In this video, I recreate Aphex Twin’s classic track “On” entirely inside VCV Rack.
This is a real-time modular performance, launching and layering each musical part in the same structure as the original track — drums, FM synth lines, pads, bass, and rhythmic accents.

The patch is built around FM synthesis, step sequencing, layered drums, and evolving modulation, aiming to capture the early 90s Warp / IDM character.

🎛 Main modules used:
FM-OP, Bogaudio FM-OP, NoteSeqFu, NoteSeq16, Lateralus, Drum Sequencer, Plateau, Vult filters, mixers, Audio utilities.

This video is ideal for fans of Aphex Twin, IDM, modular synthesis, VCV Rack patches, and experimental sound design.

Hi! In this video I recreate the iconic Mass Effect theme "Uncharted Worlds" using VCV Rack modular synthesis.

The goal was to get as close as possible to the original atmosphere and sound design using virtual modular modules inside VCV Rack. The Mass Effect soundtrack by Jack Wall is famous for its cinematic ambient textures and evolving synth layers, and modular synthesis is a perfect tool to explore that sound.

This generative ambient patch in VCV Rack started as a simple idea but evolved into a self-playing ambient + rhythm system you can actually perform live.

It’s directly based on my earlier patch collection from the video “Generative Ambient You Can Perform Live – 10 VCV Rack Patches” (March 18), expanding those ideas into a more complete, album-ready system. https://youtu.be/EyobXY5TTUg?si=bx34tTsBlpuSrV-_

At the core is Mutable Instruments Marbles, generating both melodic CV and triggers. Instead of pure randomness, Mutable Instruments Branches introduces controlled probability, creating rhythms that feel unstable but still musical and intentional.

Patch structure:

Ambient / texture layer
Two Mutable Instruments Plaits voices are blended and shaped through Mutable Instruments Ripples, then processed with Mutable Instruments Clouds (Supercell) for granular texture, space, and movement.
A noise + sample & hold modulation path adds slow drift and subtle variation, keeping the sound constantly evolving.

Rhythm / percussive layer
Multiple drum voices are triggered via probabilistic gates and sent into Chronoblob2, creating cascading, dub-style echoes and shifting rhythmic patterns.
Nothing loops exactly the same — this is a true generative modular system.

A third Mutable Instruments Plaits voice, shaped with an ADSR and processed through Plateau, adds a more defined melodic layer on top of the ambient textures.

Result:

- evolving ambient soundscapes
- generative rhythmic structures
- glitchy, semi-random percussion
- subtle melodic fragments

This is the kind of VCV Rack ambient patch you can let run for hours — or actively perform by tweaking a few parameters, moving from calm, meditative drones into noisy, unstable territories.

Dub Techno Stabs in VCV Rack using Macro Oscillator 2 (Plaits) as the main voice, shaped with subtle modulation and spatial effects. This patch creates evolving, atmospheric stabs typical of dub techno, enhanced with a sidechained reverb for rhythmic depth.

Drums are powered by DocB modules, while Chronoblob handles delay duties.
Bass comes from the Befaco Kick module, providing a deep foundation.
Space and texture are added via Plateau reverb by Valley.
