VIC EBA - new email about stop work

You can still stop work from ED/ICU:

”Here’s what you need to know:

  • There are no blanket departmental exemptions from the current stop work.
  • Working in Emergency Departments, Major Trauma, Intensive Care or another time-critical area does not automatically exclude you from participating.
  • If you intend to participate, tell your health service or department. It is then the health service’s responsibility to manage staffing and operational arrangements.
  • It is not your responsibility to find replacement doctors or determine minimum staffing levels for your department.
  • Doctors must continue to exercise their professional and clinical judgement, including where intervention is immediately necessary to prevent a serious or imminent risk to life, safety or health.”

What’s the vibe like at everyone’s hospital? I really hope we can maintain momentum and get our message across

Vic industrial action

A post from 7News popped up in my feed about the strike, and the overwhelming majority of comments were supportive of doctors and the strike. There's a narrative that the public won't support us, but I think people are on our side. If you aren't an AMA/ASMOF member, it's time to join so you can participate in the upcoming industrial action and insist we are paid and treated fairly.

New pantry set up

I am blessed with lots of space in new house. There are 3 big drawers underneath. Looking to buy organising gear to optimally set up pantry. I have some ikea turntables but what kind of boxes, dividers, pull out drawers could help? How would you set this up? Glassware can go elsewhere too.

Any other kitchen tips for organising drawers welcome too

5mo frequent waking - schedule help

I think something is up with my schedule due to hourly overnight wakes. Baby is generally very content, barely cries, happy little chap. Until 3mo he was sleeping up to 8h overnight and it's gradually deteriorated from there. He's had the typical change in his sleep structure 3-4mo but is getting worse rather than better. I realised he was developing a feed to sleep association at 4mo so we started putting him in his cot and patting him - with that change he went back to sleeping 6h first stretch. However we've since had immunisations, a cold and 2 weekends away where he hated the travel cot, and everything is a mess.

Currently we wake 6-6.30. I'm trying 3 naps atm which looks like 2-2.5/2-2.5/2.5-3/3 have to be somewhat flexible as I have a 4yo. Total day sleep is about 2.5h, usually a 30 min first and last nap and longer lunchtime nap. When I'm home he will sleep in the crib if I pat him, I have to rescue the midday nap. Bedtime 7-7.30 - feed, pjs, pat in cot. He usually goes to sleep quickly.

Overnight he has been feeding Q3-4H, which I don't mind too much because he feeds in 5 mins so the wakes are very short. How he is having multiple false starts then waking literally hourly, and waking 15-20 mins after going to sleep overnight too. This has got worse with going to 3 naps but I'm not sure which component is the culprit.

Total day naps are around 2.5h and total sleep seems to be around 13h.

My oldest was very low sleep needs and a challenging sleeper so this is kind of triggering for me. Feel a bit stuck because I'm not interested in CIO/Ferber, but also not interested in cosleeping. Hoping some schedule changes will help, or suggestions on fading etc.

The real issue with capping specialist fees

Why is the media outrage over specialist fees, and not over the government systematically eroding Medicare and the public health system? It should be upsetting to everyone who supports public healthcare that the goal of capping specialist fees is to divert patients (and their money) from the public to private system, and funnel money to private hospital operators and PHI, and that this is happening due to private business lobbying. This is part of a multifaceted attack on our healthcare system - scope creep, Medicare rebates, overseas doctors, eroding conditions and pay for doctors, underfunding public health.

Shorter age gap between number 2 and 3?

Hi everyone. We have a 4 year age gap between our first and second which has been lovely. However we aren’t getting any younger and would like number 1 to not be too far apart from the youngest so are thinking about a 2 yr age gap. Has anyone got this spacing? Are we crazy?

VIC EBA - AMA meeting Monday 29 June

New email from AMA tonight about a meeting to endorse industrial action. I’m not affiliated, just feeling the injustice of our pay and conditions. Please join the union and attend the Zoom meeting if you can.

———

Dear Member,

ASMOF Victoria and AMA Victoria are calling an urgent mass member meeting of public hospital doctors to consider and endorse a proposed industrial action plan.

Monday 29 June
8pm
Online

This meeting represents a critical moment in our campaign for a fair and modern agreement for Victorian public hospital doctors.

At the meeting, ASMOF Victoria and AMA Victoria will:

  • Provide an update on enterprise bargaining
  • Outline the proposed industrial action strategy
  • Explain what protected industrial action could involve
  • Answer member questions
  • Seek member endorsement to proceed

Your attendance matters.

The strength of our campaign depends on the collective commitment of members across Victoria's public hospitals. A strong turnout will demonstrate that doctors are united and prepared to stand together to achieve meaningful change.

This meeting follows a significant development in the bargaining process, with the Fair Work Commission approving ASMOF Victoria and AMA Victoria's Single Interest Employer Authorisation (SIEA) application.

The SIEA allows bargaining to proceed across participating health services as a single group and marks the beginning of the next phase of our campaign.

For too long, doctors have faced growing workforce pressures, excessive workloads, unsafe hours and remuneration that continues to fall behind comparable health professions.

We remain committed to negotiating in good faith, meaningful improvements will only be achieved if doctors are prepared to stand together and make their voices heard.

The coming weeks will be pivotal. The decisions we make now will help shape the future of our profession, our workplaces and the care we provide to patients.

Smoke drift problem

Hi everyone, seeking some advice on a frustrating situation with smoke drift in a strata apartment

I live in an apartment in Vic which I bought last year. Since moving in I've realised that my downstairs neighbour smokes all day every day - tobacco and weed. When he smokes in his courtyard, the smoke comes in my windows. When he smokes inside, it fills the common stairwell and comes into my apartment + my kids room through the front door. I wouldn't care if it was occasional but it's seriously constant, and I have to walk through the hotboxed stairwell with my kids multiple times a day. There is basically always thick smoke.

My apartment follows model bylaws including the smoke drift bylaw. I have asked him directly with no change in behaviour. His apartment is owned by a housing association. I have contacted them directly and made a complaint - they say I can't prove he is responsible for the smoke in the stairwell and that he is allowed to smoke in his courtyard but suggested I call the police... I have also contacted my body corp, who have said my issue is with him and they take no responsibility for the stairwell issue (I also asked them about improving ventilation in the stairwell to reduce the smoke issue).

What are my options here? I think if I sell in the current market I will take a huge hit but I've hit a wall with my body corp and the association who owns the other apartment.

Suggest a carrier for me? Back pain

Hi everyone. 12 weeks in with 2nd baby. I have been wearing him in a Boba bliss which has been fantastic.

With my first, I wore her in an ergo omni 360 for at least 18 months but had quite a bit of back pain. I had a Happy Baby carrier which felt unsupportive and I never liked wearing.

I haven't had any pain in the Boba, but now he is over 13lb I am looking for another less stretchy carrier. I put him in the Ergo and had back pain afterwards!

I'm not sure what it is about the dynamics/loading that causes pain with the Ergo but not the Boba. I have been doing pilates and core work to try to help...

I was looking at a Lenny Upgrade and can try before I buy. Any other suggestions for what might be worth trying?
