Planning for Three Weeks in Europe

I am in the very early stages of planning and I definitely have "Do It All!" fever. I'm planning on going for ~3 weeks traveling (thinking of doing a one way ticket and see how the days land once I'm there, but would like to keep it right around 21 days). First time in Europe, not completely new to backpacking light/short trips, very frequent budget traveler.

I've heard people recommend 2-3 days at each city/location to enjoy it. Does that include daytrips? How do you factor that in when planning?

Would you say it's better to spend 2-3 days in every location to see a little of a lot, or would it be better to plan for 5-6 days in each location and only hit ~3 in that time?

I'm looking at the Slovenia-Croatia area. Possible plans to land in Portugal for a few days to hang out with family, hop on a plane/train to jump to Slovenia area. I'm very comfortable on long train trips, and thought this would be a good way to see the Spain+France landscapes without stopping much or at all. I have ideas to jump through Hungary and spend time in Western Ukraine with distant relatives, but feel that may put a burden on enjoying the coast.

I'm tempted on spending the main hunk of time in Slovenia-Croatia area (12+ days), but then I feel like I'm missing out elsewhere.

Definitely just struggling with the mentality of wanting to see it all but wanting to enjoy myself. Big on hiking/scenery/beaches, sightseeing, would love to meet some people and socialize on the way (but I'm not huge on partying), explore local culture as much as possible. Prefer cheaper than not.

Reading while backpacking Europe solutions?

Planning a Europe backpacking trip for within the next handful of years, budgeting allows. While reading today, I had a thought: Is there a way to easily read while traveling lightly and quickly?

I always bring a book while traveling, but most of my travels are busy and/or with family and friends- so limited time to read. One book is typically more than enough. During regular life, I can easily get through 2-3 large books a month.

Obviously, it isn't super smart to bring 2-3 large, heavy books in a bag, even if I AM able to get through them. The trip I am looking at planning would have plenty of downtime for reading, through relaxation time and lomg public transport. I am not a huge fan at all of kindles (I like the fidget aspect of the book), so that's not my top choice.

Are there any sort of international library systems? Or maybe something else I haven't found/thought of?

Backpacking Europe - How to decide where to go?

I (an American) have always wanted to go travel Europe. I would love to go away backpacking route, but not the insanely intense kind of trips. My family came from Ukraine a couple of generations ago and we still have VERY distant relatives that I wanted to visit while traveling over there. But with the war and political tensions, I'm not so sure. My main language is English, but I do speak just a tiny bit of Ukrainian.

I have a close family friend in Portugal, though I've never had any initial interest in exploring that area. I'm not as keen on visiting heavily touristed areas, but also understand that there may be heavier language/cultural barriers as you get further away from them. I'd love to solo trip (single female) unless I can find somebody I can trust and stand enough. I'd be happy doing tenting, hostel, airbnb style sleeping, driving, train, walking, anything really. Very outdoorsy and would love to see some different landscapes without lines of tourists- willing to hike a ways. I'd ideally like to go for a week, maybe two MAXIMUM, but I'm not sure if that's a feasible timeline

Over the years, I've tried to keep track of places I think I'd like to visit, but have yet to settle on my top priority. I would prefer a lower budget than not. Climate/weather isn't a huge biggy for me, but I'd prefer a majority of my time to be spent in 60-80°F or so. I'm willing to go somewhere warmer or colder if the sights are worth it though. Anything outdoorsy is my main priority, as well as locations that heavily reflect local culture. Happy to visit historical sites, but museums aren't my priority by any means. Would love to go more of the markets, small towns, villages kind of route as much as possible.

When my grandparents were alive, they wintered in Cozumel and we went down to see them several times. They had a tiny apartment house in a regular neighborhood. We biked everywhere we went on the island, snorkeled almost every day, went to a different little local restaurant every day, walked down to the market square each afternoon, went to the garage grocery store every day for breakfast. We stayed far away from the tourist traps and the resorts/villas. I'm hoping to recreate somewhat of a similar vibe travel wise. I always knew we were "tourists" there, and anywhere else I go will follow suite, but it felt so much more real and intimate- and was much cheaper.

