The vibrant, angular, cel shaded games of the early 2000’s
One of my favorite styles in gaming, I LOVE how expressive it is and how much it all pops. I could only think of two examples.
Jet Set Radio (and Future)
The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker

I almost always see this in any media that isn’t movies, Jet Set Radio, Splatoon, TWEWY, Persona, No More Heroes, those are games. FLCL is an anime, Scott Pilgrim is a comic, I need MORE of this urban feel with heavy emphasis on style, swag, and overall coolness while fighting a general higher power
The Backrooms has two main different interpretations online, one being more in line with Kane Pixel’s vision, just having it be the sterile yellow hallways with the occasional monster that can be explained within the lore, the idea being these imprints and reflections of an incorrect idea of reality is spectacular and a wonderful idea. It’s also very inspired by House of Leaves, and I think this is a great way to have that mythos live on.
The other interpretation is almost more of a group writing project, with hundreds of layers all made by the internet as everyone bands together to try and make their interpretation of the same mythos, and THAT’S awesome. It’s everyone coming together to be able to show off how they think this should work, and yeah it sometimes comes off a little juvenile or robloxy, but it’s together, and that’s great.
Hellfire- Hunchback of Notre Dame. Sung by Frollo to grapple with and justify his lust and wrath, and greed.
Raise Him Up- The Boys. Oh Father is a priest I believe, and this song was showing his true devotion to his new one god, Homelander. Directly insulting god and Jesus.
Made in Heaven- Jojo’s. On a technicality, due to this stand being named for a song. It’s used to show the lengths which Pucci has now worshipped Dio, and how it’s manifested.
Knives Out- Ransom is obviously the killer. The clear motive, the obvious lack of care, everything about him screams murderer. But we know Martha gave the wrong medicine, so he can’t be? Turns out he DID switch the medicine, but she still administered the correct one, meaning the death was meaningless and it was on Ransom.
Speed Racer- Racer X is directly called out to be Rex Racer by Speed multiple times… until he takes off his helmet to reveal it’s not him, Speed’s brother really is dead… until we learn it IS Rex, he got his face changed to protect his family. It is him.
I do NOT think HLD is most likely, but I do believe it has the potential to be the best. It’d have to be done properly tho, not a word of dialogue, all visual indicators, this was done perfectly with Flow, it can be done here. Keep the serene beauty of the world and make the story a little more present and I think it could be the best video game adaptation and I’m not joking.
They’re bright. They’re overly edited. They’re beautiful. This is just a mere fraction of the amount he made. This is the work of a visionary, a genius, I’d say this is the work of an artist, plain and simple. They tell a story, they show a purpose. They have character. They show identity. You look at this and know it could only be Gucci Mane.
Jiji and Okarun (DanDaDan)- even when there’s a love triangle thing happening with them, Jiji is wholeheartedly supportive of Okarun no matter what. He’s truly a genuinely good person to him
Todo and Yuji (Jujutsu Kaisen)- while Yuji is already big, buff and confident, Todo is bigger, buffer and confidenter, and has flown into MULTIPLE fights that he couldn’t do ANYTHING in just to have Yuji’s back. Everyone hates his guts but he’s the best friend.
Body improvement club and Mob (Mob Psycho 100)- they want to help Mob improve himself and are kind and supportive of him. A group of fine upstanding young men
I just finished House of Leaves (loved it) and have recently begun The King in Yellow, I wanted to see how people would stack them against one another. Where is the former influenced by the latter? Where might each exceed the other? Etc.
Everytime we see this dude not controlling Yuji he’s just chillin on some bones. For one, that’s gotta be uncomfortable, and for two, that’s gotta be boring as hell. Do you think Sukuna cranks it?
THIS IS NOT HATRED ON THE ARTISTS THEMSELVES, all of the art I show and SO many other examples of this are made by WILDLY talented people whose art I love and respect
(In-game Sam on the final slide)
It’s like come on, that’s Sam’s THING, that’s his defining physical trait. Hair is what causes these people to stand out the most, and for Sam he’s got that SSJ2 Gohan hair, even with the curl in the front. When I see him, I think of that. When he doesn’t have that, I cannot acknowledge that it’s him. When I first encountered winter and he wore a hat, I stood there for like three minutes wondering who the hell that was. His identity is dependent on the hair, that’s what stops him from just looking like blonde Alex. Draw him with the hair, don’t be scared
