need help with usmle timeline please

hi, i need help planning my usmle timeline.

i'm currently in 4th year and will take my 4th prof exams in december 2026. i was originally planning to take step 1 this october, but that's no longer realistic seeing i haven't even done my first pass of FA yet

if i take step 1 in march 2027 (during final year), how should i plan step 2 and usce? i'm confused because i know electives usually have to be done while you're still a student.

my ideal plan is to take step 2 before usce since a stronger score might help me get rotations in a different specialty.

has anyone been in a similar situation or have any advice on how to structure this timeline?

looking for advice and mentorship in surgical research

hi everyone!

i'm a non-us img currently in med school with a long-term interest in general surgery. i'm preparing for step 1 right now, and since i'm on summer break, i want to spend the next couple of months doing as much meaningful surgery research as i can.

i've worked on a couple of meta-analyses, a few review papers, and some other projects, so i'm comfortable with the research process and plan on continuing to lead projects of my own. i'm not looking for free authorships or someone to hand me publications. i genuinely enjoy research and want to get better at it.

what i'm really looking for is someone who's already been through the process. if there are any us med students, surgery residents, fellows, attendings, or researchers who publish regularly and wouldn't mind answering questions once in a while or giving me some guidance, i'd really appreciate it. i'd love to learn how to build projects that actually have an impact and have a realistic chance of being published in well-respected surgical journals.

if anyone's open to mentoring or just chatting from time to time, i'd be really grateful. thanks! :)

hi. im 22f i dont have any gyms here for women where i live and im home for vacations. im actively in a caloric deficit too for about 6 months on and off now. im turning it into a proper on caloric deficit now and want to start some proper workout routine too to gain strength and endurance and bonus if it helps me shape up a bit with the diet yk

anyway, can someone help me out with workouts? should i go for those 40 min youtube workouts or should i get resistance bands/dumbbells and a gym mat and do my own exercises. goal is to be able to do proper push ups, pull ups and beat my little (strength training at home) brother in arm wrestling. sounds funny but that's about it. please help.

med student looking for small video editing / animation gigs :)

hey everyone :)

i’m a 22f med student and i’m looking to make a little extra money on the side. nothing crazy, just enough to help pay for food, coffee, occasional nights out, etc.

i make animations, graphics, edits, and random creative stuff on instagram, and i’ve gotten pretty decent at it over the last few years. i mostly enjoy making short-form content and creative edits rather than super serious corporate-style work.

things i can help with:
• reels, tiktoks, youtube shorts
• simple animations
• motion graphics
• music edits
• fan edits
• social media graphics
• making content look less boring

i’ve also done video editing before, but i learned the hard way that spending hours going through 3-4 hour recordings and turning them into a 10-minute video is probably not my calling 😭

i’m mostly looking for small projects and i’m not charging a ton. if you’ve got something in mind, feel free to message me and i’ll send over my instagram so you can see my work and decide if it’s your vibe.

thanks <3

started step 1 prep about 2 months ago and i feel completely stuck

i first started with biochem and got through a couple of bootcamp playlists. then i decided biochem was probably better left for later, so i switched to revising cvs from last year. i wasn’t doing it very thoroughly and realized i barely remembered anything from the bootcamp videos i had watched a few months earlier, even though i had annotated first aid while watching them.

then i switched to endocrine because people told me it was one of the shorter systems. i got through a few bootcamp playlists, annotated first aid, and then moved on again. after that i started neurology, got through most of it with only some pathology and pharm left, then switched to psychiatry. now i’m doing psych and still have psych pharm left, plus a lot of content overall.

the problem is not really that i lose interest in the subjects. it’s that i constantly feel like i’m moving too slowly. i haven’t done a single uworld question yet, and every day that passes makes me feel more behind.

my current study method is watching bootcamp at 1.5x while following along in first aid. if the instructor mentions something that’s not in first aid, i annotate it. i keep telling myself i’ll come back later and properly read and review everything, but that never happens. so i end up spending all my time watching videos and annotating without actually retaining much. i don’t feel like i’m memorizing anything or learning anything.

a senior suggested that i stop relying so heavily on bootcamp and instead use first aid as the main resource, using chatgpt to explain concepts i don’t understand and only watching bootcamp for difficult topics. that honestly makes sense to me.

the issue is that whenever a bootcamp instructor mentions extra details that aren’t in first aid, i feel like i have to learn and memorize them too because otherwise why would they mention them? i end up getting overwhelmed by the amount of information.

i’m planning to take step 1 this year, but with how things are going that feels less and less realistic.

has anyone else been in a situation like this? does it sound like a resource problem, a study method problem, or something else entirely? what would you do if you were in my position?

is anyone actually doing meaningful research?

i mean it's the same everywhere. and dont think im on some moral high ground but it feels so empty. nothing is actually meaningful when it comes to patient care and all.

i have 4 papers published but ive stopped now since a year. not because i dont have opportunities, but because it feels VERY hollow and a very made up practice. sorta like how you force yourself to get those extra 2k steps in after your dinner by walking in your room (i do that). i mean it is necessary, but it is forced. and does it even add that much to your CV? idk

do you have thoughts on the matter? lately ive been seeing everything wrong but i dont know how to fix anything. any solutions?

step 1 accountability/mentor

hi. 4th year medstudent here and ive been going through some mild depression i think

anyway, started prepping for step 1 last year. did CVS and pulmo properly (no UW though)

this year got properly serious and started again but I CANT SEEM TO COMPLETE ANY SYSTEM. i started with biochem (dont ask why) and i left it midway. started neuro, almost completed it and then left it to start endo. nearly did that too, got bored and switched to PSYCH. not im almost done with psych FA. mind you i havent even TOUCHED uworld since ive bought it (since sep '25)

a friend suggested looking for people who have taken step 1 and can help me out. i know people charge for that sort of thing but if anyone just wants to just help me out, in any way, PLSPLSPLS. give suggestions

Non-US IMGs who matched into GS (cat/prelim), what’s your profile like?

Please. Drop your stats and the year you matched. I really need some sense of direction figuring out if I should put my efforts into GS or not.
