Looking for garage door company recommendations – Pickering / Durham Region
Hey everyone,
Looking for some first-hand recommendations for a reputable garage door company serving Pickering/Durham Region.
My existing garage door has reached the point where it probably makes more sense to do a complete overhaul rather than repair it again. The cable has snapped and the spring has also failed, and since we’re in the summer, I’m thinking this is probably the right time to replace everything properly.
I’m looking at potentially doing:
New garage door
New tracks/rollers/hardware as required
New spring/cable setup
New garage door opener/operator — replacing an older Stanley unit
Preferably a modern opener with Wi-Fi/app control and reliable open/closed status notifications; camera would be nice but isn’t essential
Replacement/repair of the exterior wood trim/frame around the garage opening
Proper weather sealing around the new door
I’m not necessarily looking to replace every piece just for the sake of replacing it — if the existing track/frame or other components are still good and compatible, I’m happy to reuse them. I’d like someone who will actually assess everything and recommend what makes sense.
More interested in quality workmanship, good hardware, proper installation and after-sales support than simply finding the cheapest quote.
If you’ve had a garage door replaced recently in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby or elsewhere in Durham, who did you use and how was your experience?
Also interested in hearing which door and opener brands you’d recommend — or avoid.
Thanks!
Anyone in Pickering suddenly dealing with cluster flies?
We’ve lived in our house since 2018 and have never had an issue with them before.
About two weeks ago, around the time we were getting the wildfire smoke, we noticed a few larger/slower flies in the house. They disappeared for a while, but over the past few days they’ve suddenly started showing up again, mainly in one upstairs bedroom.
Our neighbour has also experienced something similar — flies appeared in their living room/basement around the same time, disappeared, and then started showing up again recently.
Just curious if anyone else in Pickering or the surrounding Durham area has noticed an unusual number of cluster flies lately.
Not necessarily suggesting the wildfire caused it — the timing is just interesting.
Happy 1st Birthday
My little one,
I wish so many beautiful things for you in life. Most importantly, I wish that you are always surrounded by love—now and forever.
You are so wonderful, and the joy you have brought to me and to so many others around the world speaks volumes about just how special you are.
Sending you all my love, always. ❤️
Complete beginner looking for golf lessons and practice recommendations in Pickering/Durham
Hi everyone,
I’m located in Pickering and am thinking about learning to golf, I have essentially no experience.
My goal is to learn properly so I can eventually play socially, participate in work or client golf outings, and enjoy the game without slowing down the group.
My tentative plan is to take two to four introductory lessons with a golf professional, practise between lessons at a driving range or simulator, and then get fitted for clubs once I have developed a basic and somewhat repeatable swing.
I’d appreciate recommendations for:
- An instructor in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby or Oshawa who is particularly good with complete beginners
- Private lessons versus beginner group clinics
- Facilities that provide or rent clubs during the first few sessions
- Good outdoor ranges and indoor simulators for practising
- When a beginner should get fitted and where to go
- Beginner-friendly par-3, executive or nine-hole courses for a first real round
I’m willing to travel throughout Durham Region for the right instructor or facility.
Thanks in advance!
INQUIRY: Tune Recommendation - 2016 Dodge Ram EcoDiesel
Hi all,
I’m currently at 284,310 km on my EcoDiesel and I’m trying to decide the best path forward to keep the truck alive and reliable for another 100,000+ km if possible.
I’m fairly consistent with maintenance and repairs when needed, but since taking ownership, I’ve spent a lot of money keeping this truck going. At this point, especially being in Ontario, Canada, the resale value is not really strong enough for me to justify selling it, so my mindset is more: keep it running properly and make smart decisions from here.
This is my daily driver. Most weekdays I put on 100+ km per day, and I also do cottage drives on some weekends, usually 300+ km. I do not tow and do not really plan to.
I recently spoke with GDE and the recommendation I received was:
- Flash Tool
- No vehicle changes
- No EcoDiesel engine tuning options
- Transmission tuning
- Ram trans tune option: Stock / ERS
I was also told I could leave the stock intake manifold but remove the swirls.
I’ve also been looking at MR Tuning, and based on my understanding, the possible direction there would be:
- Stage 1
- Optional DEF delete
- Transmission Stage 1
I’m looking for feedback from owners who have been down this road, especially higher-mileage EcoDiesels.
For a daily-driven truck at this mileage, what would you recommend for reliability and longevity?
Specific questions:
- Is the GDE transmission tune worthwhile on its own?
- Is MR Tuning Stage 1 a good idea at this mileage?
- Would you remove the swirls while keeping the stock intake manifold?
- Are there any options you would avoid on a high-mileage truck?
- What maintenance items should I prioritize before considering any tune?
- For those who deleted or stayed emissions-intact, what would you do again or not do again?
I’m not chasing power. My main goal is reliability, drivability, efficiency, and keeping the truck alive as long as reasonably possible.
Also, if any community members from Ontario, I would love a mechanic recommendation who is knowledgeable on EcoDiesels, repairs, maintenance, mods, tuning, etc.
Appreciate any real-world feedback.

Thinking about getting a DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro — looking for real-world advice from current owners.
Hi Everyone,
Hope you all are doing well.
For context, I’m not a hardcore action sports guy or content creator. I’m more looking for an easy “life capture” camera for:
- parks/playgrounds with the kids
- cottage trips
- beaches/lakes
- Thailand/Japan travel
- walking around
- POV/family moments
- quick clips/photos while on the move
What’s attracting me is:
- waterproofing
- stabilization
- portability
- ability to clip it to a backpack/chest/hat
- easy grab-and-record convenience
- ability to extract stills from video if needed
I originally started looking at Fuji/Nikon mirrorless cameras, but realized I may actually value convenience and spontaneity more for this stage of life.
A few questions for current users:
- Is the Action 5 Pro actually good enough for family/travel photography and casual videos?
- Would you recommend the Standard or Adventure Combo?
- Which accessories ended up being genuinely useful vs wasted money?
- Any must-have mounts for family/travel use?
- How is low-light performance realistically at parks/restaurants/night markets/etc?
- Any regrets going DJI over GoPro?
- Do you still use it regularly months later, or did the novelty wear off?
Appreciate any insight from real-world users before I jump in 🙏
Looking for a solid mechanic in the Pickering / Ajax area for my 2016 Dodge Ram.
Mainly looking for:
- Honest diagnostics
- Good communication
- Someone who actually knows modern Dodge/Ram trucks well
- Fair pricing (not necessarily the cheapest)
- Preferably a shop that doesn’t just throw parts at problems
I’m okay paying for quality work if the mechanic is trustworthy and thorough.
Would appreciate feedback from the community on:
- Shops you personally use
- Mechanics to avoid
- Experiences with diesel/truck work
- Places good for long-term maintenance vs just quick repairs
Thanks in advance.
Hey everyone,
I’m looking to source 100% grass-fed / grass-finished beef tallow from a local farm (Durham Region or nearby) — ideally something farm-direct or small-batch, not commercial/retail brands.
If anyone has a go-to farm or supplier they’d recommend, I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks 🙏
