Feeder mice vent

I want to start this rant off by saying I am not against feeder mice morally. I've owned reptiles, and am not insufferable to the point I apply human morals to animals a part of the food-chain.

Nonetheless, I think some of these reptile breeders have drifted off the point of no return in the way they treat their mice. I recently got two new fancy mice from a reptile expo, and it took me nearly 15 minutes to find a single mouse that wasn't exhibiting signs of a URI, barbering, extreme stress, or eye infection. What irks me is not only were these mice in horrid conditions, but also that the people were marketing some mice with certain coat-types as 'fancy'. This well-known in my area company was claiming to be breeding show-types. I hate to spoil it, but they were not. I didn't go into a reptile expo expecting to find any type of mouse besides the standard short-coat black, white, or brown coated feeders, but I unfortunately glanced at the three ten gallon tanks they had set up and saw my two little girls following one another around, clearly bonded to the nines.

TW

To paint a picture of the abomination I was looking at, there were three ten gallon aquariums lined up side by side as the company's front row display. This part doesn't seem to crazy without context, but I was at a reptile expo, and you'd think a reptile breeder would show off leucistic ball pythons crammed into deli containers like the rest of the booths before displaying a bunch of stressed out mice front and center. Anyway, I walked up to the table and noticed that in two tanks were strictly feeder-types, and in one other there were both feeders and fancies. I stupidly sent my attention to the tank with fancies within, mostly because all of my girls' coats are the common black, brown, and blondish and I appreciate an uncommon pattern. Once the dead-eyed woman manning the table took off the lid of the tank for me, I immediately watched a male mouse target and vigorously chase another male until I intervened. That's right, apparently a stressed animal being injured by another stressed animal isn't cause for intervention until a customer looks at you crazy for it. The owner took out the aggressor, by the tail(shocker), and placed him in another, I'm sure just as filthy, tank I could not see below the table. The victim male mouse was already injured with multiple cuts and scabs along his ruffled white fur, and he hid in a corner for the rest of my time at the table. The tanks had an inch of soiled aspen, and plastic water bottles that had very clearly become porous with extensive time used, as I could tell by eyesight alone that there was some sort of biological film(algae?) on the sides of the bottles. There were about 15-30 mice per tank, every gender and age mixed together as if intact males don't actively target and often kill younger mice and other intact males.

I wasn't initially going to get any mice from this table, considering that I was only at the expo for taxidermy, and the fact that I have four girls at home who are set up just the way I want them to be. If you can tell where this is going, I caved and purchased two non-pregnant female mice from the table. I payed a 5$ uncharge each for the two seemingly healthy girls because they were technically fancies. How is it even allowed to call a mouse a fancy mouse if you aren't a breeder tracking the genetics of your mice? I'm not complaining about paying an uncharge, just about the audacity. Anyway, I asked a million questions with a straight face about health and potential pregnancy in my two new girls, because if you're marketing some of these mice as pets, ill bother you about them as if they're intended to be such.

The two lady mice are now in quarantine, and the worst of their condition is that one of them has early-stages conjunctivitis in one eye that I'm treating with a generic-brand antibiotic. Surprisingly, they're very social and required literally only one day of bonding to climb up on my hand.

To end this rant, I would like to say that every reptile breeder I've known in my adult life has been passionate about the care of their reptiles. You'd think that the very mice they're feeding these reptiles, which they care so much for, would be shown the same passion as an extension of a reptile's life cycle. It's not like I'm even the most sympathetic person in the world, sometimes animals get eaten and that's the way the world works. But seriously, even as a person who's literally going into a career that requires compartmentalization of the neglect of living beings, I fully understand just how wrong the mice in the reptile industry are being treated.

To ease the inevitably helpless mood we'll have in the comments, I'll attach pictures of my new rescue babies. Give your thoughts, please, because I haven't heard a peep on this thread about the welfare of mice in the reptile industry and would like to know if there's people out there that think like me.

Any Advice on Terramycin?

Disclaimer: Not asking for medical advice, just want answers for a product.

I have a vet appointment that is one week and three days out, and one of my girls has an eye infection in one eye. I’ve looked at generic ointments on Amazon with the same active ingredient, but have found no information about the effect on mice specifically. I’m aware it is best to wait for a vet, but my girl’s eye is getting worse by the day and I would rather try a generic brand and potentially prevent further damage before making a trip to an emergency vet around 100 miles away.

