navigate this adversity (aside from the blessings of Contreras and the few years in perspectives of young’uns themselves like Crochet, Ceddane, and — gulp — Duran).

If the young players were kids in a family, we’d applaud the life lessons they’re getting, to toughen them up for the time when they need to lead and do it on their own.

So … will it be worth it? Will the young kids reap the rewards of the challenge of this year and be stronger as a unit next year?

I don’t want to give Breslow credit for giving them this sink-or-swim, rudderless year. But I wonder if it will pay off.

(Despite being a Red Sox fan for 45+ years and a purveyor of this sub for 1 year, I somehow still hold onto a shred of optimism.)

Expired groceries at Target

Am I the only one that looks through the pre packaged deli items at target extra close because of oversights like this?

Maybe it’s just our H2OTown target but … does anyone check expiration dates? This is a perrenial problem.

(Note, this sell but date was over 1 month ago and the package was right behind two other packages that expire on 6/24, tomorrow.)

Bill Lee Pickle Juice

I wonder if the Sox broadcast was on a longer delay than normal with Bill in the booth last inning. Did Bill take a shot (“pickle juice”) during the inning?!

Funny guy, but Will Fleming seemed to be riding cautious side saddle, hoping something forbidden wouldn’t come out of the Spaceman’s mouth.

Not sure Will or Lenny noticed Bill’s retort to Will telling Bill that he “might need some more pickle juice.”

Missing zero beats, Bill replied: “that’s what my ex wife used to say.”

Tolle is awesome

Not only do I love his performance and swagger — but I absolutely love seeing him out on the handshake line greeting every Sox player with a high five. And a hug for Chappy.

I saw a smart post today remarking that Fred Dryer was cast as Sam Malone, Sam would have been much less likable. I agree — though Ted embodied Sam so well, and Ted is such a remarkably good television actor, that it’s hard to imagine anyone be more likable than Ted’s Sam.

But … what if Ted had the titular role of Sergeant Rick Hunter on television’s Hunter?

While I have great respect for Ted and his ability to shape shift into any television role, I’m not sure the Dirty Harry archetype is one he could have pulled off. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that Fred was the right pick. As was Ted as Sam.

Thoughts?

(Addendum, are there any tv dramas from the 80s that Ted could have pulled off? I think Magnum PI is an easy one to imagine him doing well. Knight Rider’s Hasselhoff is another one. Greatest American Hero? Mmmm, I think that might be a stretch but comedically, I have faith in Ted.)
