To what extent, if any, is David Beckham considered the face of soccer in America?

I’ve recently been seeing arguments that David Beckham is essentially the face of soccer in the United States today.

Even though he’s long retired, his continued influence through LA Galaxy, his ownership role in Messi FC, and his ongoing visibility in the World Cup and MLS marketing campaigns has kept him highly recognizable. He’s also more familiar to casual American sports fans than many current or past American soccer players.

On the other hand, there are strong counterarguments. A lot of people point out the foundational role of American soccer figures, especially icons of the U.S. women’s game, and also the fact that Beckham isn’t American. From this perspective, he’s better described as a global ambassador who helped grow soccer’s popularity in the USA, rather than the face of the sport itself.

So I’m curious how others see it.

Do you agree that Beckham is the face of soccer in America today, or is that mostly a media/marketing narrative rather than reality?

If the United States had actually won the 1930 World Cup, how different would the world of soccer be today?

The US officially finished third at the inaugural 1930 World Cup. But imagine they beat Argentina in the semifinal and then upset Uruguay to become the first-ever World Cup champions.

Would that have completely changed the trajectory of soccer in the United States and around the world? Or would the Great Depression have wiped out any momentum anyway?

Is this one of the biggest "what ifs" in soccer history?

How different do you think US soccer and world football as a whole would look today if the first nation to lift the World Cup trophy had been the United States?

The Mummy (1999) is the rare movie that should be the blueprint for every modern adventure blockbuster

I rewatched The Mummy recently, and I think it's one of the best adventure movies ever made.

It has everything. Great action, pleasing horror, memorable characters, fine pacing, and just the right amount of humor. The movie never slows down, and every scene is entertaining.

The horror is also better than people give it credit for. Imhotep is genuinely creepy, the scarab beetles are terrifying, and some of the effects are surprisingly gruesome for a PG-13 film.

More than 25 years later, it still holds up. It's one of those
movies I can watch anytime and never get tired of.

Also, Brendan Fraser is perfect as Rick O'Connell. He's charismatic, badass, and all-around cool.

What made The Mummy work so well for you? And why don’t we really see movies like it being made in today’s “blockbuster” landscape?

What do you genuinely expect will happen to U.S. Soccer (and MLS) after the 2026 World Cup?

I've seen a lot of predictions ranging from "this will permanently change soccer in America" to "it'll be another short-lived bump like after 1994."

Putting hype aside, what do you actually expect to happen in the years after the 2026 World Cup?

I’m especially interested in hearing from longtime fans who've been through previous "turning point" moments. Does 2026 actually feel different, or is this just the latest cycle of BS nonsense?

Dallas and Philly paved the way...I can't wait to see what Right to Dream and SDFC produce for the USMNT 🇺🇸

Dallas and Philadelphia Union have been massive for the USMNT.

Now I'm really excited to see what SDFC and Right to Dream can do. Southern California is one of the best talent pools in the country, and Right to Dream has a proven track record of developing players.

If Dallas and Philly helped shape the 2026 USMNT, maybe SDFC helps shape the 2034 team.

Anyone else excited to see what this academy can produce? 👀⚽🇺🇸

France in Philly

Anyone know what hotel the team is staying at? And are there any planned opportunities to meet players, get autographs, or see them arrive? Any info on times would be appreciated.

FIFA has done a great job making NFL stadiums actually feel like soccer venues

FIFA has done a really good job making these stadiums feel like soccer venues instead of NFL stadiums. The vibes, camera angles, and overall presentation have been much better than I expected.

What do you all think? Have the stadiums successfully shed their NFL identity, or do they still feel like football venues trying to host soccer matches?

Is this how SDFC should be playing?

Watching the USMNT last night, especially on Gio Reyna's goal, got me thinking about SDFC.

When SDFC is at its best, they're aggressive, vertical, and willing to take risks in the final third. But too often it feels like the team gets stuck recycling possession and waiting for the perfect opening instead of just attacking.

The U.S. goal wasn't just about speed. It came from directness, quick decision-making, movement off the ball, and the confidence to attack while still maintaining possession.

Was yesterday’s overall performance the perfect example of how RTD should be playing?

Curious what everyone thinks

I’m still in shock!

I don’t even know what to say.

The team, Pochettino, and the fans delivered big time. I was not expecting anything close to his.

This has to be the best US performance in history!

The watch party videos are giving me straight-up goosebumps.

We needed this in front of the world!

Does anyone know how many consecutive passes in Gio’s goal?

Anyone else surprised by how much excitement there is around the USMNT right now?

Soldier Field was packed with USMNT fans over the weekend, and then thousands showed up for the open practice today. I genuinely wasn't expecting either of those things.

The World Cup buzz is on!

With all this momentum, I really hope USSF can capitalize on it and keep growing the sport in the U.S. The interest is clearly there.

That said, part of me can't shake the feeling that they'll find a way to fumble the opportunity. Anyone else feel the same way, or am I being too pessimistic?

Los Cafeteros

The Colombia national soccer team is staying in downtown San Diego ahead of their friendly against Jordan this weekend. Does anyone know if any of the players or the whole squad are planning to attend the Padres game at Petco Park tonight?

Controversies

SDFC was founded in 2023 and already seems to have gone through a fair amount of drama in a short period of time. Is this kind of turbulence something you’d normally expect from a new club, or does it stand out compared to other recent expansion teams? What are your thoughts on how things have unfolded so far?

SDFC Strategic Timeframe

SDFC is clearly focused on developing young players and leaning on analytics.

What are your genuine thoughts on RTD? How many years do you think it will take for this strategy to consistently payoff? Do you realistically expect a championship anytime soon?

Or do you think RTD is overrated and might not really know what they’re doing?

People often compare SDFC to the Tampa Bay Rays.

2026 MLS Summer Transfer Window

What are your expectations for the summer transfer window? Do you think we’ll see major changes to the squad, and what kind of moves would you like the club to make?

The untouchable players are Bombino, Manu, Jeppe, Godoy, and Anders.

After this window, we’ll know whether Tyler Heaps is the right person for the job.

We got time! 🤞🏼

Considering they don’t own Snapdragon, the rough history of local pro teams leaving, and SDSU leadership being quirky at times, do y’all think SDFC could eventually end up in some weird stadium/relocation drama down the line like Vancouver?

The 20-year lease with Snapdragon Stadium runs through 2044.

Some say that as long as Sycuan is involved, they don’t see the team relocating, but you never know. 🤷‍♂️
