Engine replacement on a 2013 Forester - can you use a different engine?

I am getting an engine replacement on my 2013 Forester that burns oil like crazy due to piston rings issues, and I'm wondering if there's an engine that I could get that is more "reliable" than just getting the same engine and putting it in? Since this generation is known for burning oil. I was thinking of getting a JDM engine, but open to all suggestions! Cost not an issue, I am based in BC, Canada.

Currently training for my first ultra at the end of August (50k, 2500m elevation) and dealing with IT band syndrome. Wasn’t doing too bad until a race this weekend where I had to stop running 20k into the 27k course because the pain became unbearable.

My physio has given me a bunch of exercises and advised to reduce downhill running and somehow reduce mileage (but keep running). I’m currently running 40-45km weeks over 6 days with 1000-1200 meters of elevation.

With this reduced mileage, should I assume I won’t be ready for my 50k or is this still possible? Should I aim to do it in 2027 or keep training? I’m feeling very defeated but I don’t want to give up.

Prefacing this by saying I do have a physio who is working with me to get my IT band syndrome to get better, but am just curious about how other people have dealt with this.

I've been dealing with IT band syndrome for over 10 years, well before I started running. It had sort of gotten better over the last few years, but now that I'm training for a 50k in August and ramping up the running volume, it's making a strong comeback, so I'm looking to fix this once and for all.

I am curious about those of you who have dealt with this issue - what are your favourite strengthening exercises/stretches, and how often would you do your strength routine while trying to rehab? Would you do low reps/high weights or high reps/low weights? I'm currently running 5 days a week and strength training twice a week, but my physio has recommended lowering my run volume for a couple weeks in favor of more strength training to build a base.

Curious to hear all your tips and tricks!
