Parting thoughts as I am officially leaving

I will not miss the late nights, the weekend emails requesting data, the meeting requests when I'm supposed to be on vacation, nor the "urgent" emails requesting extra work.

I will rejoice at not having to use my personal computer for work and not having to pay my own subscriptions for the software I need to do my job.

I will not miss the low pay, and the lack of respect even as a 30 year old because I'm "still a trainee" as a postdoc.

I will not miss the financial instability and low pay. I will not miss ruining my clothes in the lab. I will not miss dealing with egomaniacs and p-hackers.

Goodbye friends, may you also are able to leave soon.

Got to work with a famous lab, lost a little faith in science

A very famous lab reached out because a project of theirs needed extra expertise they didn't have. They exclusively publish in CNS (Cell, nature, science) and have a reputation of cutting edge papers. Sounds great right? I was excited.

Well its been a year and oh boy. What I saw is a lab that walks so close to the research misconduct line, its like they are experts at it. I've had to redo so many of their experiments because NONE OF THEIRS ARE REPEATABLE and they play coy about how they did them. I also learned that as long as a lab isn't actively fabricating data, its fair game! Nothing I can do about it.

Cherry picking data? All good.

Excluding data that is at odds with their hypothesis? We're just gonna pretend we didn't see that.

Making up assays and passing them off as if they were the standard assay in the text they send me? Well, when I did it in the standard assay it would not show the result I wanted (not shown or ever mentioned).

Anyone else has had this happen to them? I've been fortunate to work in good labs that were extremely ethical, so its been a sad shock.

Was considering switching to Toyota (bad idea)

Both the cars I've owned have been Subarus and I loved them both.

I wanted to upgrade my 10-year old Outback and was considering switching to Toyota due to a good manufacturer deal they had for one of their vehicles. I emailed the 5 closest Toyota dealerships, plus the two Subaru dealerships close-by just in case.

For the 5 Toyota dealerships:

  • Dealer #1: tried to pretend that the manufacturer offer did not exist, even when being sent the link directly.
  • Dealer #2: flat out refused to send me any info or negotiate through email, they needed to come in only.
  • Dealer #3: had no inventory until October, and they would not respect the offer since they didn't have a car.
  • Dealer #4: sent me a ridiculously overinflated number with no other info and refused to send me the info sheet for my review.
  • Dealer #5: took three days to call-back/answer email and at that point I had already bought a car.

ALL of them gave me the impression of either not being interested in my business or having the "take it or leave it" attitude.

In contrast, BOTH Subaru dealers contacted me immediately, sent me all the info sheets, answered all my questions and negotiated, all through email. I started this process on Monday morning and by Tuesday evening, I was signing the paperwork at the dealership, which at my request they had prepped already.

In total I spent less than 2 hours of time inside the dealership, including the test drive and my meticulous reading of the paperwork.

I don't think I'll ever switch from Subaru, even if I tried to haha

Subaru Impreza Sport 2026, MO, 10k miles a year, 1K due at signing - Sanity check

Hi all, this will be my first lease. I am getting this car for a very specific situation of having to commute a total of 12 miles only 3 times a week for night school, which is why I'm perfectly fine with 10k miles.

I'm trying to get a car I could see myself maybe buying at the end since I will vastly undershoot on the limited miles, while keeping the flexibility of walking away.

Car is a Subaru Impreza Sport 2026 with all weather package, moonroof, Blind-Spot Detection (BSD) and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA)

State: Missouri

Mileage: 10k miles a year

Due at signing: $1,000

MSRP: 30,460

Selling price: 27,654

Money Factor: 0.000390 -- comes out to ~0.936% APR

residual is 59%, includes gap coverage.

Monthly payment is $371.

Thanks for any feedback!

EDIT: adding the length -- 36 month lease

Rejected after final interview, but they suggested a different job in same org?

I went through a grueling 4 round interview process over 3 months for a 18 month rotational program at a company. For the final interview they interviewed 4 people for 2 spots.

A week after final interview I got a phone call from the hiring manager. He said they had not selected me for the program, but they were impressed with me and they wanted to know if I was interested in a different role they thought fit my skills better. This role is a normal job, so its not ending in 16 months and similar/better pay.

I of course said yes, and he said they would not make me redo all the interviews, just have to meet with the department supervisor as a last check and that this role is not posted for applications.

Is this common? Does this mean I am likely to get this other job? Don't want to get my hopes up too high after getting rejected from the program.

EDIT: this is for an entry-level post school job.

What's up with Ecuador's fans

Not mexican, but I lived in Chile for a few years so my algorithms still show latin american reels.

They clearly played awful yesterday, yet here are all the excuses I've seen them throw out:

  1. Mexicans are so rude and its the worst host nation because they didn't let the players sleep --- this happens all the time in south american football?? I also read Ecuador has done it to Mexico before.

  2. Mexico ruined their travel plans -- I dont even know what to do with this one, didn't know they controlled the weather or airports.

  3. The cartels broke into the stadium and threatened the ecuatorian players thats why they played bad -- ?????

  4. mexico refused to allow ecuatorians in the country --- Y'all have known you need visas to enter for a couple years now

  5. Mexico refused to give tickets to ecuatorian fans -- do they know FIFA started selling tickets over 6 months ago? They couldve paid the 2-3k they were selling for in resale, I wouldn't but its still an option. Were they expecting free tickets? Idk

It's crazy, you would never see Spain/Germany/France pulling out such ridiculous excuses after a loss. They usually blame themselves.

Considering leasing for the first time, need help!

Hi all, I think we might get a second car and I'm considering a lease.

This car would only be used to drive to/from school at night (10 min drive) a few times a week. Because of this, we would like an electric vehicle, no need to be fancy just reliable. I also don't care for aesthetics or have strong opinions on SUV versus sedan.

I have a 775 credit score. Which cars would be best for our situation? In my ideal world we'd put $0 down and pay around 300 a month - am I delulu?

Thanks for any input and advice on what cars to target!

Law School Debt?

Anyone else freaking out over the amount of money graduating will take?

When all is said and done, I will graduate with ~$50k in federal loans total and the thought is somewhat paralyzing. Repayment would be ~740 a month for TEN years and I will end up paying back almost 90k.
