Dog Passed Normal Urine Earlier but Blood Appeared While Straining to Poop

Need veterinary opinion regarding pelvic fracture recovery complications in a stray dog.

A stray dog (around 18 kg) from my area suffered a pelvic fracture after being hit by an auto around 2 weeks ago. X-rays were done and conservative management/cage rest was advised. She is currently on pain medication and strict rest.

For the first few days, she was able to empty her bladder completely once daily with assistance. Recently, while resting in the cage, she started urinating small amounts multiple times a day.

Main concern:
Today morning she emptied a good amount of normal yellow urine. Later, she was straining very hard trying to pass stool and was unable to do so. While straining, a small amount of blood appeared mixed with urine. I immediately took her to the vet.

The vet performed an enema and removed hard stool. They suspect UTI/inflammation due to repeated straining and started her on Enrofloxacin 150 mg (1/2 tablet once daily for 2 weeks). They mentioned that if symptoms continue after 2–3 days, a urine sample test will be done.

PS:
Passing stool has been one of the biggest problems since the injury. She was unable to poop for 3 days initially, so on vet recommendation I gave her Looz syrup to soften the stool. After that, she was able to poop twice with around a 5-day gap each time.

Last Saturday, she passed a very large amount of stool (hard + liquid mixed, almost 10 times more than her normal quantity) and seemed completely fine afterward.

Today again, after around another 5-day gap, she tried very hard to poop but couldn’t pass stool properly, and this time blood appeared in the urine while straining.

Current symptoms:
- Repeated attempts to poop even after enema
- Small urine leakage/dribbling while resting sometimes
- Blood appeared mainly during straining
- Appetite reduced but still taking soup/liquids
- Able to reposition herself and move slightly
- No swollen abdomen noticed currently

I wanted to ask:

  1. Can severe straining/constipation in pelvic fracture cases cause temporary blood in urine?
  2. Is continued straining after enema common?
  3. Does this sound more like UTI/inflammation or should I worry about urinary stones/bladder injury?
  4. Any suggestions regarding diet or bowel management during pelvic fracture recovery?

Would really appreciate opinions from experienced vets/rescuers. Thank you.

Dog Passed Normal Urine Earlier but Blood Appeared While Straining to Poop

Anyone having experience with UTI in dogs?

I have a pelvic fracture case, and she has completed 2 weeks now. I started keeping her in a cage this week, but she was not letting herself pee properly, so she would mostly urinate while asleep. There was overflow of urine, though she was still able to empty around half of it.

She also needed to pass stool, and today was day 6. In the morning, I opened the cage so she could move around a bit. She peed a lot and everything seemed normal initially. After a while, she tried to pass stool but couldn’t, and a little blood came out, so we took her to the vet.

The vet did an enema and said she seemed physically fine. A little blood came out, which the vet said was okay. But after coming back home, I noticed that whenever she tried to pass stool, a small amount of blood was also coming through her urine. She also refused to eat even her favorite food.

I informed the vet again. The vet suspects it might be a UTI if not that it could be a stone in her bladder for which xray have to be done but before that have to try with the medicine and gave medicines, and asked me to monitor her for 2–3 days. If the blood continues, we’ll need to do a urine test.

The vet physically examined her today and said everything else looked good, but honestly I’m panicking a bit. I really hope it’s just a UTI and nothing more serious.

Has anyone dealt with something similar in pelvic fracture or recovery cases?

Also, the doctor advised giving her a high-fiber diet so her stool stays soft and easier to pass.

PS: She is a stray dog(our community dog) who got ran over by auto and got multiple fracture near her pelvis.
She has completed 2 weeks of home treatment.

Need Soft Food Ideas for Dog Recovering from Pelvic Fracture + UTI

Doggo is currently having UTI based on her symptoms. So right now I can’t give her rice as she is not eating liver which is her favourite. I am advised to give high in fibre food. So I made carrot, beans, pumpkin soup mixing it with liver broth and with some chunks but she didn’t have it much may be due to pain and inflammation. Hence I was looking for gravy type food or treat which she will eat some.
This product mentioned brown rice and high in fibre although in kibble form but I can make it gravy by adding liver soup.
Will it be good for her or should I stick with chicken breast + pumpkin + sweet potato + beans+ carrot soup and add some curd into it?
Reason for asking is she didn’t eat much and I was thinking to feed something which she will eat a bit.

