May be starting my first HCA role soonish, what do i need to know?

First time posting in this sub, sorry if its the wrong flair!

Hi everyone,

I've recently been invited to interview for a part-time Healthcare Assistant role in a care home. This would be my first job in the care sector, so I'd really appreciate any advice from people who currently work (or have worked) as HCAs.

A little bit about me:

I have a Level 3 qualification in Health & Social Care, but no paid care experience yet.

I currently work in a kennel, so I'm very used to cleaning up urine, faeces, vomit and other unpleasant jobs. That side of the role doesn't worry me.

The home provides nursing care for people living with dementia, mental health conditions, physical disabilities, visual/hearing impairments, alcohol/drug misuse issues, and younger adults.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on a few things:

• What does a typical 6am–2pm shift look like?

• What was the biggest surprise when you first started working as an HCA?

• What training did you receive before working independently, and did you feel it prepared you well?

• What skills or knowledge do you wish you'd had before your first shift?

• Roughly how many residents are you usually responsible for during a shift? (The care home has 20 beds)

• Do you generally have enough time to provide good care, or do you often feel like you're rushing?

• Would it be considered a reasonable request to ask if I could mainly work 6am–2pm shifts? I don't drive yet, and getting home after a 2pm–10pm shift would be difficult. I also wouldn't feel particularly safe relying on public transport that late.

• If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting their very first HCA job, what would it be?

• Finally, if you were interviewing for your first HCA role again, what question would you ask the interviewer that you didn't think to ask at the time?

I'm really excited about the opportunity and want to go into it with realistic expectations. Any advice, experiences, or tips would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!

Update: I got a interview!

You may (or may not) have seen my post where i vented i could not get a entry-level job in the care sector.

I got a interview at a local care home! And its above minumum wage (only by like £1 a hour, but we take ws where we can get them).

Persistance is key!

I will double crown her when i get the materials. The 5% overap on critrate is annoying but id rather be over than under and miss a crit.

The only thing i can think of is giving her a hp% circlet or try and get a flower/feather with both hp% and em.

I don’t really wear jewellery due to sensory issues, as well as worrying about accidentally damaging or losing something sentimental.

This is the most frustrating thing imaginable.

Applied for a care assistant role, they do not insta reject me, i smile, finally i think, they email asking when i can come in to speak to the manager, i give my days (literally any days but two). They email back, the manager is only available on , *oh* , the only two days i cannot do..

No biggie, i think as i continue my week (i am currently working two days as an apprenticeship but i want to get into care work), it slips my mind, then today i remember, oh *care home* hasnt got back to me, so i sent this email and yep they filled the role.

Surely if a candidate cannot do certian days, and for fairness to interview everyone, you try to work out a potential solution, or is that too nice of me.

I am autistic and i am not sure what sort of job(s) would suit me? (UK BASED).

Looking for career suggestions based on my interests, qualifications and needs :)

Sorry for the long post!

I'm trying to work out what career path would suit me, so I thought I'd ask here for suggestions.

What I'm looking for

- Part-time (maximum 3 days per week)

- Ideally early shifts (around 6am–2pm), but I'm flexible.

- Happy to start on minimum wage while I gain experience.

My interests

- Psychology

- Child Development

- Animal Care

- Religion, Philosophy & Ethics

- Criminology

Qualifications

GCSEs :

- Religious Studies – Grade 9

- History – Grade 8

- Combined Science – 8–7

- English Language – 7

- Mathematics – 6

- English Literature – 6

- Art – 5

- German – 4

Predicted Level 3s :

- BTEC Health & Social Care – Distinction*

- A Level Religious Studies – A

- A Level Criminology – B

I'm also open to studying for a BA through the Open University in the future if it would help my career.

Things to consider :

I'm autistic and have moderate to severe sensory sensitivities, with noise being the biggest challenge. I work best in environments that are:

- Predictable and well-structured

- Clear in their communication

- Consistent in their expectations

Transport

- Currently learning to drive.

- Probably won't pass my test within the next six months.

- Public transport or walking distance is preferred for now.

Work environment :

I'm comfortable with jobs involving blood, urine and faeces. Vomit is the only thing I really struggle with.

My ideal job would...

- Make a meaningful difference to people or animals.

- Let me use my interests and strengths.

- Offer opportunities to learn and develop.

- Have a supportive, respectful team.

- Provide a healthy work-life balance.

Does anyone have any career or job suggestions that might be a good fit based on this? I'd really appreciate any ideas, even if they're a bit outside the box. Thank you!

Can't even get an entry-level job in an "understaffed" sector.

I want to eventually work in mental health, so i thought working as a support worker/care assistant would be a great place to start, gets me in the door, i get experience ect. I also know these places are always looking for staff.

All the local care home/facilities rejected me... every single one, not even a interview. Then they relist a similar job the day after...

I have relevant qualifcations too. I just finished A level 3 in health and social care, which im predicted a D* (=A*) in.

I do currently have a role (Kennel assistant) but it is not what i want to do long term, and i would much rather do something in the mental health sector.

I applied for a role which i could technially get, as i have relevant qualfications (not a degree) , and its relevant to what i want to do.

Just felt like using reddit to scream into the void yk.

What is everyones primary/main safe food? Or just main meals in general.

Mines Pasta, Cheese, Chicken and Peas. This has gotten slightly better from my childhood plate of just Pasta and cheese.

The cheese isnt sauce,-like because i hate saucey pasta but literally just grated cheese. (Usually cheddar)

The chicken is usually Pakora or buttermilk chicken, sometimes garlic and herb. Its chopped up and put on the pasta, then the cheese is put on.

I have peas with it sometimes, but depends on the day.

I always have it on Mondays, and either on a Wednesday/Thursdays, depending on whats being cooked either day.

I could legit eat Pasta and cheese for all 3 main meals of the day ngl, but i try to have some variety in my diet.

My main meals pretty much is

Monday - Pasta

Tuesday - Pizza (Pepporoni

Wednesday - Wildcard (Chilli, Bologense or meatballs) or wildcard

Thursday - Pasta (or wildcard)

Friday - Chicken OR Fish , Chips and Peas/rice.

Saturday - Chicken Tikka Curry

Sunday - Sunday Roast with NO GRAVY (my hatred for gravy is very deep).

How i feel when my manager said everyone at my new job likes me but i was masking the whole time.

Pretty much the title, started a new job and my manager (who knows im autistic btw) was saying everyone likes me and thinks im chill. What she doesnt know is that ive been masking (including supressing my stims) so idk how to feel.

I dont really talk but everyone seems fine with that because im generally friendly if someone does ask me something or tells me what to do ( eg : supervisor tells me what i need to do).

Anyone else had a similar experience??
