AR Rahman + Hans Zimmer on Ramayan: I’m genuinely sceptical

I'm starting to have some doubts about AR Rahman's involvement in Ramayanam. His music seems to be losing its touch in recent historical and epic films like Bantwara 1947, Chhaava, and the Ponniyin Selvan series. One reason Bantwara isn't attracting audiences is that its full music, including the background score, feels pretty flat during the emotional moments.

Honestly, I often feel like the background music doesn't really capture the emotional weight or intensity that certain scenes need.

When I think about this, the album that stands out is Jodhaa Akbar (2008), but to be frank, it feels like Rahman's last truly outstanding and memorable album was ages ago.

The fact that Rahman and Hans Zimmer are teaming up for Ramayan is both intriguing and a bit worrying. While Zimmer can definitely create a grand sound, a real epic needs more than just big sound effects; it requires themes, emotion, a sense of identity, and musical pieces that stick with you.

I really hope Ramayan surprises me; however, given the recent track record, I'm feeling more cautiously pessimistic than excited.

Is anyone else feeling this way, or has Rahman's recent work left you feeling unsatisfied too?

They are Going Marval Way - We yet not know what's there in Final Version.

Looking at this frame and many otheres there's complete change in set up. And this is classic marval Style of hiding things.

When you do such VFx heavy film , you have everything in your hand to deliver something that can give audiance an idea of setup but don't give you final version. As WIP goes till the very end day of final release.

Excited, Concerned - Just 3 Months To Go

Excited as just less than 100 days to go(precisely 3 Months) Concerned - Don't even have official Character posters. No assets regarding Movie other than a trailer. No out of Marketing for this epic saga. This will huge setback.

Still Hopeful. Let's GO.

Better Editor like Ojas Gautam for trailer and Other assets?

Ojas gautam cut the arguably best trailers of recent time the Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar the revenge.

Ramayan too need someone who know the language of new kind of cinema which penetrate the audiance to go to theaters and experiance this grand level of epic cinema.

Why Ramayana Reminds Me So Much of Ra.One

Well, get ready to read a long piece, so please carry on with me. 😅

I am drawing a great many similarities between these two films, while at the same time hoping that history doesn't turn out in a wrong way. I really do want the film Ramayana, with Ranbir Kapoor and Yash in it, to become the greatest cinematic success that India has ever had.

Moreover, I admire SRK not only as an actor but also because of his vision, his readiness to take risks, and the way he is as a person. When looking back at Ra.One, I can't help but see some interesting similarities.

I. Technology that is ahead of its time

The film Ra.One (2011) was a major turning point for Indian cinema when it came to special effects, as it broke through boundaries which a very small number of people thought Bollywood could reach and stayed as a standard for almost 15 years.

The Ramayana is now trying to do the same thing—but on an even larger scale. It is competing with the very best in the world in the areas of VFX, CGI, virtual production, and cinematic storytelling.

II. A genre that is seldom attempted

Ra.One was the first film in Indian cinema to explore the superhero genre. Although it may or may not have been a success, it did alter the way audiences conceived of an Indian superhero film.

Just as the Ramayana is not merely another mythical adaptation, it is now being presented as a large-scale cinematic event using the latest technology and has brought together movie stars from almost every major film industry in India.

III. Global musical collaborations

Ra.One surprised everyone by bringing Akon to sing Hindi songs. This was unimaginable at the time.

The Ramayana is providing us with something just as historic in that Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman are collaborating for the first time; that is a musical combination of a once-in-a-generation occurrence.

IV. The villain

Funny coincidence.

Both of the films are centered on a deadly antagonist called Ra.One (Raavan).

The first is a digital AI supervillain based on the name, whereas the second is the famous king of Lanka himself.

V. Great moments vs. great storytelling

A major criticism of Ra.One was its uneven script.

Yet almost everyone remembers moments like:

the train sequence, the car chase, Ra.One's formation, G.One's entry, the emotional climax.

Those moments still do so today.

Ramayana (Part 1 ) has the potential to deliver unforgettable cinematic moments:

Devasur Sangram, Indra vs Ravana, Sita Haran, Jatayu's sacrifice, Ram vs Many Asuras

I only hope that those moments are the result of excellent storytelling rather than merely being presented as visual spectacles.

VI. Ambition invited criticism

Before it was released, Ra.One was mercilessly mocked.

All aspects of it were put under the microscope, including its budget, the special effects, the marketing strategy, and SRK's decision to make a superhero film.

The Ramayana is now coming under similar criticism; all the teaser images, costumes, casting decisions, and VFX shots are being analysed months ahead of the film's release.

The larger the dream is, the more severe the criticism will be.

VII. Passion projects

Both films seem to be nothing like a standard commercial enterprise.

Ra.One was obviously a project that Shah Rukh Khan had genuinely wanted to carry out, and for that he spent many years, a lot of money, and some of his reputation in an effort to advance Indian cinema.

