Hand placement on the wheel

Hi I just wanted to ask for anyone that done their test before, has any of ye drove one handed? Right hand at 12oclock but do the turning with both hands and did ye get marked for it or is it okay as long as you have good control.

How long does it take to get the license after approval

Hi,

I had applied for my full license 2 hours after passing the test, and then got an email from NDLS that my application was approved after 7 days, last Tuesday. How long does it usually take to get the license after approval ?

I'll be changing my address soon next month, so I was wondering if I'll receive my license on this address before changing my accommodation or do I need to inform NDLS about my address change from next month ? How to deal with this situation ?

Own Car VS Instructors Car

I have failed two tests already, one with a few extra grade 2s for stupid mistakes and the other for a complete disaster, trusted an indicator at a roundabout and literally forgot how to drive.

The nerves get me in this situation, all pre tests are done in my own car with a very picky retired tester and all are spot on driving wise.

The thing is the car I am using for the tests is a Sportage so a fairly big car.

Would it be worth getting a few lessons in a smaller car and hiring it out for the test ? Just thinking "I can do this in a bigger car" , might take some of the nerves away ?

Anyone done and failed in their own yoke decided to hire for subsequent tests? Or is the money better spent doing them in my own car with current instructor?

Driving license application stalled for 55 days (and counting)

Passed test in march, applied immediately. Application has been stuck in ‘processing’ for weeks, called and emailed SEVERAL times, default response (“it’s in process, we’ll leave a note on the app”) every time.

Only this last rep I called two days ago was able to tell me what was happening, apparently someone’s gone and assigned my certificate of comp. to another driver! They (NDLS) said it’s RSA that needs to fix, and to give it a few hours or a day. Lol.

Whole process is so opaque, no office to visit, nothing to do but wait for this to play out? I can’t even be mad because it’s not productive. Just a bitter taste in my mouth.

12 lessons and 5 pretests, two attempts, €1400 spent, waited almost a year for test, and this is what I get.

Do I just wait??

I’ve been waiting for 2 months for a test atm and I am thinking of getting a cancellation app,
Is it worth it at this stage or do I just wait it out??

Changing the instructor in Irish School of Motoring

Not exactly post about the driving test, but still...

I've been taking manual transmission EDT lessons in ISM in Finglas area (have done 5 hours previously but postponed the lessons because of college exams) and everything has been going more or less okay, but my instructor isn't the best fit for me is not someone I'd like to continue taking lessons with, particularly because:

  1. During my 2nd lesson when I was really struggling with my clutch (the car stalled 7-9 times in total), she said (not even halfway into the 2-hour lesson) that (quote) "she will ban me from her car if I fail the clutch [and the car stalls] one more time". Miraculously, for the rest of the lesson that didn't happen, but the attitude is not the one I would expect from an instructor that teaches a person that has barely driven before;
  2. Another time (it was 4th or 5th lesson) I missed a turn for the 2nd time during the lesson and she started to scold me for "not listening to her at all", to which I said that I was but just misinterpreted her instructions, and she raised her voice to almost the point of screaming and just recited her initial claim; I decided to say nothing because it could've resulted in even bigger wave of giving-out (and possibly actual screaming) - it was exam prep week plus I was working part-time so dealing with instructor's tantrums and changing her for another instructor wasn't something I wanted on my agenda, so I kinda let it happen;
  3. About a week ago I scheduled the first lesson with her after my college exams, but minutes before the lesson she sends me the video which showed that her key snapped and she wouldn't be able to drive that day. The day after, she texts me that she fixed it but wouldn't be able to put me in for a lesson until this week because she was fully booked out;
  4. Just after (3) happened we arranged the lesson to happen today at 12pm, so I texted her 40 minutes before it began and asked if she could drop me off somewhere different from my home address (she didn't see the message). At 12 sharp I'm waiting for her in front of the house and call her (she doesn't pick up). Then 5 minutes later, she calls me and says that she double booked my time slot (even though I let her know about this lesson before the other guy) and wouldn't be able to do a lesson (you will never guess) until next week.

You might say that (3) and (4) might happen to anybody, and I would agree more than disagree with that, so let's leave only the first 2 points in the scope of the discussion.

So with the points above,

  1. Would I be allowed to change the instructor (and transfer the remaining lessons) without any surcharge or would I have to finish all 12 lessons with her?

  2. Also is it possible to just change the instructor - say, due to personal preference - or would I have to tell them the specific reason? (tbf if possible I would opt for the first option because jeez I already have enough drama in my life and I'm afraid that explaining myself to the ISM might be long and gruesome process)

I'm not a native dweller in Ireland (as my nickname suggests), and I'm still trying to get my head around all the stuff that I need to get a license and driving in Ireland, so if you have any other useful tips re license/test/driving in general I would be more than grateful for any of them🙏

Failed my first time doing a test in Mulhuddart.

Well i got my first test done today but unfortunately I failed..

