How do you set boundaries with your family.
I’m 24 and currently working. I’m a very private person, and I don’t like sharing my personal goals, plans, or ambitions with anyone—not even my family. My father has always insisted that I should share my goals with him, but instead of supporting me, he often lectures me and says things like, “You won’t achieve anything in life.” So naturally, I stopped wanting to share things with him.
Recently, my mother asked about my salary. I told her, and I genuinely didn’t mind her knowing. She told my father, and honestly, I didn’t care about that either.
The problem started when I found out that my father discusses my salary, routine, and other personal details with my two married sisters. Again, I wouldn’t even care if it stayed between them…but my sisters apparently tell their husbands almost everything about my life.
That’s what really pisses me off.
I don’t understand why my personal life needs to become a discussion topic for people who aren’t even directly involved in it.
My sisters husband are in their mid 30s, and somehow they constantly compare their lives with mine. I’m in my 20s. I bought a Mehran a while ago, and they made comments like, “Is car mein kya hai, is car mein aura minus hoga.”
The funny part is that when they were my age, they didn’t even have their own bikes. I’m not saying this to insult them..I genuinely don’t care what they have or don’t have. Alhamdulillah, I’m financially doing better than they were at my age, and I’m grateful for that.
What bothers me is the constant comparison.
They also talk about how my father has given me everything and how their wife (my sister) have a share in his property and all that. And honestly, I don’t care. From my side, my father can give everything to my sisters. I have absolutely no issue with that.
My problem is their husbands and the energy they bring into these conversations.
My father really likes my sisters’ husbands, which I understand. They’re attached to our family, and obviously a father would probably like seeing his daughters remain close to their parents after marriage.
But personally, I don’t want my life to be discussed with anyone outside my immediate family.
I’m not hiding anything illegal or embarrassing. I simply believe that my salary, routine, goals, plans, finances, and personal life are mine to share when I choose.
Am I being unreasonable for feeling this way, or is this a completely normal boundary to want?
