Dog Passed Normal Urine Earlier but Blood Appeared While Straining to Poop
Need veterinary opinion regarding pelvic fracture recovery complications in a stray dog.
A stray dog (around 18 kg) from my area suffered a pelvic fracture after being hit by an auto around 2 weeks ago. X-rays were done and conservative management/cage rest was advised. She is currently on pain medication and strict rest.
For the first few days, she was able to empty her bladder completely once daily with assistance. Recently, while resting in the cage, she started urinating small amounts multiple times a day.
Main concern:
Today morning she emptied a good amount of normal yellow urine. Later, she was straining very hard trying to pass stool and was unable to do so. While straining, a small amount of blood appeared mixed with urine. I immediately took her to the vet.
The vet performed an enema and removed hard stool. They suspect UTI/inflammation due to repeated straining and started her on Enrofloxacin 150 mg (1/2 tablet once daily for 2 weeks). They mentioned that if symptoms continue after 2–3 days, a urine sample test will be done.
PS:
Passing stool has been one of the biggest problems since the injury. She was unable to poop for 3 days initially, so on vet recommendation I gave her Looz syrup to soften the stool. After that, she was able to poop twice with around a 5-day gap each time.
Last Saturday, she passed a very large amount of stool (hard + liquid mixed, almost 10 times more than her normal quantity) and seemed completely fine afterward.
Today again, after around another 5-day gap, she tried very hard to poop but couldn’t pass stool properly, and this time blood appeared in the urine while straining.
Current symptoms:
- Repeated attempts to poop even after enema
- Small urine leakage/dribbling while resting sometimes
- Blood appeared mainly during straining
- Appetite reduced but still taking soup/liquids
- Able to reposition herself and move slightly
- No swollen abdomen noticed currently
I wanted to ask:
- Can severe straining/constipation in pelvic fracture cases cause temporary blood in urine?
- Is continued straining after enema common?
- Does this sound more like UTI/inflammation or should I worry about urinary stones/bladder injury?
- Any suggestions regarding diet or bowel management during pelvic fracture recovery?
Would really appreciate opinions from experienced vets/rescuers. Thank you.
