Update on a story I cross posted on this sub, as well as a question for knowledge so I'm less ignorant about wasps.

So, yesterday I had a wasp in this house. I am allergic to their stings and I was ignorant to the truth about wasps so I feared them.

I just want to say, I went down a rabbit hole of research overnight and this sub in particular has honestly made me start to appreciate wasps more than I ever thought I would. In fact I actually have grown to love them? They're such beneficial lol creatures and I can't believe how hated they are only because they don't produce honey and are "aggressive" (defensive of their nests, which who wouldn't be?) and it's not fair that bees are loved for their honey which isn't a necessity for us to survive it's just something to profit off of and since wasps don't produce the same honey they're hated.

I was wrong about wasps. The wasp in my house was a mud dabber and it just... Disappeared. It probably found itself a way back outside (hopefully) and I hope it lives its best lil wasp life.

Please, can y'all teach me everything you know about wasps so I can appreciate them some more?

Fuck. Wasps. Holy. Shit.

There's a wasp in our fucking house and no one knows where it is and I'm in my room and it's so fucking hot cuz we don't have central air or other stuff like that & I'm worried about myself and my pet snake and I don't want to open my door until the stupid thing is confirmed dead and I'm having a panic attack over a damn wasp... I will stay in my room for weeks if I have to tho I don't want to be near that thing. The shop vac is broken. No one wants to use spray inside the house. I'm very much too much of a pussy to do jack shit about it myself. Currently it's 92°F in my room. Hahaha. Fuck this wasp.

Any advice on how the fuck someone brave enough to do it can kill this stupid thing?

Update 1: no one can find the stupid thing now. They say it's gone. That's a bad sign tho in my eyes. Could mean there's a wasp nest in the walls or ceiling and it came from a hole somewhere. Instead of accidentally being let in when someone walked in or out of the house. And if that's the case we're too poor for hiring a company to come inspect the house and do something about it. We can hardly afford electricity and water and groceries day to day. So at that point I will probably ask a friend if I can stay at their house until the wasp is dead and none more have been found.

EDIT 1: if it matters we live in Kansas City Missouri- no other location stuff I will share for privacy reasons.

Edit 2: if we did try to get a company out we have no means to pay - shit credit, no loans we can get, etc.

Edit 3: I AM ALLERGIC TO WASPS .... And I don't feel the need to get hospitalized rn cuz a wasp decided to sit in our damn house. I'M NOT A COWARD TO THOSE WHO COMMENTED THAT WTF????

UPDATE 2: My stepdad at least got me some repellent but I can't use it in my room because I do have a tarantula, cockroaches, snakes, and toads. So I have sprayed it away from my room but on one side of the house that goes to my room so hopefully the repellent works and it keeps it on the opposite side of the house to my room.

My door is also at least open and there's airflow from a couple box fans as per usual so it's not as hot and stuffy now! This is an old military house without any ventilation system other than for the furnace which is around 70 years old now. There's also no central air or any sort not even any attic fans or anything. Insulation is from 80 years ago too. This house generally is a fucking nightmare because it's so old and nothing has been replaced or updated in the last 70-80 years other than the breaker box (it was out of date fuses beforehand & ungrounded completely). Anyways, this post isn't about the house. Just wanted to bring this up because with the age of the house as well as how much it's falling apart, it really wouldn't be hard to believe that there could be a wasp nest in the ceiling or walls tho we've been knocking around and then listening for any buzzing as well as looking for any soft spots with any peculiar smells and so far there's no evidence of wasps in the house except for that singular individual. So that fear has so far been put to rest. Now I'm just scared of that one individual wasp.

Just feeding my colony of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, Dubia roaches, and other inverts a whole entire banana

They're all happy and fat, to say the least!

Btw, this is a shared colony tank — it's also where I breed isopods, springtails, earthworms, etc. There's a common lined snake in there too, keeping the earthworm population in check since they were WAY overpopulating before. They're still overpopulated, honestly, but at least it's more stable now.

Everyone's peaceful. The lined snake is fat and happy, can easily get away from the roaches, and has plenty of humid hides. It even eats a nymph here and there from what I've seen.

This is genuinely a balanced ecosystem enclosure. I started this project years ago — honestly lost count at this point — and it's been a real passion project. My original question was: given the right resources, could MHCs and Dubias adapt to a local Midwest forest floor environment? Obviously winter would wipe them out, so that's outside the scope of the experiment, but I wanted to see if, given the chance, they'd settle in and become just another part of the ecosystem. So far, they have — everyone's thriving.

I think it's an interesting experiment because it raises the question: given enough time to adapt to Midwest conditions, what insects could potentially invade this region? Maybe quiet invasions are already happening and we just haven't noticed yet.

For me it's a small-scale, short-term case study in adaptation — watching native Midwest species and two total outsiders (MHCs and Dubias, from completely different parts of the world) balance out and coexist in one tiny ecosystem.

In the tank: millipedes, snails, isopods, springtails, earthworms, soil centipedes, slugs, the roaches, and the lined snake. It all just works together beautifully. :)

I love sitting up all night watching them — the tank's at the foot of my bed, and observing how the whole thing self-adjusts feels like watching a nature documentary in my own room. I really love this 20-gallon setup.

Wanted to share this project and see what people think. I know some parts might be controversial, but my goal has always been to replicate a Midwest spring/summer environment — every soil creature included — then introduce the roaches and watch how things adapt. If I ever saw genuine harm happening to any animal, I'd dismantle it and separate everyone immediately. So far, though, everything just works. As nature intended.

Just wanted to share my gorgeous girl, Princess Carlos, my Nicrauguan Curly Hair Tarantula!

She's not the most photogenic sometimes but I try. I also NEVER EVER HOLD HER- for her own safety mostly yes, but also because she acts more like an Orange Bitey Thing than a curly hair... (She's bitten me 3 times since I got her but never ever flung hairs at me...)

Just wanted to post FAT BABBY splooting

He does this all the time it's so cute. He just turns into a pancake when he is completely relaxed. I don't understand how it could be comfortable on my thumb like that though but I guess he must be.

Hypnotoad is doing well and growing well in captivity.

Got these good pics of my rescue American toad, Hypnotoad!

(I've posted about him before, my stepdad rescued him from a park one August day in 2025 where he saw multiple dead toads dried up on the sidewalk and couldn't leave Hypnotoad there to die. Nature is nature sure but it was a sidewalk at a park in the middle of a bigger city. We both already knew how to care for American toads so don't worry!)

He also prefers his substrate swampy! :)

Just wanted to post some pics of my new Borneo boy!

I got him recently but he's already a handleable and well socialized individual! He's eating well too for me even deep in blue as he is. He's about 8 months old. RBP coloration. He's been in blue since I got him though so unfortunately I haven't gotten really good pics of those reds!

His name is FAT BABBY. He's a sweet boy already.
