Title: How do I completely let go of a friendship when the things they said still hurt?
I’m struggling to completely let go of a friendship that ended after many years. We were very close, and even though the situation doesn’t hurt nearly as much as it used to, certain things she said and did still bother me.
During the conflict, she told me that I wasn’t a “girl’s girl” and that I didn’t have self-worth. Those comments really stuck with me because they felt like attacks on who I am as a person, not just criticism of something I did.
There was also a situation involving other people where she told me she had stopped following/contacting them, and later I discovered that she was still connected to them on social media. That made me feel betrayed because I believed what she told me.
What makes it harder is that she still follows and interacts with some of these people, while she hasn’t made any effort to contact me. We’ve now gone almost a year without talking. I recently made myself reachable again, but I’m not planning to chase her or send another message. If she wants to communicate, I feel like the next step should come from her.
I think what I’m struggling with most is the feeling that she got to walk away and leave me carrying all the hurt, while I’m still questioning the things she said about me.
I don’t necessarily want the friendship back anymore. I think I mostly want to stop caring about whether she thinks she was the victim, whether those other people believe her, or whether she thinks badly of me.
**For anyone who has gone through a painful friendship breakup: how did you completely let go of the things your former friend said about you? How did you stop replaying the situation and needing them to acknowledge that they hurt you?**
I want to get to a place where I can remember the friendship without feeling like I need an apology, explanation, or validation from her to know my own worth.
