(Postpandrial) Hypoglycemia after glutening?

All my life I have suffered from weird random hypoglycemic episodes 30 min-1hr after eating (mainly at lunch or dinner) that no-one could ever explain. I've been GF since February now.

Now the other day I was glutened (my own fault) and next to all the fun symptoms we all know I went full hypoglycemic about 1 hr after eating lunch again (which includes +300 grams of potato and half a tub of blueberries aka not low-carb or anything).

My mom noticed this pattern of 'bad bowel days' and me going hypoglycemic. Hence we're wondering if there could be a link with them happening more frequently after gluten exposure?

Anyone else who has similar experiences?

Not feeling as 'welcome' at family/friends since GF

Hey friends!

This has been weighing on my mind a bit ever since having to go gluten free since February, but I often feel less 'welcome' to come somewhere ever since?

For example my parents never have anything GF in their house (except for some bread/crackers I keep there), never invite me to eat over/make something together except if it's some meat on the BBQ (for which I also need to bring my own things like potatoes/veggies whatever and ofcourse no seperate tray or whatever to prevent cross-contamination). The single GF shelf I made in the kitchen also already has their jars of PB and such on them again ... and whenever they go out they never invite me as there's 'probably nothing to eat for you anyways' (but I would just even enjoy being with them and there's always options)

Honestly I don't mind having to bring my own stuff or whatever. But I just feel excluded from everything and aa if I'm a nuisance ever since?

I don't know if anyone feels the same sometimes?

I just can't relate anymore?

First of I don't want to come across as negative. I'm proud of everyone who is on this Sub as it shows that you're actively making an effort to better your health and life!

But I just have to get this off of my chest as lately I've been able to relate less and less to this sub. What started of as a sub of 'Women supporting Women', I feel as if it's now more and more becoming a second 'ED-recovery sub'.

Posts from girls on here are getting (shockingly) younger and younger, calories (dangerously) low and exercise through the roof.... But also the posts seeking validation to basically continue eating x amounts of (low) calories or continuing x amount of exercise/steps - which by all means of you're asking these questions to begin with/are doubting your behaviour then you most likely already KNOW THE ANSWER to begin with!

- No there is no 'magical number of calories' (There is NO MAX. in HA-recovery! Rather a MINIMUM). Also the body is no calculator!

- Yes you're probably overexercising jf you're still obsessing about steps or your workouts

- Yes extreme/'healing' hunger is completely normal. Honour it and eat the food, you're probably going to do it later on anyways so better eat that donut now then 'compensate' with carrots and raid the cupboard later

- Yes mental hunger is also real as the body downregulates ALL bodily systems, even the hormones that have to be produced to create a hunger signal.

And the most important one:

1 period DOES NOT equal 'recovery'. It's just one of the signs that a body is finally healing from all the time it has suffered in an energy deficit. This doesn't mean all the other invisible INTERNAL damage from all this time has been restored! Think about other cells/organs like your bowels (a bowel cell takes 3 months to renew IF fueled adequately and now you wonder why you're constipated/bloated?), heartmuscle, brain, etc.

So no you can't go back into your old routine, you can't go back into a caloric deficit. And why would you even want to after all this hard work....

Instead start living and loving your life, without letting it being controlled by whatever standards you've set for yourself!

Can you actually believe THIS is Gluten free!?

Was finally able to visit Craft Coffee&Pastry this week on my little trip which most people know for their 'viral' GF croissants.

BUT can we also take a moment of appreciation for the most amazing gluten free bread and buns I've eaten that have the taste, consistency AND SIZE of ACTUAL bread!? 😭❤️🤌🏻

Buying things just because they're 'Gluten free'

I've had to go GF since February and one thing I've noticed these past months is how the foods I buy/eat have changed a lot.

Before I would eat mainly things like potatoes, rice, whatever already out of habit. Since going GF I noticed i've been craving and eating way more 'bread products' (RIP the handpalm sized slices...)

But more importantly that I end up buying things like GF cookies/cereals/whatever even though I honestly never really eat them (never really had a sweet tooth to begin with haha). But just as soon as I see something 'new' and ESPECIALLY reduced in price that's GF I end up wanting to buy it?

I honestly think it's really because of the 'scarcity mindset' - aka you want what you "can't have" basically?

Anyone else who also tends to do this? 😅

Product recommendation for Coconut/Rafaello lovers

For anyone who lives in Europe (NL/DE/BE) and who misses Rafaello or anything coconutty - Run and get this.

Been spooning this the past few days. Bit Nutella/spreadable consistency but also hardens when put on cold food (e.g. frozen mango or banana 🤌🏻)

Extreme (nighttime) hunger and thirst after getting glutened?

For the short question: does anyone else experience episodes of extreme hunger after getting glutened?

