I can’t afford any car on DoneDeal or facebook marketplace.

I have been looking for a decent automatic petrol car with a budget of €6000 for over 5 months now and haven’t found anything. for example toyota yaris, vitz , nissan , mazda, nothing fancy.

Any car I like it is at least overpriced by €2000, they are simply not worth that price.

Like why are people selling their car the same price as car dealers? Make it make sense, it’s not like they provide warranty or anything.

Accidentally booked a test tomorrow

The title is as dumb as it sounds but basically I’m under a lot of stress with Leaving Cert results tomorrow, and when applying for my re-test today, I thought it just said “join waiting list.” It in fact did not, and I got a booking confirmation for tomorrow. I cannot reschedule and I can’t cancel without losing my fee.

Is there anything I can do to not lose my fee and somehow get a refund?

Advice on shifting

I recently completed all 12 lessons and have been practicing driving although not a lot in several manual cars including my own, I’m still very uncomfortable downshifting so I tend to stick to lower speeds to avoid changing gears which will get me a mark on the driving test. I fear it’s too late to switch to auto as I recently purchased a manual car. Did anyone else feel like this in the beginning and still pass their test and or have any advice on how to get more comfortable?

Stalling constantly 🙈

I've been driving since October and i'm not insured on my family car. I've only done 19 hours of driving and my test is next week. I am overall quite a good driver, I make mistakes here and there but i'm proud of the progress i've made over the last few months whilst i juggle commuting and college etc.

My one problem seems to be that i cannot stop stalling the car. I often go 2-3 weeks without a lesson so i think it's down to a lack of practice but i'm genuinely struggling...

My instructor taught me to find the bite and then add gas when releasing from the bite. His car is a petrol. Should i be adding/ setting the gas before i even reach the bite? I just find that i am genuinely taking my time with my feet and releasing the clutch slowly but maybe im not matching that to enough revs? My instructor says im going too fast with my feet but i really feel like im taking my time.

This is making me extremely anxious for my test because im worried I'll fail from stalling too many times.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Picture on drivers license

Hi, this post is going to sound very shallow lol, but I need to ask.

When I first signed up for my learners permit, and I made a GovID account, I didn't realise that the photo verification for GovID would be what's used on my public service card and drivers license, so I took a really shitty picture of myself for it (seriously, I look awful.) I got my PSC with that picture and when I realised it would be used for my license, I went in person to NDLS and took a much nicer picture for my license and that was fine.

Now my license has expired, and I'm wondering, if I renew it online will they use the original GovID picture? Or the one I went and got taken in person? Or can I renew my license in person to get a better picture?

Thank you 🙏

Second time pass in Tallaght

Both time testers were just lovely!!! Failed first time a year ago as hit curb pretty bad in turnabout- really practised manoeuvres this time. Thank god as emigrating in 2 weeks so like non stop prepared over summer. Lmk any questions truly had a great experience both times.

First time pass in Ennis :)

Had a 9:15 slot this morning. I was so unbelievably nervous, I nearly got sick before the test 😳 Didn't think I'd be THAT anxious at all. It's over anyways!

Where I picked up my grade 2s:
My turnabout was in Cahercalla and I had only practiced that spot for the first time this morning in my pretest, was awfully tight so I slightly slightly tipped off the curb going back which made me nervous again. Could have avoided with more observation over my shoulders. Then I stalled pulling away after completing it, again due to the nerves.

Other grade 2 was at turnpike roundabout, didn't put the clutch in soon enough so I stalled... I haven't stalled the car in WEEKS until today hahaha. But what saved me is I recovered properly and calmly.

Not 100% sure what the left turn grade 2 is but sure look.

Everything else I'm happy with, hill start was also in Cahercalla and left reverse on the showgrounds road. Took me basically on the exact route I did for my pretest with my instructor before it. Didn't do the dual carriageway, maybe because he could sense the nerves!

Tester wasn't chatty throughout the test but really lovely. He understood I knew where I went wrong and that it was down to my nerves. Thank god that's over with!!!

Stalling during test, do I move to automatic?