How do you decide? How long did you plan for before going? How did your trip plans change along the way? Do you have any recommendations for places to go?

Realism of biomes/landscapes on original fantasy map?

Hello all!

I've been working on a map for my work-in-progress epic fantasy story. I've gone through several versions of the map and am ready to finalize it. I don't have a whole lot of room for adjustment of whole biomes/landscapes, but would rather try to do it sooner than later if necessary.

This is one of my most recent versions. Previous to this, there was no southeastern continent, and instead it extended off of the savanna into a jungle peninsula curving westward slightly. I felt this didn't work out story or map wise, but now I am double guessing the map part.

I am not looking for complete realism, but I am somebody who is personally taken out of a story when worlds don't line up somewhat reasonably. What doesn't quite work? How- from a more knowledgeable perspective than just "oh this looks good!" -would the landscapes and weathers interact? This is a fairly politics-and-economy heavy story, so it is important to me to understand the physical workings of the land as much as possible. What are some things that could be adjusted/changed/added to make it make as much sense as possible?

(The map is not centered exactly to north for story telling reasons, but for sake of ease, I referenced directions as they would appear if this map were centered as is.)

Why do people live in Phoenix AZ?

I'm from a northern US border state. We get anywhere from -50° to 110° through the seasons. Hot is hot and cold is cold. We get all of the above and more.

I went to Phoenix last June for a few days for work. Checked the forecast while I was planning the trip, 106°. Then looked at the week forecast, all temps of 100-110°. Then looked at the month-long forecast: same thing. I was appalled. I knew Phoenix was toasty, but I somehow didn't expect it to be to that extent.

I got off the plane and was slightly surprised at how it didn't feel as hot as I expected for a place that hadn't gone below 75° in the last month (which I assume is because it's a dry heat?), but it was still unfavorable to me.

I spent the days there dodging from building to car to building. The heat seemed like such an inconvenience. How do you get anything done? Go anywhere? Live a life? Does everybody just sit inside all day in the warm months? Doesn't it add extra hassle and expenses to life?

I genuinely want to know: What draws you to live there? What keeps you there?

As an outdoorsy person, I cannot imagine my life being so limited by constant heat to that extent.

Looking for critiques on arrangement of landscapes/biomes on fantasy map!

Sketched up a new version of my old map. Still trying to keep most of the general layout as this is attached to a story that is fairly written/planned out. It is a fantasy story, but I am looking to have a semi-realistic world.

Included a photo of the new sketch, a hastily made key, and the previous map for reference of what it was before. I know my style is a bit non traditional (plus I changed the mountain style two or three times- whoops), so please ask me questions if needed to clarify anything!

My main worries are:

  • Arrangements of mountains.

  • How rainshadows and weather blowing in from the seas would affect climate. I've been fighting with the location of the main continent's desert, savanna, delta, and lower mountains for this reason. It doesn't have to be scientifically realistic, but I do want some realism.

  • Appearance of the badlands. I have them set as badlands similar to those of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park and I do want them to be in that specific location, neighboring the landscapes they neighbor. However, I'm willing to adjust a few things if absolutely necessary.

I'm happy to take thoughts of any kind though regarding biomes and arrangement! Is there anything you would expect to be notable based on the arrangement of landscapes? I feel like I'm not catching something with the main continent and the south eastern continent in relation to each other.

Not looking for advice on style or design quite yet.

Problematic low stakes character in a "high" stakes story?

I've come to the unfortunate conclusion that my MC is a lowstakes character in a way that causes a bit of conflict.

Story is set in a high fantasy/medieval style world. I have most of the series planned out to an extent, but am obviously focusing on the rough first book right now. Already did a first draft- chapters in words "on paper"- but know I have A LOT to change.

First book takes place at a fantasy academy dedicated to teaching about a magic similar to animal shapeshifting. MC, like many of the students there, is a war orphan. The rest of the series goes into that world, but the first book takes place at the VERY isolated academy. There is very little to no contact to the outside world at this academy. I've been playing off and on with the academy being more of a student-led democracy + teachers type school, but I'm not quite sure.