Yesterday I had organized a high tea for my friend and even though the baker had done an amazing job making a full gluten free version for me (for which I'm GENUINELY THANKFULL). One way or another I still managed to get glutened.

After eating I suddenly started feeling brainfoggy/as if I could faint or cry any minute and nauseaus. Back home my stomach was a BALLOON (I don't get the runs, as I'm always constipated haha)

Even though I was feeling uncomfortable I still ate normally the rest of the day (heck I will even forcefeed myself as I want to gain weight after longstanding undiagnosed celiac).

But tonight I woke up at night feeling 'off' in a way that was hard to describe. A weird achy pain in my bowels, chest and weakness in my legs as if I had ran a marathon? I just knew something was wrong and even though I wasn't hungry my instict told me to 'eat something'

And so I did.

I ate a 2 rice cakes, one with chicken and the other with cheese.

But then the brake was off and this ended in 1000 calories worth of 2 (GF) breadrolls whilst spooning the peanut butter jar, half a croissant, watermelon and probably even more that I have probably already forgotten about all from 3-4 am. Next to an EXTREME THIRST chugging 3 bottles water.

Today I woke up 1.5 kg heavier on the scale.

My body feels very uncomfortable (hot, sweating, skin itching just from all the water retention) and it's honestly screwing a bit with my head as ofcourse this isn't 'normal' 😅

Hence I was wondering if any of you have similar experiences?

Extreme Hunger is not punishment, but your body saving itself.

Sharing this for whoever needs it today. Little backstory I'm currently severely underweight due to longstanding undiagnosed celiac disease.

But no matter what reason - an underweight body is still an underweight body hence we all go through the same (uncomfortable) struggles.

Tonight I woke up once again and something felt 'off'. I had a pain in my chest as well as my bowel that at the same time didn't feel like 'pain'? I felt weak and my legs were hurting but I could still normally walk? It's hard to describe but I just knew something was wrong. And even though I wasn't hungry at all my instict told me to 'eat something'

And so I did.

I ate a 2 rice cakes, one with chicken and the other with cheese.

But then the brake was off and this ended in 1000 calories worth of 2 (GF) breadrolls whilst spooning the peanut butter jar, half a croissant, watermelon and probably even more that I have already forgotten about all from 3-4 am. Next to an extreme thirst (3 bottles water downed instantly).

Today I woke up 1.5 kg heavier on the scale.

My body feels very uncomfortable (hot, sweating, skin itching just from all the water retention).

Does this screw with my mind? Yes.

Do I find these episodes still very hard to process mentally, wishing to just 'be normal'. Yes.

I don't know what woke me up or what my body was going through. Perhaps I was going into hypoglycemia, perhaps my heart was stopping as it's access to quick fuel had ran out.

Who knows.

But I do know that this 'Extreme Hunger' episode happened for a reason. That it's a way my body was protecting me, saving me from whatever was happening tonight.

So let this be your reminder to just eat the food, listen to your body and stop ignoring the signs that it's giving you. Yes it's uncomfortable to go through and yes it's a hard battle both mentally and physically. But the reason you're here is the fact you haven't given up just yet.

That you're not done living the life that's still waiting for you to unfold just yet.

Help for the OG Peanut butter list?

Hello fellow peanutbutter lovers across the globe I turn to thee for help.

For decoration in my living room I'm thinking of making a shelf with a collection of jars from the most OG/typical/special peanutbutter/nutbutter brands from different countries.

Hence I would like to make a list of brands that I should try to get/look for! The only thing I prefer is it to be mainly 'natural' nutbutters.

Hope you guys are able to help me out!

PS: for context I'm from the Netherlands myself 😊

Update:

  • UK: Pip n nut, Meridian, Whole earth, Manilife
  • CA: Kraft
  • US: Teddie, Smuckers
  • AUS: Mayvers, Bega

Chronic pancreatitis - how and when did you get diagnosed?

Hello everyone!

I'm new on this sub as I stumbled upon here through my own (very long) 'mysterious' health journey which might finally be the answer I've been searching for through my life. (Sorry for the lengthy post in advance)

Some context I've struggled with chronic bowel/health issues my entire life, mostly chronic constipation and bloating/stomach pains on reaction to food (with never any real 'correlation' except high fatty/sugary foods).

On top of this about once or twice a year I would get these severe 'bowel attacks' were I would get a VERY intense stabbing pain around my stomach/lower ribs about 30 mins after a random meal (but more often after fattier/sugary foods like waffles with cream or something) lasting for about 1-2 hrs were I can only walk/sit bend over in fetal position.

