If this isn’t sorted will we also be striking the 21st of October as well as the 14th? Saw something online. I’m with ASTI.

LC/senior cycle prep?

NQT here. I find I am sticking to my SOW with LC’s but I am only a couple of pages ahead of them, no more. I have to make sure I prep everything for LC’s just incase there is something I’m not sure about. Is this normal for NQT year or should I be more organised/knowledgeable ?

Inspections ?

Just wondering what is the various notice given for inspections?
I know drive by’s are no notice given, and I think drive bys are for the whole school?
What about department, subject inspections? How much notice is given?
TIA

How to increase uptake in subject?

Would be grateful for any advice here, as I’m new in the school and numbers for my subject (language) are low.
Trying to make classes fun and varied especially for juniors.
Getting involved in extra curricular to develop rapport with kids across the school.
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Where to get learning outcomes for TY schemes of work?

Unsure to get them from JC or LC specification? Or maybe TY has subject specific ones? TIA

How long did it take you to settle into your school?

NQT, and feeling very overwhelmed at the minute and haven’t started teaching yet. Any advice? If I was starting back into a school known to me I don’t think I’d be half as overwhelmed.
Don’t want to spend the whole weekend stressing about it school either.

How do you cope with back to school anxiety?

It’s my NQT year, starting out in a brand new school. How do you cope with the back to school anxiety? I was fine until this weekend when I heard what I was going to have etc. I remember the same anxiety going back last year but that was in my PME.

What has genuinely made a difference to your mental wellbeing?

I find myself being really thankful for my gym these days, especially on days where I’m extra anxious.

Questions as NQT

These are probably silly questions but does each teacher get a laptop to use from the school?
Also wondering if the schemes of work from the previous teacher will be sent onto me so I know where I can pick up from?
Do schools give out academic diaries/planners or do we get them ourselves?
TIA!

Tips for an NQT on 22 hours? (Post-primary)

Hi everyone, I’ll be starting into a 22 hour contract at the end of the month. I’ve heard the NQT year is a baptism of fire. Is it? Would also be grateful for any tips to keep my head above water.
TIA

Also just wanted to say this sub is a really nice community and I have used it numerous times over the past few years for advice or general questions! Thank you ❤️

Where is best to learn about Irish finances?

I have read Eoin McGee's book "How to Be Good with Money", but find an awful lot of the literature is very americanised. I am looking to learn specifically about Ireland. My knowledge all things Revenue is very poor. I think this is largely because of the old Irish stereotype and my family getting awkward around discussing money. I didn't even know you could get 1k back on rent until earlier this year when a friend told me. I wasn't renting myself anyways, but still.

Any recommendations around anything I mentioned above would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Planners

Hi all.

I am starting my first job the end of August. Do schools provide a planner?

If they don't, maybe someone can share their recommendations for a planner? 9-block timetable preferable.

TIA :)

Edit: secondary school!

Recommendations for easing into CBT

I have gone to therapy/counselling before and found it helpful. However, I seem to struggle with thoughts about things I cannot control such as others actions and catastrophising. I want to begin to ease into CBT myself (I am not currently in therapy). From research, it looks like the book Mind over Mood would be a good place to start. Any opinions or advice would be appreciated. TIA

I have only had one intimate partner due to being demi. Starting to wonder if it will happen again for me

My ex was the only person I have ever been intimate with and in love with. It’s been a few years since we broke up and I’ve dated but haven’t found anything even similar to the connection. Any advice on how to find it/how to go about finding a connection like that again? I worry I won’t :(

12k in savings. What to do?

26, beginning my first adult job as a teacher in September. I have 12k in savings and have been living at home for the past few years.
What do I do with this money? I am hoping to buy a house in the next few years. Travelling is also a priority for me. I have nothing invested.
Any advice is appreciated. TIA.

I would also consider myself pretty decent and strict with money. I usually put whatever I can into my savings when I get paid.

I think I have been underpaid, do I contact the school or the department?

I was subbing in a school for the month of May. I am pretty sure I have been underpaid about 10 hours. I thought the pay was delayed and they might spread it out over summer but I didn't get a payslip yesterday. Who do I contact?