The story runs through what should be the end of her academic career as war begins in the rest of the main continent. With students from all over, we see a bit of a "Lord of the Flies" reaction at the academy. Lots of politics involved. Everything that happens outside in the war, as they slowly uncover secrets and lies, is mirrored through the students. At the very end, the academy is essentially invaded by the bad guys. Throughout the story, MC battles with the fact that this place she has called home isn't quite safe OR the comfort she is looking for anymore. Where books and schedules kept her happy, she now begins to question to real motivations and politics within the isolated academic structure.

The thing is: I have it set that she quite enjoys it there and pushes back against accusations against the school from other students for a fair part of the story. She doesn't have a whole lot of plans or goals to work towards. About halfway through the story, she partakes in a survivalistic competition. Up to that point, that is her driving goal, but after that, it gets a little hazy. She works to uncover secrets that eventually lead up to the "invasion" of the academy, but nothing she does actively changes the outcome or what happens. In the end, she and several other students flee the academy, which I can tie into a bit of character arc work, but the lack of goals is throwing me for a loop.

I thought about her having a goal to work towards a specific career, which I will likely keep anyways, but it doesn't tie well into the invasion ending as a driving goal, and she can't do a whole lot towards that specific career while in the academy anyways.

Any thoughts? I'm more than happy to discuss further and/or answer any other questions!

Looking for critique on fantasy map!

Looking for critique on the biomes + landscapes on my map before I go into a more finished product. Pic 3 was the start of that, but I'm redoing it and want to clear up some issues first.

Fantasy world, but looking for it to be fairly realistic still. Playing around with variations of the western coast running of the left hand side of the map, but not sure yet. Most of the changes I will have to make to this map will change the story up a bit, but oh well. I'd rather figure it out now than hate it all later. Map isn't entirely centered on north. If it fell/rotated about 15° counterclockwise, it would be closer.

I know the lower mountain range has conflicting issues with the desert, northern foothills, and jungle.

Mostly focusing on the mainland continent, not as worried about the northeastern one! But any thoughts are helpful!

  1. Heavily foothilled mountains, scattered dense forests of deciduous trees. Wet and chilly, but below the peaks only occasionally gets snow during the coldest months.
  2. Savanna
  3. Tropical/lowland rainforest style
  4. Sandy desert transitioning to more of a rocky desert up towards the mountain slopes.
  5. River delta, very little to no trees.
  6. Alluvial plain (please correct if that is the wrong term)
  7. Prairie further south and west, steppe further north and east
  8. Badlands
  9. Temperate mixed forest, primarily deciduous
  10. Coniferous forest
  11. Tundra

Edit: Context

Map is for a fantasy, medieval-esque style story. Throughout the entirety of a war, the characters travel to and/interact with the majority of the cultures and regions on this map. During the setting of the story, most of the regions don't operate distinct borders due to cultural interactions and agreements. The only difference is when it comes to distinct landscape changes (such as opposite sides of a mountain range).

Thoughts on original world fantasy map?

Looking for some thoughts on my original world fantasy map. First image is a mostly finished version. Second image is a very unfinished version.

The delta space on the south coast feels way too big in the second image, and I'm starting to feel like the landmass as a whole is too blocky. Thoughts?

I have a 1 year old female Belgian Tervuren. Really lovely toy drive, started in disc foundations. Because of the terrible winters here, most of her "working" life so far has been spent on soft frisbees. We did a TON of trading work as a younger puppy and she is fantastic about giving up toys, retrieving toys, working for toys, etc. We can work for sticks, frisbees, bumpers, tugs, squeakies, anything. She LOVES her chuck-it frisbees with the hole in the middle, and so do I. Perfect for rollers, small air catches, tugging, swimming.

Only issue is that "frisbee is god". Seriously. She is OBSESSED with frisbee, but in a safe and good way. She carries it around all day, will do just about anything for her frisbee. However, that also means she only wants the frisbee she actively has. If I bring out two of the same exact frisbees, she will pick one to favor. Works well, gives it up without issues, etc. Will still do things for the other one, but there is a clear distinction of which frisbee she wants.