Fast forward to the past 5 years - the frequency of these episodes has increased from a few times a year to almost 1-2x a month and often 1-2 days after another. I've also lost almost 20 kg without any dietary changes, heck I need to eat up to 3000 calories a day to maintain my VERY underweight body at the moment.... ( 30y old female, 1.65 and 35kg....)

Doctors can't find 'anything wrong' and think that I'm just anorexic (I even bring my mother with me to F'ing confirm I eat!).

The past week I suddenly started feeling nauseaus, cold/chickenpox and very weak for several days after eating my lunch up to the weekend where suddenly I had another 'pain attack' after eating breakfast that for some reason lasted all day long (which never happened before). No meds helped, untill (as actually a junior doctor myself) something clicked and thought "what if it's a pancreatitis"?. Hence my mom drove to the nearest pharmacy to get some enzymes and behold after taking them the pain went down to only an annoying background level and I was able to eat again!?

The nausea and low-level pain remained for the next days but was bearable with the enzymes. I went to the GP 2 days after the episode but he wrote it off once again as 'just a bowel flare with the heatwave'. I've demanded an ultrasound nonetheless which will be next Wednesday.

I'm sorry for the lengthy post but for my questions:

- Does anyone recognize themselves in my story? How and when did you get diagnosed?

- Anyone diagnosed by normal abdominal ultrasound?

- Did anyone also suffer mainly from constipation and random hypoglycemias mainly after eating and VERY hardly responding to additional food?

Once again I'm very sorry for my lengthy post but I'm hoping to finally put an end to this life-long puzzle of my health and I want to thank anyone who takes the time to read/respond to my post! ❤️

Sourdough pan size

Good morning!

Today I'm making my first GF sourdough, but after making the dough I'm honestly starting to doubt if my pan is going to be too small?

For comparison this is my dough after 30-ish minutes into the 2-4hr rest period and I assume it will continu on to expand or remain this size? Otherwise I think I might need to dash and find a bigger pan last minute 😅

Buns keep on turning into 'flatbreads'?

Hello Gluten free magicians on here!

I'm VERY new to GF baking and tried my second attempt at making buns. But for some reason they always end up as 'flatbreads' after shaping/second rising?

Recipe I used:

250 grams schär brot mix

230 water

5 grams yeast

5 grams psyllium

10 grams honey

10 grams oil

1st rise for an hour, second rise about 45 mins.

Anything I did wrong? I did cover them with a wet towel at first that I took off later as I thought maybe there was too much moisture this way which was causing it? Our would that haven't made any difference?

Bakeries that ship EU-wide?

Hey guys!

I'm looking for some good European gluten-free bakeries (or webshops with also baked goods) that would ship to EU-wide?

Honestly I've been dying for some good gluten free baked goods (especially a cinnamon bun, croissants and czech kolache 😭) but most bakeries don't ship across Europe or are located atleast 2hrs from where I live...

Any good suggestions? ☺️

Higher caloric demand as a celiac in general?

Hey guys!

I've gone strictly GF for about 2-3 months now and have been struggling a lot with not being able to gain weight... Ofcourse the body needs a higher amount of calories to be able to 'heal' but I was wondering if the higher caloric demand persisted even after the initial healing period?

For context I'm a 30y female with severe bowel issues and constipation all my life. I 'randomly' started losing weight in 2019 even though I didn't alter my diet (and exercising even less due to a 'fun little virus' that went around back then)

All tests negative, but the weight kept dropping up to now only weighing 35 kg at 1.65m.... whilst eating 2500-2700+ calories MINIMUM everyday!

I feel horrible, all my muscle has wasted away (used to strength train/CF but am now not even able to put a barbell on a rack anymore), I look like a child and doctors are at loss up to the point they don't even believe I'm eating 🙃

As a kind of 'last resort' my mom suggested me going gluten free and I have been feeling much better with regards to energy/pain and mentally in general so we do suspect gluten are at play, but my weight still won't budge?

Anyone who experienced something similar?

Thanks in advance ❤️

Feeling 'weird'/Unicorn syndrome because of needing a high amount of cals?

TW: I do mention numbers.

I don't know if anyone can relate, but frequently I struggle with this stupid brainworm where I feel abnormal/like an alien or just general a feeling of 'this doesn't apply to me' with regards to my caloric intake.

Especially nowadays with social media being full of FDOE/WIEIAD where you see people being super active and 'fueling' their 10+k run/hyrox/whatever on what? 2 dates and if lucky a ricecake hardly hitting 1800 calories?

And here I am eating 2700-3000 a day with the scale not budging a digit... (I'm 165 cm btw so not tall either). And then wondering why I can't 'just be satisfied' eating a small/normal meal instead of having to run to the fridge 3x after and even at night 😅

Hence my question if anyone else sometimes feels 'guilty'/abnormal for needing so much food?
