More provocatively, is there a case to be made that the American War of Independence was a sub-conflict within a wider global war that ought to be called something else, akin to the Second Sino-Japanese War as a sub-conflict of the wider Second World War?

A while ago I was watching a YouTube video about Jack Parsons, a distant disciple of Aleister Crowley who, in his later years, had been notionally supported – and then defrauded – by L Ron Hubbard after WW2. Apparently, while Crowley never met Hubbard, he did warn Parsons about him, to no avail.

I was recently put in mind about this again when I learned that for several years, Scientology’s HQ was in a manor outside East Grinstead in England, latterly run by the parents of Neil Gaiman, who – crimes aside – is not exactly unknown for engaging with occult motifs in his work, and was formerly an auditor for the Scientologists.

Taken together, it seems like there are a lot more transatlantic connections to what I originally perceived as an almost comically American piece of new age religion, and I wonder a bit if there was a meaningful link between Scientology/Dianetics and the various occult movements popping up in the British Isles during and before its emergence.

As a bit of a counterweight to the usual flood of images and videos from 1989, I thought it'd be useful to bring in a more directly academic perspective. Brown's work on the 1989 protests is basically the most up-to-date scholarship out there, and he brings a number of useful insights to the table that often go overlooked. Despite the title of his book invoking Tiananmen specifically, Brown tries to highlight the China-wide nature of the 1989 protest movement. He also draws particular attention to 1989 for non Han people: particularly Muslim protests against the Islamophobic pamphlet "Sexual Customs" and the killing of Tibetan protestors in Lhasa in May, illustrating a broader pattern of repression of ethnic minorities that, even in a moment of crisis, was of higher intensity than that inflicted on Han Chinese in the metropole. Moreover, Brown was one of the first scholars to look at the post-June repressions that ensued after the initial, more violent reprisals. I think his work is something well worth engaging with today, not only in terms of the question of what happened, but also what the events of 1989 meant for whom, and I expect discussion to take place with a commensurate degree of sobriety and seriousness.

There’s this persistent trope in modern Doctor Who that the Doctor has this reputation as an impossibly ancient force of nature who has watched galaxies wink out of existence or what have you. And I’ll grant that yes, they probably have done in a literal sense given how easily they can just pop over to the point at which a star dies and call it a Tuesday, but the implication seems more to be that the Doctor has _oultived_ all these things.

But I mean, have they?

To be fair, the Fugitive Doctor Timeless Child arc _slightly_ cut against this in terms of the Doctor’s own self-perception, but up until the 13th Doctor the simple fact is that the cumulative age of all of the then-known incarnations was in the low four digits. 11 claimed to be 1500 by the end of the siege of Trenzalore, but that means he’d spent 200 years on his ‘farewell tour’ and 300 on Trenzalore – a full fifth of his lifetime spent on one planet fighting a losing battle. And yes _technically_ 12 spent billions of years in the Confession Dial, but again, even if we take the view that 12 did actually remember all of it by the end, that’s not exactly him gaining meaningful life experience or building a reputation out in the real world - and I’d add that the <2000 years of prior lifetime would be less than a speck of dust in his memories if so. And people routinely talk about how impressive it is he’s lived for thousands of years, which in cosmic terms is… peanuts.

To put things in perspective, Rome is about 2700 years old. The Great Pyramid of Giza is about 4600. By the end of the Siege of Trenzalore, the Doctor was still younger than Attila the Hun.

So, does the Doctor actually live up to the hype, and if not then where does the hype come from?
