Should immigrants to the United States be expected to integrate?

There’s a million reasons someone might choose to move to the United States. Some love the culture, some simply want more money. However, I believe there is a wide expectation for us immigrants to ‘integrate’. By integration, I mean falling in line with American beliefs and values.

Personally, I do not believe that someone should be expected to change their beliefs simply because they are not compatible with what the government has mandated. What do you think?

Outside of firearms, what is the best lethal self defense tool a person carry?

I am looking for ideas on what I may be able to use in a situation in which I cannot retreat or protect myself sufficiently with something such as pepper spray. I have a fixed blade knife I carry, but many people consider those to be a bad option. I am not legally eligible to carry a firearm, so I need something else. Ideas?

Can socialism appeal to a person like me?

I am an immigrant living in the United States. I’ve been here for over a decade and gotten to know how things work pretty well. I also have gotten to know a bit about the political system. I struggle financially, and hold those wealthier and more successful than me in a lot of contempt since I know they are partly responsible for my hardships. With that said, I can understand how socialism could benefit me immensely.

However, I cannot bridge that knowledge with the reality that I hate Americans. I do not want the rest of this country to prosper. I want something that will benefit me, but I do not particularly want others to benefit alongside me. I do not want to be part of the same “community” as the people around me, nor do I want to work with them or assist them beyond what would personally benefit me. I do not value humanity or platonic relationships at all, in general. This leaves me a little unsure of where I stand in regards to this ideology. I can benefit from it, but I do not want to do any work just for the benefit of others. Hopefully this makes sense!

What would happen to a juror if they spoke publicly about an ongoing case?

Say John is part of the jury for a very high profile criminal case (if that matters). The case is still ongoing, but John decides to make an appearance on a talk show or podcast and offers them a tell-all style interview about the proceedings and the evidence.

What would happen to John? How would this affect the trial in question?

Is it assault, battery, or otherwise unlawful to run towards someone in your jurisdiction?

The scene:

A man establishes eye contact with a stranger, and upon doing so begins sprinting towards that person at full speed. They abruptly stop right before reaching the person, let’s say a foot away from them, and never make any physical contact, nor do they verbalize anything. Would this be unlawful?

Any recommendations for a plastic surgeon in Peoria or nearby?

Looking to get a male breast reduction because my back is hurting. The cheaper the better since it’ll be out of pocket.

Thanks!

Is any therapy better than no therapy?

As far as I understand, there are people with specialized therapeutic needs, for instance those with strong homicidal ideation, or CPTSD, or pedophiles, whom a standard therapist will not be able to help much due to a lack of training or experience. Obviously, reaching out to a specialized therapist is not affordable for many people.

In circumstances such as these, is it better for the person to get whatever therapy they can afford, or for them to go without? I want to know if inadequate therapy can be worse than no therapy at all.

Can one change one’s name to a mononym during the marriage process?

I am aware that it is legal in the United States to have a mononymous name (one singular name instead if First and Last), and I also know that you can change your name when you get married.

As far as you know, in your jurisdiction, would I be able to remove my middle and last name when I get married? I know it’s inconvenient and a life-long hassle, but I really am considering and would like to kill two birds with one stone if possible.

What are the consequences of a declining birth rate IF the government doesn’t subsidize old people?

I am a frequent lurker here, and I often see posts regarding how low birth rates will cause nations to collapse as a smaller workforce is forced to sustain a larger aging population. I have also seen this repeated outside of the subreddit.

With that in mind, I want to know what you all believe the consequences would be if the governments of the world simply stopped providing retirees with any benefits at all. No more healthcare, no more gov pension, no more housing assistance or food benefits. You got no savings or family and can’t work? You all know what used to happen to the elderly before.

So, with all that said: what would be the negatives of a declining population if old people don’t need to be propped up anymore?

Who is Great Value Roger?

Apologies if this is off-topic. I keep seeing posts referring to “GV Roger” and I don’t know who Great Value Roger is. I dropped the manga during egghead cuz it sucked, so maybe I’m just ignorant.

Did you ever stop feeling like an outsider?

I’ve lived in the US for over a decade and have been a citizen for over a year now. Yet, despite my paperwork and proficiency in the language, I never once have felt like an American.

I always find myself wondering how people who “belong” perceive me. I know I have an accent and that I look different. I know they can tell I’m from a foreign country, and it just torments me day after day. I know you’ll say I need a therapist for these feelings, but I know at least some of you here know how I feel. Did you ever stop feeling like a foreigner?