On the basis of all we all know until now, Ramayana also seems to be a passion project for its makers, the film being made with the aim of creating something timeless rather than just targeting a profit at the box office.

VIII. An attempt to raise India's global cinematic standards

The two films were not simply aiming to amuse.

They were trying to show that Indian cinema could measure up to Hollywood in terms of scale, imagination, and technical execution.

It's an objective well worth appreciating, no matter what the end result is.

IX. The weight of expectations

Ra.One entered theatres carrying enormous expectations. Its budget, technology, and marketing campaign made it one of the most anticipated Indian films of its time.

Ramayana is walking a similar path. Even before its release, it has become one of the most talked-about Indian films ever, with immense expectations around its scale, storytelling, VFX, music, and cultural significance.

The hype is already historic.

X. The biggest difference

I hope that history changes here.

While Ra.One featured world-class visuals, it could not maintain that level of quality in its screenplay.

If the Ramayana is able to get its writing, its emotions, and its character developments right, while at the same time providing the visual effects that everyone has come to expect, it could truly become one of the landmark films in Indian cinema.

Visuals cause people to buy the ticket.

Because of their emotions they remember the film for decades.

I truly hope the film based on the Ramayana, change the way world look at INDIAN CINEMA and OUR CULTURE 🤞

The most underrated detail about the Ramayan trailer launch. PEAK DETAILING

Did anyone else notice this? Or am I thinking too much into it?

I. The trailer coming out at 4:15 AM, which is Brahma Muhurta.

II. This is the first day of the month of Shravan, which is Mahadev's month.

III. The trailer's running time is precisely 4 minutes and 15 seconds.

If the level of detail has been deliberately included, then the creators are not simply releasing a trailer; they are constructing a narrative around the most profound spiritual element in the whole epic: Shiva.

Consider the dynamic in this situation. All of the three fundamental forces of the Ramayana are based on Shiva:

I. Before taking on Lanka, Rama constructs the Lingam and offers worship to Shiva at Rameshwaram and is frequently referred to as Mahadev's most devoted follower.

II. Hanuman, who is the most powerful supporter of Rama, is in fact a form of Shiva .

III. Ravana was probably the most intense devotee of Shiva that ever lived, he also composed the Shiva Tandava Stotram and was known for his intense tapas.

All three connected to Shiva Thread.

If the people who made this film had deliberately chosen the Brahma Muhurta launch, the Shravan timing, and a running time of 4:15 then they must truly understand the lore.

What do you all think? A masterclass in marketing or a real skill in subtle storytelling?

Ramayana isn't a VFX test. It's an emotional test.

The whole world is talking about scale, VFX, battles, and actors. But if the makers want Ramayana to live on in history, they must understand that the VFX should be there to elevate the emotions. And When DNEG is doing all these we must not be sceptical about VFX and CGI.

The VFX should surprise us, and that would but the performances should stay with the audience long after the show, and the audience should come to watch this film to feel something that they would want to share. So, here's my list of points after reading a lot ,that RAMAYANA should focus on...

  1. The Emotions (The Heart of the Film)

Ayodhya Kanda

1.Ram's non-challenge to his father's order. 2.Dashratha's grief on banishing his son. 3.Kaushalya's despair. 4.Sumitra's advice to Lakshman about serving Ram. 4.Lakshman's anger. 5.Sita's insistence to follow Ram. 6.Ram and Sita's conversation on exile. 7.Farewell by the people of Ayodhya. 8.Guha's devotion and farewell. 9.Bharata's return and shock on the happenings. 10.Bharata's fight with Kaikayi. 11.Bharata's grief on Dashratha's death. 12.Bharata rejecting the throne. 13.The conversation between Bharata and Ram in Chitrakoot. 14.The great Ram-Bharat Milan (One of the most touching conversations in the world's literary history). 15.Bharata carrying the Paduka back to Ayodhya. These should leave the audience stunned.

  1. Love & Relationships

1.Ram and Sita's first meeting. 2.Sita's infatuation with Ram in Shiva Dhanush. 3.Shooting the bow of Shiva. 4.Ram-Sita's marriage. 5.The bond between the four brothers, especially between Ram and Lakshman. 6.Lakshman's devotion to Ram. 7.Sita's devotion despite the exile conditions. 8.Ram's affection for Sita during the exile.

These should be established so that the audience feels that Ram and Sita are the most eligible couple to fall in love even before the grief hits.

  1. Grief

  2. Dashratha's death by Ram's memory.

  3. Ram's inquiry of the Sita's kidnapping.

  4. Ram's grief in the entire search.

  5. Ram asking all things in the forest about Sita's whereabouts.

  6. Jatayu's death.

This is where the actors need to deliver their best performance because grief is much more powerful than any VFX in a film.

