Call Your Reps to Oppose the Attacks on the Environment and Endangered Species in the FY’17 Spending Bill (Wolves Especially are Under Threat)

The House Appropriations Committee has passed a funding bill that undermines the Endangered Species Act: It includes 21 poison pill riders that would remove protection for vulnerable species. It includes provisions that delist wolves nationwide, delist grizzly bears in the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem, and block protections for wolverines. Section 125 of the bill not only delists gray wolves, but also prevents judicial review; which is especially sinister.

The bill also slashes the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s budget by 5%, and slashes the ESA listing budget by $7million. In addition to this, the bill cuts EPA funding by 20%, and enforcement by $169million.

A descriptions of all poison pill riders are listed here in a letter sent to the Appropriations Committee by a group of over 80 conservation groups.

Here’s a statement by the Center for Biological Diversity on the bill.

Urge your congressional reps to remove the riders in the spending bill that undermine wildlife and the environment.

You can use form submissions as well. Here’s one from the NY Wolf Conservation Center. However, calling is much more effective.

The Trump Administration is Lifting the Ban on M-44 Cyanide Bombs.

These devices are designed to bait and kill wildlife. They kill indiscriminately - around half the animals killed are not the intended targets. They have been known to kill pets and injure people on public land.

This is a NY Times article on it, but it’s behind a paywall. You can also read more about them on a fact sheet from Project Coyote here.

One way to take action is to pressure your state representatives to ban these devices at a state level. You can also ask your congressional reps to support Canyon’s Law: A bill that would ban these bombs at a federal level.

This provision prevents states from enacting animal welfare laws (such as California’s Prop 12). Call your congressional reps and tell them to vote NO on Section 12006 of the Farm Bill (‘Save Our Bacon’ act).

Gosar Amendment 16 (150) is a sneaky provision in the Farm Bill (H.R. 7567), which lowers the standard of evidence for depredation of livestock by Mexican Grey Wolves. Currently, the standard for proving that livestock were killed by wolves is rigorous, and requires the presence of subcutaneous hemorrhaging in the carcass. This sign shows that the animal was alive at the time of wolf predation, distinguishing it from post-mortem scavenging.

What are the consequences?

Removing the requirement for subcutaneous hemorrhaging allows ranchers to blame lobos for livestock depredation, even if that wasn’t the case. Depredation incidents trigger lethal action by wildlife agencies, so this amendment makes it much easier to kill lobos.

Please call your reps and tell them to vote against this amendment.