When we want to get into more traditional frisbee work, it has also made that hard. She picks her favorite and gets frustrated when we don't just play with that one, and only begrudgingly plays with the other 1-3 I bring out.

For example, if I bring out two chuck-it frisbees, same color/size/previous use, and present one, she will go into work mode for that one. Do a roller with it, she'll go right after it and bring it back without hesitation. Switch frisbees immediately, do roller with "undesired" frisbee. She'll chase after it, go to strike it, realize it isn't the one she wants and come back for the one I have. It will take several send outs and much confusion/frustration from her before she finally brings the "undesired" one back.

I am starting an online dryland dock foundations class and we are required to have two equal+same exact toys. I can fulfill the second half, but not the first half.

So: Ideas on working on this without diminishing the joy she gets from working with me and the toys? Goal is for her to find equal enjoyment in toys that are the same. When I first brought her home, she was a bit of a resource guarder, but once she figured out it was fun to work WITH me, that disappeared quickly. We have NO issues anymore of RG. She constantly pushes me to work, take her toy, interact with her toy, etc. We also did a ton of "dead bunny"/"two toy game" work.

She is definitely going through a mental development period right now where she thinks more about what I ask of her, so I don't want to frustrate her too much or lower her enjoyment of work.

We have worked on a bit of shaping style work and reinforcing engagement with the undesired toy using her desired toy, but looking for other ideas. My main thing is trying to figure out how to work on disc + dock while we have favorable weather, without clashing with what I will be trying to do to get her to work with two toys equally.

What is the reason people claim when following antisemitism? Where does it stem from? How was it seen in the past vs now? Why does it seem that Jews have been largely targeted in much of history? I can "understand" being against a country for violent decisions (not specifically saying one way or another here, just a general comment), but isn't the category of semitism more of an ethnoreligious group? Isn't semitism a broader category than just Jews?

Somebody please just explain everything of semitism and anti-semitics to me lmao.

Favorite (cheaper) blow dryers?

I have Belgian Tervurens and am looking to buy a blow dryer. Currently, I only have access to one when I give them a complete bath and blowout at a friend's place- but that's 50 minutes away. I'd love to be able to randomly blow them out as needed, and maybe use it at shows.

Right now, I'm looking at Flying Pigs and K9s. I don't need a monster dryer, would like to meet in the middle on price and quality. Preferably as cheap as possible without losing too much quality. Easily mobile is a must and smaller is a preference.

What are your favorite brands and blow dryers?

Edit: Also looking at Mango?

Hey all!

I am looking at building my portfolio. Between multiple computer deaths and lots of house moves, I don't have many finish map products to show for. The ones shown below are from my current WIP story and are various revisions (due to story structure), but are generally unfinished (due to adding/changing details on personal story- not due to inability to finish art lmao)

I am looking for people willing to pay what they can (please keep in mine that top down and/or highly detailed maps take more time) for custom fantasy maps! I will only accept original worlds- no recreations of other artists'/authors' works.

My preferred area of work is landscape-only. I can add small markers for buildings/objects, but will not do city/village maps. All products will be digital, but much of the first stage will be done on paper.

Time frame cannot be guaranteed, but the goal is one month or (likely) less per commission (again, keeping in mind style and detail). I am more than willing to work to develop the map you are looking for- but if you have a clear idea of what you want right away, it WILL make things easier.

All work is completely hand drawn- no pre-made stamps and absolutely no AI. I expect that you follow suite- I will not draw worlds designed by AI or using AI references.

Please message me if you're interested!

Looking for books that are centered around following characters in an apocalyptic survival environment. Preferably more realistic and "factual" than not, especially on the survival side of things. I know everybody thinks about gathering weapons and storming the streets, but I want to read about the hardships and the rebuilding of communities and the "those who know how to mend clothes and build fires and hunt and farm become the leaders" type.

I'm fine with zombie apocalypse, but not looking for crazed zombies. Fall of technology, nuclear war, . No alien invasion. Preferably covering the events immediately following/during the apocalypse itself, not years after.