  1. Rage Ramayana has plenty of rage that's well placed to show the characters' true personalities. Each one's outburst should be shown so that the audience gets the right impression.

  2. Vishwamitra fights all the evil forces.

  3. Lakshman shows his rage at Sita's Swayamvara.

  4. Lakshman rages and questions Ram when he is made to accept exile.

  5. Lakshman challenges Bharata when he comes to know that Ram is not interested in the throne.

  6. Ram's anger at Sita Haran.

  7. Sugriva's frustration and humiliation.

Each character should have an outburst that makes them memorable.

  1. Bhakti

This is where Ramayana differs from a regular fantasy film. These are the performances that will leave the audience wanting the second part.

  1. Hanuman seeing Ram for the first time.

  2. Ram seeing Hanuman's wisdom.

  3. Hanuman accepting Ram as his Bhagwan.

  4. Kevat's service.

  5. Jatayu's supreme sacrifice.

  6. Bharata's adherence to Ram's Paduka.

These performances should move the audience to tears and should not be exaggerated.

  1. Dharma & Philosophy

The dialogues are where the story's philosophy lies. They are the reasons why even today the characters from Ramayana are fondly remembered.

  1. Ram's adherence to Dharma over personal pleasure.
  2. Bharata's devotion to Ram and rejection of the throne.
  3. Lakshman's questions to Ram during the exile.

The dialogues about the principles of kingship, devotion, and sacrifice. These dialogues should define the film's long-term success as well as be a talking point after the film's release.

  1. The Rise of Ravana

Do not show Ravana as an evil character. Instead, establish why the Daityas used to fear him and why even the Deva's could not stop him. 1 Ravana's tapasya. 3 Brahma's boon. 4. Ravana's knowledge. 5. Ravana's defeating many kings. 6. The Devas not being able to defeat him. 7. Ravana defeating the three worlds. 8. Pushpaka Vimana. 9. Ravana lifting Kailash. 10. Shiva humbling him. 11. Ravana's love for Mandodari and Meghnad. 12. Ravana's pride starting to replace his wisdom. A multi-faceted villain is always scarier than a straightforward villain.

  1. Deva-Asura Touch

The Deva and Asura elements give Ramayana its mythological flavor. This should be included, but the story should not revolve solely around mythology.

  1. The conversation between Deva about Ravana's reign of terror.
  2. Lord Vishnu taking birth as Ram to fight Ravana.
  3. The birth of the four brothers.
  4. The divine weapons gifted to them.
  5. Vishwamitra showing Ram the astras.
  6. The cosmic significance of Ram's avatar.
  7. Conversations with the Deva-Asura about the world before Rama's birth.
  8. Vanara's birth.
  9. Deva's reactions to important events that took place in Ramayana.

The presence of this mythology is what makes the film special and different, but it is not the reason for its long-term appeal.

  1. Hanuman's Introduction

If Part 1's cater just Hanuman's introduction, then it should be made memorable.

  1. Hanuman's first conversation with Ram.
  2. Ram's instant appreciation of Hanuman's intellect.
  3. Lakshman's observation of their interaction. Hanuman's humility. This has to be the start of an everlasting friendship in literature.

If the film's climax is Sita Haran, then either of these two would make the audience want to watch more. If the film ends with Sita Haran, then it should finish on these emotional notes:

  1. Ravana leaving in the Pushpaka Vimana.

  2. Ram going back to the empty forest after learning about Sita's whereabouts.

  3. Ram's panic turning into grief.

  4. The discovery of Jatayu.

  5. The first rays of hope after realizing that Ravana is not as strong as he seems. Either of these would keep the audience waiting for the next part.

  6. The Spectacle (After All The Above Points Are Done)

Yes, the film needs a great VFX and special effects, but they should only play second fiddle to the performances and the story.

  1. The wonderful astras of Vishwamitra.
  2. Shiva Dhanush.
  3. Tataka.
  4. Maricha's deer.
  5. Sita Haran.
  6. Jatayu fighting Ravana.
  7. Ravana's Lanka.
  8. Pushpaka Vimana.
  9. The Deva-Asura elements.
  10. The celestial weapons.
  11. The forests.
  12. Ayodhya, Mithila, etc.

But all these would be just the tools to create the effect. The best compliment people can give this film would be that they felt like "I was actually there in those times" and "I actually felt the emotions". That's how Ramayana has survived so long even after all these years. If the makers can make sure that the audience feels connected to the characters and the emotions in the film, then the VFX and other effects will become the cherry on top.

Why did MAHINDRA MOJO become a failure in India?

I have Mahindra Mojo, and its power, performance is exceptionally well tuned. It's been a great ride, easy handling and a powerful machine.

Was it part on Mahindra which made this beast failure? Or Was it price or maintanence or it's just the Brand which couldn't pace up ?
