Hi folks! Garrett Leahy from the SF Standard here. I wrote this piece after a scooter rider had her wheel fall into the rail tracks on Market Street in SF and died. But cyclists have been falling in these tracks since at least the 1890s. At least one has been killed.

I looked into "flangeway fillers" — rubber inserts some European cities use to fill the gap in a rail that holds a train's wheel — turns out they're expensive and the material isn't durable enough for a high-volume system like Muni anyway. I had hoped the article would offer an easy solution to prevent these crashes, but it turns out there's nothing simple about it.