Tester said my driving was good enough & i was confident on the road , slight issue with the turning right , had to do more observations to the left aswell whilst turning right.

As for the reversing part. I got too close to the kerb & hit of it :( i think my nerves got the best of me during this part.

I guess it just wasn't my time to pass my test yet but definitely for sure on the re-test I will pass it next time!

Car issues right before test

Ive a driving test tomorrow morning which I was extremely excited to finally do as I feel confident and ready and sure in my ability, but my car since being bought has an issue where even when the passenger is strapped in, the seatbelt isn’t detected and the chime goes off on my dash, I’m extremely frustrated because I know things like this get tests cancelled, I’ve had it at the mechanics and they said there’s nothing they can do for me, I feel so defeated it’s like I’ve failed before even getting a chance and I don’t know what to do.
The car was approved by the mechanic saying that the belt isn’t faulty and the airbags and seatbelt still would work as needed in the driving test it’s just that the sensor is worn and doesn’t fully detect the belt.
I don’t know what to do, I feel so sad because I just really wanted to do this and have mentally prepared but I can’t even stress about the test because all I’m thinking about it the seatbelt

C1 Passed on first attempt

Accidentally changed to 3rd gear instead of 5th on the national road. Thought that it was an instant failure so drove without worrying for the rest of the test. The tester didn't even mark it.

Passed my Irish driving test today 🎉 Dun Laoghaire

Applied in October, got invite this month, passed today on 1st attempt 😊
Was super nervous but the examiner was genuinely calm and supportive which made a huge difference.
Finally done with L plates 🚗

Thanks to everyone here for the tips, they genuinely helped

I built a simple RSA mock driving test scoresheet tool to track faults during practice

Hi all,

I’ve been helping my wife practice for her driving test by doing mock runs, but I kept struggling to track all the faults properly while also focusing on the drive (especially without a printed RSA scoresheet).

So I made a simple browser page that mimics the scoresheet so I could tap in Grade 1/2/3 faults during practice and keep count properly.

If it helps anyone, here it is:
https://mocktests.app

Edit: Got an Irish domain as well

https://mocktests.ie

Will update branding in the app later, along with timestamps.

Failed 2nd time in Dun Laoghaire

Feeling absolutely devastated and heartbroken. Waited for over 8 months to do my retest, did a mock test in the morning and got one Grade 2 for road markings. The instructor was confident, I was confident. Walked into the test centre, nervous but manageable, was greeted by the nicest most friendly and supportive tester, I was convinced I’d pass. Start the test, everything going great. I do my turnabouts, backing ups, hill starts and what not, then it’s almost the end of the test and as we’re leaving the estate I’m convinced I ran a stop sign. Spoiler alert: I didn’t. But that thought sends me spiralling and I start making all the stupid mistakes. I start coasting with my clutch down, I forget my observations and I fail on a roundabout for not looking into my right mirror and doing a “racer’s curve”.

I was devastated, the tester was devastated. He said I drove perfectly and my observations were textbook perfect, my turnabout and my backing up were done perfectly and so on, and it was that non-existent stop sign that ruined everything for me.

I’ll try to book a cancellation ASAP (past the 15 day cooling down period) and then hopefully get this sorted, because I don’t want to wait for 8 more months paying insurance on a car that I can’t drive lol

My advice to everyone - stay calm. If you make a mistake - you have 7 more chances to make one. Don’t be me. Good luck! ❤️

Bookings in Drogheda

How many people have actually managed to get a booking in Drogheda? I got an invitation to book my test and want to do it in Drogheda as Dundalk is pretty far for me, but there is no availability. Anyone know if they're operating with less capacity because they're only up and running?

Finally finished with my driving test journey.

i’ve been a long time lurker here and seeing people’s journey as well as encouragement from everyone has really made an impact on myself so i wanted to share this post.

almost 5 years of journey and it finally paid off! i passed my theory test in October 2021, finished my EDT lessons in August 2023, and since then i’ve had countless hours spent practicing, renewed my learner’s permit twice, booked multiple pretest lessons with different instructors, and 3 failed exams before i finally passed yesterday in Tallaght! looking back on my very first test, it was such a stark comparison from when i first sat my driving test (from 37 grade 2s to just 3 on my last test).

i was so close to giving up too but i think it really goes to show that if you put in the hours, have amazing sponsors/teachers, and have a little bit of luck with your instructor on the day, you’d also be able to pass.

one thing i have to say though was the nerves never went away and it kept me tense & alert all throughout my driving test yesterday. i’m not saying you should follow my footsteps but i think it really did help me in my situation. i hope everyone who’s still on the journey would see this and realise if someone as awful as me could pass then there’s definitely hope for everyone!

Failed 2nd time rosscomon

For anyone that knows ross, got the fella the first time very close then got the woman the second time and she was fair strict gave me the grade 3 for taking too many turns in my turn about. The one with less marks is my first test and the one with mire is the test i done today. Today felt like one of my best drives ive ever done and to be met with them sort of marks is horrible any tips