She doesn’t eat chicken breast, liver she likes but bot eating currently.

She Hears the Azaan and Starts Howling

This was taken 5 days back just to observe her behavior.

At first, I thought she was howling because she was in a lot of pain or discomfort even after getting the painkiller. But then I noticed that she howls whenever there is an azaan.

She does the same thing even from inside the cage.

That One Side Eye from Whitey 👀

Once, a delivery guy called me instead of ringing the bell, even though he had never done that before. Whitey was sitting in a sphinx pose and giving him a side eye.

The delivery guy, who already knew him and came often, told me that Whitey was staring at him in a way that genuinely scared him.

Injured doggo care tips

I am giving this dog home treatment for 3-4 weeks. Peeing is not the issue for me now as her peeing time is fixed 8-10 am that too for one time. I was giving her soupy food with chunks before for one time. I was adding some rice but that delayed her pooping. So on day 3rd I started adding lot of rice in soup and curd also I added. Meanwhile I was giving her constipation syrup for 1.5 days and yesterday she pooped a lot 5-6 times of her normal one. Thankfully she was wearing diaper (reusable) so it was not messy. I started feeding her again today but I am confused how much rice I should give her and for how many times. In addition to that I want to know when she will poop again. Reason I am asking is because she feels pain and cry a lot in distress. Yesterday was predictable because of medicine plus I fed her rice with curd plus chunks in great amount to make her belly full as advised by doctor(she asked me to add carbs also)

PS. She is having pelvic fracture.

Injured Stray Dog Recovery Update & Fundraiser

First of all, I want to thank everyone who donated earlier and supported her recovery. I’m reaching out again because her medical expenses have now reached around ₹17,000 (excluding food expenses). It has been one week since the accident.

Through Reddit, I was able to raise around ₹7,000 through the post and by directly messaging a few kind people.

Her condition is gradually improving. She is now on one painkiller tablet three times a day. From Day 6 onwards, she started peeing only once a day, usually between 8–10 AM. She is now able to reposition herself and changes her position much more frequently than before.

She still howls sometimes due to discomfort or pain, but I give her the prescribed painkiller when needed.

Thank you once again to everyone who has helped and supported her recovery journey. 🐾

PS: Today is her day 9(from the day she started receiving home treatment and medicines)
Also her name is mankulo(I heard uncle calling her).

About Me:

I take care of around 17–18 stray dogs every day—feeding 14–15 of them at least once, and 2 dogs twice daily. I also provide basic medical care, including antibiotics for wounds and skin issues, along with reflective collars for their safety.

About the Situation:

Day before yesterday, a stray dog from our area was hit by an auto. She was in severe pain, and yesterday evening, with the help of a kind uncle, I took her to a nearby veterinary clinic. After examination, we were told that she has a fracture. I will be sharing the X-ray image as well.

The vet has advised that the fracture can only be treated through surgery at a veterinary hospital. I checked with multiple NGOs, and even at a subsidized rate for a stray dog, the surgery will cost at least ₹30,000 (it would have been much higher otherwise). I have already spent around ₹4,000 on her initial treatment, including medicines and X-rays.

I also spoke with an animal trust, and they confirmed that the minimum expense, including surgery and post-operative care, would be around ₹30,000.

Additionally, I spoke to the vet again and asked if it would be okay to wait a few days before the surgery. They strongly advised not to delay and suggested getting it done within 1–2 days—ideally immediately. However, due to the holiday today and limited help available, I will be taking her for treatment tomorrow without fail. The vet also mentioned that delaying the surgery can lead to bone misalignment and increase the risk of infection.

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to manage the full cost on my own. I will contribute as much as I can, but it is still beyond my capacity. I am planning to proceed with her surgery as soon as I can raise the required funds.

If anyone is able to help—even with a small amount—it would mean a lot and go a long way in saving her life.

For transparency, I’m happy to share all medical records, bills, and updates with anyone who would like to verify.

Thank you for your kindness and support. 🐾