Hi, in lessons and in practice I’m a pretty good driver. I’ve done a few pretests, have passed all of them and get a decent bit of practice driving around in my own car day to day. My issue is test anxiety. I’ve sat 2 tests and in both of them I have had major issues with stalling the car. I sat my first test in my instructors car which I had never stalled before and I couldn’t complete the full test as every time I tried to start off (including on flat surfaces) I stalled. The tester actually thought there was an issue with the automatic handbrake due to how bad it was. I drove home from that test in my own car with no issues. I continuously drove for a few months before my second test. I sat my second test last week (but instead in my own car) and the exact same thing happened. Every time I had to start the car I stalled a minimum of 4 or 5 times. Since then I’ve started getting very nervous starting and stopping while out driving day to day. I’m not sure what to do. My instructor was shocked both times I failed and said he has never seen anything like it.

Should I give up and move to automatic? Any advice?

Manual or Automatic?

Hey everyone! I'm at a bit of a loss here and I'd love if I could get a bit of advice.

I finished my tenth lesson in a manual car yesterday and my driving instructor told me that while I'm able to drive my clutch etc isn't up to snuff... Unfortunately he's not wrong. I don't have anyone or a car to practice in which is absolutely the root of my issue.

I have two options: keep going manual and take as many lessons as I need (potentially a lot, and my instructor seems to be getting fed up with me) or bite the bullet and go on with an automatic license.

Other people who had a similar affair: how did it work out for you? Did you get an automatic license and then go back to get a manual? Was it a hassle? Do you find an automatic license causes problems for you?

Thank you in advance!

Provisional Licence Insurance for 31yo Male ?

I am 31 and currently hold a provisional licence.

*For the record I have all EDT lessons and failed the driving test once in Finglas (1 grade 3 for reverse around the corner).*

I was hoping to find some sort of provisional licence insurance as I do not have any immediate family members where I could be put as a named driver on someone else's policy.

I have a car there waiting (A 1.5 Diesel 2019 Renault Kadjar) and I live in (very) Rural Ireland where crime rates / insurance claims are non existent.

So based on this can anyone recommend the best company or compare website for provisional licence insurance?

Any advice appreciated.

First time fail in Naas

So I failed my test in naas yesterday and I’m heartbroken. Ran 2 red lights cause the nerves were getting to me. I didn’t incur any other faults though so would extra lessons be necessary or should I just practice driving in naas more?

Failed my driving test for the 4th time

Honestly, I don't know what happened. That was my 4th attempt, and by far my worst result.

My first 3 attempts were all at the Tallaght test center, where I was very close to passing all the three times (in my opinion)

On my first attempt, I had an issue with the clutch and failed with 9 grade 2 marks. On my second attempt, I received 11 grade 2 marks, with observation being one of the main areas where I lost marks.

On my 3rd attempt, I got 8 grade 2 marks and 1 grade 3 mark. Again related to observation

Since then, I became almost obsessed with improving my observation. I worked really hard on it, and my driving instructor was pretty confident that I was ready to pass, although of course there was never any guarantee

So I finished my fourth test and was told that I had received 20 grade 2 marks, I was devastated... I genuinely couldn't understand how it had happened. I felt like the examiner considered myself like a dangerous driver (that was maybe a little bit dramatic)

My driving instructor was also surprised by the result, and he was shocked how I ended up with 20 grade 2 marks

I'm going to try again soon, attached is the screenshot so you can have a look and get your own conclusions

US License switch to Irish License. Have dual US-IE citizenship.

I am wondering if anyone has experience in this transition and might know some loopholes.

I have CA drivers license, I have residency in Sweden, and I will be moving to Ireland in the next year or two for the foreseeable future.

I have seen from others on here that EU states have reciprocal agreements with certain US states. Which potentially is an option. Example, switching my CA license to Virginia and then swapping it for a German license (i have close friends in both VA and DE). But I have seen explicitly that Swapping a second time (Germany -> Ireland) would not be possible.

Does anyone have experience with this? Or know of maybe some other possible swap situations that would work?

I have also been advised to just go to Romania. Any tips on that?

Driving test insurance question

When going for your driving test, do you need to have your insurance policy printed out or can you show them the email/policy screenshots?