TLDR: Any guidance from owners who have administered a generic ointment for Terramycin needed. Thank you!

Do my new girls look healthy?

DO NOT GIVE MEDICAL ADVICE, JUST CURIOUS ON NEXT STEPS AND WHAT IS EXPECTED OF MOUSE BEHAVIOR.

DISCLAIMER: The tank you see in the back of some photos is a temp enclosure for quarantine. Also I’m not against feeder mice, snakes have to eat, too. I’m against the condition they were in.

POSSIBLE INBRED

For context, I recently bought two female mice from a reptile expo. I know, I know, was a bad idea in the long run due to risk, but the sheer neglect these babies were in was too much for me to take. There were three 10 gallons set up across the table, one filled with about 20 feeder mice of all sex’s and ages, and two more identical setups mixed with both feeder mice and ‘fancy mice’. I spent 10 minutes picking out the two healthiest, non-pregnant girls. It took me so long because I witnessed symptoms of URI’s, extreme stress, and possible eye infections. Nonetheless, I brought two brown spotted girls home and was completely oblivious to the squinting(😭). I’ll break it down picture by picture.

Photo 1: girl #1, the better looking one of the two health wise. She was not squinting in any photos due to being out of quarantine and in a play pen for the photo shoot, but I have witnessed facial expressions identical to the last photo, photo 6.

Photo 2: girl #1. My concern here is that both girls have what looks like ruffled fur. I imagine that they had poor hygiene in their previous ‘home’, but I do know that ruffled fur can be a symptom of other health issues.

Photo 3: girl #1. Not squinting, but give me a posture check on her please because spinal hunching is a big worry of mine.

Photo 4: girl #2, the slightly less healthy looking of the two. I don’t own any white-faced mice, so could you tell me if the pink next to her eyes and nose is normal? When looking overhead, her left eye appears to be slightly smaller or more squinted than her right. Genuinely have no clue why, because from an overhead view it’s apparent, and a side view isn’t.

Photo 5: girl #2. Same kind of smaller appearance in her left eye, which is actually on the right if you’re face to face with her in the photo. Once again, the ruffled fur makes an appearance. This photo shows the pink of her face more clearly, and I’m worried that this means they have pink eye or something.

Photo 6: girl #2. This picture was taken through the foggy wall of their quarantine cage, but this is what both girls look like pretty much all the time when not curious about something. The squinting stops when they see me, or when they pay attention to anything other than eating, really.

To recap, my main concerns are eye infection, or other physical symptoms of an illness. The girls’ suspected ruffled fur may be due to a mix of poor genetics from their parents, who were one shorthair and the other longhair. I suspect that the lady at the expo was just bsing me, though, because ungroomed fur is an indicator of a health concern.

My questions are as follows:

Is the pink by their eyes and nose normal for white-faced mice?

Is the fur a concern?

Do you think it is safe for me to begin the introduction process between these two and my other mice?

Should I consult a vet? If so, about what?

How dire is their appearance?

PACNWRS Reptile Expo Line?

If anyone’s in line at the door for tickets into the reptile expo, how busy is it looking? Trying to decide if the 9 bucks for the online fee is worth it.

Dust Sensitive Mouse Bedding Alternatives?

As the title says, I have a very dust-sensitive girl that was showing early signs of a URI due to, assumingely, the aspen bedding in the enclosure. I say this as an educated guess because I quarantined her to check for signs that her environment was causing the symptoms (coughing and sneezing) to show up. Turns out that when put into an enclosure with paper only bedding, which was all I had on hand for the quarantine, her symptoms stopped completely within one day. I did multiple trials with all paper bedding as well as my preferred 90% aspen, 10% paper bedding mix. The coughing and sneezing only returns when she's in the aspen. For now, I have switched my entire four mouse enclosure to all paper, but am looking for 0% dust alternatives to paper as I'm well aware that it does not control ammonia. I don't prefer to clean their enclosure every day apart from spot cleaning, so any alternatives that help control ammonia that you found worked would be very appreciated.

