Little background:

I moved to Japan one month ago and I‘m studying Japanese (starting with N4) in Takadanobaba. Before coming to Japan, I got a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management and I worked as a business application consultant for product labelling in Switzerland for about almost 4 years. My main responsibilities were IT operations (database administration, second-level support, etc.), Product Data in SAP (Managing classification and characteristics for product labels, leading integration product data from manufacturing to SAP Equip Management), application management and technical system owner, and I was also involved in system integrations to SAP and other label systems.

While working in an IT support role, I didn’t programme much beyond SQL. However, I collaborated with a developer to translate our business requirements into technical functionalities. During my job, I got more interested in product data management and integration, particularly exploring SAP functionalities.

Back in Switzerland, I started self-studying backend engineering, but I am also interested in data engineering. I‘m bit struggling with the path I should consider: backend engineering or data engineering, or both? Besides my interest, I also want to develope my skills that’s fits the current job market needs in Japan, but it seems like they need a bit of everything (based on google searches). Since many posts are IT related, I thought I can reach out to you, asking about your opinion and if it even makes sense to do one of them with my background. I know I do not have a degree in CS nor can I show working experiences in development of our labelling systems or interfaces to SAP.

If I had to choose between backend engineering and data engineering for a job in Japan which would be better? Do I even stand a chance? I think many here have a CS degree which makes sense. I enjoyed my support role but my Japanese isn’t good enough and I don’t think I’ll reach the required fluency anytime soon. Are there other roles that might be easier for me? I considered SAP but I don’t see any suitable positions.

As you can see, I have many thoughts and unclear ideas but I’m struggling to know where to begin. Any guidance or opinions you could offer would be greatly appreciated!

As the title says, I got my CoE and I’ll be starting the Career Path Program with ISI Language School in Takadanobaba in October 2026.

I was wondering if anyone else here will be joining the same program? It would be really nice to get to know some people beforehand, especially since I’ll be moving to Tokyo and would love to make some friends there.

I think it could also be great to connect with others who are starting the program around the same time, so we don’t have to start completely alone and can maybe explore Tokyo together from the beginning. 😊

I know this isn’t a regular reddit post and a crazy favour to ask. Last week, I took my flight from Zagreb to Switzerland early morning. Unfortunately, I lost my headphones at the security gate. The employee were checking everything but I was already late and I had to catch my flight.

Long story short: My headphones were found but they do not ship them to Switzerland. Either I or someone else picks them up.

Is anyone willing to help me out and can back them up and ship them to Germany for me? Of course, I‘ll cover all costs prior. I would hiiiiighly appreciate it.

Hello everyone!

I’ll be living in Tokyo, starting from October or November this year. I’ve managed to get a working schedule that allows for morning classes and I’d prefer intensive classes three to five times a week for about a year. I’ve already studied Genki 1 on my own and am currently studying Genki 2. I’m also aiming to pass the N4 exam this July (please wish me luck! 😂🤞🏼)

Has anyone else been in a similar situation and could recommend a Japanese language school? I’m flexible with location since I’ll be living in Akabane and working in Shinagawa.

I’d really appreciate any recommendations or even a small hint. Thanks! :)

I’m struggling with my body and plastic surgery has crossed my mind ever since this thought occurred. I’d love a tummy tuck and a facial lipo. My double chin bothers me but my cheeks are enormous! I’ve managed to lose some weight but I’d like to get rid of those big cheeks.

I’ve been considering South Korea for both surgeries, particularly the facial lipo. Could some of you share your experiences, doctor names and clinic details along with prices? I know I can research this myself but I’d rather trust recommendations than find clinics and be swayed by client reviews..

I originally wanted to buy the famous Chinese Adidas jacket but it’s sold out everywhere in Shanghai.

Are there any great and fashionable alternatives? I don’t need the three stripes or the Adidas logo; a Chinese or Shanghai brand would be fine. I’d like something fashionable and traditional like the Adidas jacket.

Any recommendations? If possible, I’d appreciate the name and a location or link to buy it on Taobao.

I booked flights from Milano to Shanghai and back via booking.com. I selected my seats directly at booking.com and that’s it.

Yesterday, Booking.com emailed me asking me to check in if available. I went to juneyaoairline‘s homepage and when I started the check-in process, I realised there weren’t any seats for my name. I was then asked to select seats, but the ones I had requested from Booking.com were already taken. I’m unsure whether they were reserved for me by Booking.com or if they simply couldn’t do it. Booking.com could not give me any information about that. I want to avoid double-booking and any potential complications or additional costs.

When I read the warning of juneyaoairline, it says „At present, online check-in services are not supported for international flights; please check in at the offline counter in advance“ so now I am very confused and worried.

Any one has the same experience and can share support with me?

My partner (Japanese citizen) and I (German/Croatian citizen) are planning to get married in April/May 2027. We both live in Japan and are not Canadian residents.

We’ve been looking into options and found that getting married in Canada seems relatively straightforward for international couples, so we are considering Vancouver.

I’ve read a bit about marriage licences, marriage commissioners, and registration, but I’m still confused about how the process actually works in practice.

Could anyone who has gone through this (especially in British Columbia/Vancouver) help us understand the process?

Specifically, we’re unsure about:

Do we need to book a marriage commissioner ourselves, or is this arranged through the city/province?

Can we get married at a town hall, or do we need to arrange the location?

Do we get two witnesses by whoever we request to register our marriage / perform marriage ceremony?

After the ceremony, how do we receive the marriage certificate, and can it be sent internationally (e.g. to Japan)?

Any general tips for non-resident couples doing this in Vancouver?

We’ve read some information online, but we haven’t found a clear step-by-step experience from couples in a similar situation, so any advice or personal experience would be really appreciated.
