Local 212

Alright, I just passed the aptitude test today and was told that I’ll receive a call after the first of the year for an interview. I’m curious about what I should prepare for the interview and what types of questions they typically ask. I want to be as well-prepared as possible because I completed the process for the UA last year and felt that I wasn’t prepared for the interview. Additionally, if you’re in 212, I’d love to know your thoughts on the program.

Thank you!

Aptitude test

I just think it’s kind of weird about the Local. I’m testing for it on Wednesday. They are providing calculators for us, which I’m not complaining about, but I think it’s kind of weird because all the other locals I’ve seen are very heavy on the no calculators and the test score because I’ve been studying for the last like five days, and most of the questions that I’ve been running into, at least from the Khan Academy they sent me, most of the questions can be answered on a calculator. The requirement is very low, only a three out of nine. And it’s really not like I’m in a slow area; multiple data centers are being built, a lot of upcoming projects, and a lot of steel mills that are needing constant maintenance and repairs. The Local covers parts of three states. Is this common for locals? Like I said, I’m not complaining. It’s just a little weird to me because a much smaller Local near me requires a higher test score and also only covers two counties next to each other.

Texas locals

I know all locals are competitive, but I’m just getting on here to ask how 142 and 100 are and how they act towards transfers because I plan on moving to one of the areas after I get a couple years into my apprenticeship, because from what I’ve seen if you wait until you’re a journeyman to try to transfer over it can take years to be able to transfer but transferring as a second or third year apprentice, you might lose some certs and need to get them back but I’ve also heard there’s a 50-50 chance you might have to restart your whole apprenticeship

Helper/pre-apprenticeship. How did you guys do it!

Repost because my last one was too cluttered together

Just looking for some insight from anyone who got hired as a pre-apprentice. How did you get your position?
I’ve asked around, including calling the hall and emailing the training director, but I either don’t get a response or I’m told it has nothing to do with the apprenticeship.

For some context, I placed 19th on the list in April. They ended up taking 23 HVAC apprentices, but only 16 came from the ranked list, which was pretty disappointing. After the next round I moved up to 3rd, and that’s when I started reaching out to the hall and emailing the training director to see if there was any way to get my foot in the door.

A union member my stepdad knows told me they had a metal tradesman at Johnson Controls who had been working there for over two years even though he hadn’t passed the aptitude test yet. That confused me because there are people like me on the ranked list who are ready to learn and work hard for an apprenticeship.

He also suggested I email my résumé to every union HVAC contractor, even if they weren’t hiring. I did that, but I haven’t heard anything back yet.

I’m completely fine waiting my turn if that’s what it takes. I’m just trying to get some experience, learn more about HVAC, understand how the union works, and hopefully get my foot in the door while I wait. If anyone got hired as a pre-apprentice or tradesman before starting the apprenticeship, I’d really appreciate hearing how it happened and what you did.

Realism artist in southwestern Ohio

Hi everyone, just asking what are the best artist in the Cincinnati/Dayton area that do good realism work the only one that I found so far that I actually think does really good work in the general area is Kyle Cotterman but I also want to explore my options and hear everybody’s recommendations because after I finish one of my arms, I’m planning on starting a leg piece.

Confused

Okay so my local just swore in 89 new apprentices the training director said they took 23 MES apprentices which is what I applied for but the thing that doesn’t make sense to me is I was ranked 19th on the list and now I’m ranked 3rd so they took 16 from the list I’m just wondering where the heck the other 7 came from I’m kinda getting discouraged here

Local 11

I just had some questions about the workload. Is there a lot of work right now and will there be in the next couple of years because I think I’m going to apply next June 2027 when the application window opens again but also I am ranked pretty high up on the list for the United Association for a HVAC apprenticeship and I know with HVAC, you wouldn’t really get laid off and have to wait for work and that would kind of be my main concern