Temp Cage Critique Please

I am aware that paper bedding is not proper, and am going to get some aspen today.

This is a 20 gallon setup until later today when I get the 43 gallon. Fabric on the branch leading up to the climbing DIY(😭) is a cotton shirt for grip since I’m unsure what to use to apply some sort of grip to the branch for access. I did see one of the girls nibbling on it when I put it in last night, but she seemingly was just curiously testing it and did not take any fabric off and has not continued. I will gladly remove the fabric I just need an alternative to help with their traction since that was the issue with the branch.

Wheel is definitely more than 8 in.

Will be adding another water bottle into the new enclosure today and switching to a pellet diet not containing a mix of other items.

I tried to put as much clutter in there as I could manage with household items. More specifically, there is 3 toilet paper/paper towel tubes beneath the surface, 5 hides leading into tunnels with scattered food for enrichment, a mix of spray added to the bedding and tops of climbing structures, and some larger pieces of paper(both crumpled and loose) within the top layer of the bedding. (I know, the 20 gallon was not ideal for the first two days of ownership, but was all that was on-hand)

I’m choosing to take it as a good sign that I haven’t seen the 4 ladies at all today, which is like four hours so far.

I also would like to ask, is it normal for one within the colony to stay awake while the rest sleep. I googled it, and it said that this may be a guarding of sorts? I did notice that the girl staying up to watch over the surroundings is assumingely the ‘leader’ amongst them. She’s gotten into two territorial disputes last night, has groomed two of the other girls, and has always been the first to test out a structure before it’s added to their routine.

If my setup is not appropriate in any way, besides the items that I’ve listed, please let me know. Definitely will be adding more enrichment with the bigger space, but those’ll most likely just be repeats of the stuff I’ve already added into this temp one. Any ideas?

UPDATE: Deceased Orange Cat found on Royal Avenue

Adding pictures to this of when he was alive. So idk if you guys remember the post I made about two weeks back, but all in all I was searching for the owner of a shorthair orange kitty that was the victim of a bad hit to the head from a car. With the advice of some of the people from the comments of that original post, I cross posted the story to West Eugene Facebook groups in hopes that this kitty’s poor owners would see it and have some sort of closure knowing that their pet isn’t missing, which is incredibly scary to think about.

Anyways, his owners got back to me!! Orange kitty Scout was found not even five minutes after I’d left the area to post a note on the bulletin board of the local neighborhood, and he was discovered by his owner of all people. His amazing owner carried him home and took great care handling the ending to a too-short life. To give a little background as to what Scout got up to when he was still here, it turns out he has run across Royal Ave quite often, and is a stray that his owners(mother and son) took in.

He made such a big impact on my life, and what I know I’m here to do as a person. I’m glad I knew baby Scout for the short amount of time that I did, even if it was painful for the both of us. Rest in peace Scout, hopefully there’s many trees to climb and roads without cars to run across wherever you’re going after this.

Please keep your cats inside, for the love of your babies as well as the people that will pull over to be with them in such an unfair moment.

Can I legally be taken to collections as a minor?

For context, I’ve been sent a letter from Harvard Collection Services LLC for around $2k for a medical debt my mother paid from our insurance when the bill came out in 2025. I haven’t called Harvard Collections yet as I just received the letter earlier this evening as of 7/19/2026.

The date they provided was in December of 2025 when I was still 17(my 18th birthday was in April of 2026). Even if they up and decided to take me to collections when I turned 18, I am still a dependent of my mother as of this tax season into April of 2027.

Is this legal? What’s my next course of action? Do I go to my state? Can they affect my credit if I don’t even have a credit score?

Deceased shorthair orange tabby cat hit on N Terry and Royal Ave.

I doubt you’re on Reddit but just in case you are I wanted to leave this here. I was driving down N Terry Street just passed the intersection of Royal Avenue and watched a large grey truck hit your beautiful orange kitty and drive off.

I pulled over and sat and cried with the cat as they put up one hell of a fight for their life. They didn’t die alone, and I made sure to stay and reassure them as they drifted off to sleep.

I left a note on the Daneland home park’s bulletin board because the incident occurred right in front of the home park. If you don’t find the note but find this post please dm me and I can call you if you need someone to talk to.

I’m so sorry
