flower pot bee

Those are cymbidium terrestrial orchid roots, common balcony ornamental here in Portugal. I watered the plant this morning, and apparently disturbed the nest, as this bee spent the next few minutes digging mud out of its nest.

I guess this is loosely speaking a leaf cutter bee. I've seen some evidence of real leaf cutters, but not so much really lately, and I'm not saying this bee actually does that, just a family trait. This one is pretty big, almost the size of a small bumblebee. Inaturalist didn't turn up any real convincing suggestion.

ECO mode

If heating and air conditioning are off, and the regen paddle setting is 0, is there any remaining difference between the modes - Sport, ECO, normal? 2021 Niro.

I habitually drop the paddle regen to 0 (none.) I like the way the car drives better, I like that brake lights will come on when I slow with the brake, and from very casual observation of mileage outcomes, just using the brake is at least not much worse and maybe better. Right now it's in ECO mode, which as far as I can tell just means it starts up with double paddle regen.

MSA 220C vs stone pine

A little clear-up work yesterday. I have the impression some people think that a battery powered saw be too feeble for more than pruning. Not the case. I have no complaints.

fallen timber

Complete novice here. Terrible wind storm blew down half the big pines out back, a few months ago, and I've been trying to cut them up, just to accelerate their return to the earth, and clear some through access. Significant fire danger, I think. These are the classic "stone pine", with a spreading canopy of big branches, and when they go down, they tend to be propped up to some extent by what used to be horizontal canopy branches.

So here I am, cutting up big horizontal trees with my electric saw, and it's annoyingly often that the saw gets clamped inside the log and I have to go back and get the bow saw or something to rescue it.

It's easy to see which way overall the log is going to break - normally, supported on both ends and therefore breaks down - but there's a hitch. The basic problem is that the log doesn't just fall apart, it falls together, so to speak, the two ends trying to occupy the same space, along with my saw.

Normally I start with a fairly deep cut on top, and then cut up from underneath. I thought of it just this morning after a session, so I haven't tried it, but ... the closer to the bottom the saw is when the log breaks, the more open the cut will be. So maybe I should be trying to bring that first top cut down past the middle of the log. Where if it gets stuck, it will be really hard to get out. so ... maybe start that by plunging through and leave some for last on top to keep the cut open. Anyone have a better Idea?

I do not love thee, Dr. Fell

Suppose your brother has a girlfriend Mme X, who is kind to animals, picks up the tab when it's her turn, and generally behaves herself. But there's something about the squint of her eyes, the sound of her laugh, her weird humor, whatever -- you don't like her, never could like her.

Our pseudo-deterministic philosophy* actually has the potential to rescue you from a terrible error here. Many people in this situation, will be troubled by the apparent injustice - she obviously didn't really choose to be the way she is, so she doesn't deserve to be disliked for it. But that doesn't make her any more likeable, not a bit. So - here's the big mistake - to resolve this dilemma, it becomes necessary to find her really culpable of something. I'm not making this up - watch people do it, and they'll be pretty obvious.

Well, of course the thing is, in our pseudo-deterministic reality, she can't really be culpable of anything, can she?

Yet we certainly do like some people, and dislike others, so we have to simply accept that for what it is. I knew a guy who didn't like cucumbers. You don't like Mme X. I don't like rap music. There is no question of justice involved.

[*] By pseudo-deterministic, I mean to include the possibility of fundamental randomness, along with strict determinism. There's probably a better word.

carrasco

Supplementary Vote

Where I used to live in the US northwest, there's a chronic interest in ranked choice voting, and accordingly I regularly find myself in the position of defending the usual Instant Runoff Voting system. Which I'm sure would be better than FPTP, but it's a bit of a struggle.

You can't explain how it works, they say. Well, at best I don't think I could expect everyone to understand my explanation. And it has some weird edges, where your 2nd best vote is more likely to count if you voted 1st for a major loser.

What I think I really need out of it, is just one backup vote, so I can vote for that anarchist welder, and have a 2nd best choice in the very likely case she loses. Supplementary Vote does that, and is arguably less weird for voters and for people trying to advocate for it.

But - in my area the interest seems to be restricted to using IRV for the primary election, to get two candidates for the general. Replacing a "top two primary" system. Whether this makes sense or not. Supplementary Vote should be fine for that, I think, but the rule has to be generalized: decide top N+1 by first choice votes, and assigning 2nd choice votes from the remaining ballots; where N is the number of winners. For a one and done election, N = 1. For a top two primary, N = 2.

How's your guts?

Since moving to Portugal, my gut hasn't been what it was back in the US. I mean, much of the time it's normal, but have a hard time particularly after dining out. The commonly experienced traveler's malady, but I've been here 3 years. Just wondering if my experience here is unusual?
