Social aspect of STP

This feels like a silly question but has anyone made friends doing the STP?

I would be moving to the manchester area for the program from Ireland, my partner couldn’t join me for the first year so I’d be alone.

Since there’s are limited placements in each location, do people find it isolating at all or is there opportunity to meet people? I don’t necessarily mean other young people, but just friends in general

Just worried that I’d love the program but end up feeling really alone for 3 years

first time fail :(

automatic test, in a car i’ve only driven twice (instructor rental, my car broken down waiting on a mechanic to fix it) the tester said 2 grade 3s were for the same mini roundabout. I’m worried by the amount of faults gathered before my maneouvers were even done, on a drive that felt like my best effort.

I had a phobia of driving for years, got over it (by switching to auto) but my nerves showed in the observations i think

I’m looking for advice on road position in small busy town roads where the markings are entirely faded or rubbed away? A lot of the marks were for being in “the wrong lane” but there were no lane marking or anything on the roads, yield lines rubbed away, only the flat circle for the mini roundabout. Also very limited space to be on the left, as in i’d be too close to parked cars if forced myself into the correct position. Also speed limit signs are extremely hard to come by, so I was driving 50 in a road that had changed to 60 briefly without a sign change (only Waze revealed it on the carplay)

anyone else who did test outside of dublin have problems with this?

I almost prefer driving in the dublin because the roads are maintained, speed bumps have markings, junctions are laid out better with clear lane markings lmao any encouragement appreciated

What would you do?

Say you were in your early twenties, first year in a full time (low paying) job after graduation. No debt, living with parents so no rent to pay etc only minor bills.

What would you do with the money? use it all on travel? save or invest?

Going from part time paycheck of €100 a week to full time salary is making me curious what people would’ve done if they could go back to their first year of proper work

Red/orange tones in brunette help!!

I’m at my wits end with my hair

I’m a natural cool brown level 6/7, and I unfortunately have spent the last 2 years trying to get my natural colour back after some box dying (darker shades of brown etc, no bleaching). My hair is coarse and dense, so is resilient to dye but also requires a lot of product.

It seems the box dying/developer has lifted my natural colour from my hair, which is fine. But I’ve tried green shampoos, blue shampoos, blue colour masks, cool toners, EVERYTHING to get my hair to be a cool toned brown and not a reddy maroon/orange mess.

The fixes usually last 3 washes (no sulfate conditioner cold water yadayada) and even the professional toners and salon products have completely faded by then back to very red brown.

I understand that brown has to have some warm reds etc, but has anyone found a cool brown dye/technique that LASTS for more than 30 minutes???

I fear the more fixed I try, the more damaged my hair is gonna get, i’m even thinking about Henna dyes for something more permanent

If anyone shares this experience please advise !!

Typical workday of a clinical scientist

Hi all,
I’m thinking of applying to the STP next year, but trying to do some diligence on whether the career is for me, on top of recognizing that it is very competitive to get into.

I have genomics experience, so that’s what I’d be going for. What I’m wondering is:

is the job usually on site all time? or is there opportunity for hybrid work?

Do you actively do lab work still, or is it more project management of a lab team kind of thing?

do you work shifts, or Monday-Friday?

I understand this would vary by specialty, but just wondering if anyone currently in the program doing rotations or a current clinical scientist could weigh in

Thanks!

Entry from ROI

I know the rounds for this year are coming to an end, so congrats to everyone! I'll be attempting an application next year however:

I am an Irish citizen, and while the NHS does accept international applicants, there is a UK ENIC requirement to verify the degree is up to UK standards.

But: the UK and Ireland are under a Common Travel Area agreement, giving me to right to travel and work freely in the UK without need for a permit or visa. We also get Home fees in all UK universities, aka treated as if we are UK citizens. I have a Bachelors of Science (Hons) from an Irish university.

If anyone from the ROI has ever applied, did you still need to get the ENIC for your degree to be accepted?

Eurofins Biomnis Dublin

Anyone know when Eurofins Dublin usually hire, or is spread throughout the year. Heard their good for entry level to get experience, but have only seen jobs advertised in their Dungarvan location

cold emailing

this is more of a curiosity thing, has anyone ever got anywhere by cold emailing/contacting pharma companies in ireland for jobs?

I’m mainly referring to smaller companies/sites, I have no direct GMP experience and not in a position to do a masters right now so the market is soul sucking.
have plenty of biological lab experience, cell culture, aseptic, micro, some organic chemistry but in a research setting

i’m curious if that era has passed where cold emailing companies actually ever got anyone in the door, even say an interview for operator positions

attached a pictures of my natural cool toned roots (not sure what level they are) and my ends currently in daylight. I had several different brown toned dyes in my ends, which i stripped out with remover and toned with a simple brown toner (non permanent)

the red tones i think are mainly coming from the toner, but also from slight lifting from previous colours (the developers, i’ve never fully bleached)

i know i probably won’t match my roots completely, but does anyone know how to go about getting rid of the strong red and oranges and maintaining more cool brown ends?

my hair is naturally very coarse and resilient, but i always try avoid excessive chemical damage if I can

If anyone has ever imported just one personal car from Japan, do shipping agents usually email before arrival to Dublin? I have a customs agent, and they've requested I forward on any communications from the shipping people ASAP to them (i'm assuming they need to know exactly when its arriving for paperwork reasons). The estimated date I got was May 11th, but it could be delayed (ship is tracking at west African ports at the moment) so does anyone know if I should expect an email soon?

Bought from t-cv, just worried the ship won't let us know in advance of its arrival as we've heard nothing from the shipping agent themselves, only the sellers (who were great!)
