I’m so sick of receiving print-on-demand editions when I buy new books

I recently ordered all three volumes of Peter Weiss’s novel The Aesthetics of Resistance from Thriftbooks. All three of them arrived as cheap, pulpy, print-on-demand editions from Lightning Source LLC, the bane of my book-collecting existence. Even worse, Volumes I and II are printed on acid-free paper, so they‘re pure white, while Volume III is not, so its pages are bronze.

Since these were published by Duke University Press, I assumed they had legit printings. And since they were only available new, they were $25 each. I paid $75 for books that won’t hold together for one reading, let alone a lifetime of ownership. In my view, these POD editions are no different than bootleg rips of CDs or DVDs, and they should not be sold without some kind of disclaimer.

Selling a Saturation era View-Master with photo wheel

I won this in 2017 from Ashlan Grey’s Instagram giveaway. Still love the band, but I’m sure somebody else will appreciate it more than me. Thanks for looking.

Free Book Rewards only last two weeks now? Are you kidding me?

They used to keep your Free Book Rewards for THREE MONTHS, but now you lose them after only two weeks? I just logged in today to use one and saw that it expired yesterday. I’m also a Literari Elite member, which means I’ve spent $250+ this year… and this is how they treat me. I hate seeing this company become so awful.

Sunday USPS drop-off locations?

Hi all! I tried to do my due diligence with a Google search but couldn’t find any answers. Does anyone know of a business around town that accepts USPS package drop-offs on Sundays? Trying to get something shipped today to avoid having to fight traffic after work tomorrow. I used to use Ruth Hunt but they lost their USPS partnership.

Selling one of my Against the Day first edition hardcovers

SOLD! Thanks for your interest, everyone! If you haven’t read this one, I highly recommend it.

Hi, all! I‘m selling one of my copies of *Against the Day* to clear up some shelf space, and I figured somebody here might be interested. (Unfortunately I had to admit that, no, I don’t need three copies of the same book, even if it is probably my favorite.) This copy is unread and damn near Like New.

Asking $50, since that’s what eBay recommended based on recently sold listings. Venmo would be great, but it’s also listed on eBay, if you’d rather go that route. I’ll cover shipping if you go through me directly!

Sorry in advance if this kind of post is not allowed — I’m not active here, but I didn’t see anything in the rules about selling. Thanks!

1st edition, 3rd printing of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1962)

Asking $250, which is average for the Sold listings (eBay‘s algorithm actually recommended pricing it higher). I’ll cover shipping!

The link to the eBay listing is just for my convenience. I’d be happy to take a unique ”verification” pic if you’re interested. Thanks for looking!

Has anyone received the new printing of ASM: Venom yet?

Last week, ASM: Venom showed as in-stock on several major book sites, including Penguin itself, but my own order from Thriftbooks hasn’t updated in over a week. They’re usually very efficient about order updates, so I’m just wondering if anyone has actually received the new printing yet. None of the sites list a new publication date or specify that the new printing would be a preorder, which implies the book is already stocked and ready to go. Hopefully this wasn’t a false alarm!

My vintage Robert McCammon haul today!

As much of a book snob as I am, I still love collecting vintage horror alongside literary stuff.

Am I crazy or was this chat representative totally incompetent?

Background: I have been stuck at Bookworm status for a week, despite passing the $150 threshold for Literati status. I tried asking for help in the ThriftBooks app’s chat, which turned into a fiasco. The entire conversation took an hour and a half, which is ridiculous by itself, and all I got were some nonsensical copy-paste responses.

So far in 2026, I’ve made five orders. One was refunded and another is currently a preorder, both of which I know don’t count towards ReadingRewards status. In addition to those orders, though, I have made three separate orders totaling $151.25 before taxes and shipping. These have all been delivered, with no refunds or anything. Obviously, this basic math means I should be in the Literati status now, but Jaida kept ignoring the proof I gave her, which included my order numbers and their totals. I have no idea where she got $147.16 from in the first place, because that doesn’t match my orders any way you add them up, and it doesn’t match the total I was told by another representative over email a few days earlier.

Normally I wouldn’t be upset about this, but as a Bookworm I can only redeem Free Books under $6.00, and I have several in my cart right now that are around $6.80, which I need Literati status to get for free. As you know, prices fluctuate a lot once you add books to your cart, so I’m trying to claim these before they increase or get sold. I’m mostly flabbergasted that I presented verifiable proof that I’ve spent $151.25, even exclusing shipping and taxes, but this chat representative completely ignored me and gave me some BS response.

Question: should a work of art mentioned in the text be used for the cover?

I’m currently reading Basic Black with Pearls, which is fantastic. However, even before I started reading it, I thought the cover art was an odd choice. A nurse (or flight attendant?) with no right hand? It’s not bad, but I don’t think it works for this novel.

Lo and behold, on page 54 the narrator visits a museum and sees the painting Marchesca Casati by Augustus John (second photo). Would that not have made a much better cover? The narrator contrasts herself with this “independent, dramatic, seductive” woman, so while it doesn’t represent the narrator herself, it does represent what she wants to be — which is the journey of the novel, the narrator gaining her independence from her secretive, elusive lover.

Do you like it when covers are intentionally unique from the book, or do you think they should make an attempt to use the same work(s) mentioned by the author?

Early delivery from Thriftbooks!

I’ve ordered dozens of books from them before, but this was my first time preordering a graphic novel. Their packaging was frighteningly bad (paper-thin cardboard, even worse than their usual cellophane bags) but somehow it survived!

Speeds are unusable now

I’ve been using Nord for about four years. It has always worked great for me, until a couple weeks ago. Now it is so slow — no matter which located I’m connected to or which WiFi connection I’m on — that it’s unusable. I can’t even download a 5MB file without it timing out, and video playback is out of the question. What the hell happened? I don’t think this is user error.

Recent additions to my collection

Joint eBay and Half Price Books finds. I’ve only read Books of Blood 1 & 5 and The Thief of Always so far, but I’m slowly collecting everything.

Let’s talk about Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 7

I was just looking at the Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 7 omnibus and noticed that the new ASM Epic Collection, “Spider-Man: Threat or Menace,” has practically the same issues: ASM #207–223 and Annual #14–15. The only difference is that the omnibus also includes ASM #206, Marvel Treasury Edition #25, and some What If? material.

I think this indicates two major problems. First, Epic Collections are severely overpriced. (This one‘s MSRP is $54.99!) Second, the last several numbered ASM omnibuses have been too barebones. Even though this one has a lower price (MSRP $100), it still only includes the content equivalent of an Epic Collection. Does Marvel think we’re a bunch of idiots or what? Is this really the most effective publishing strategy they could come up with, an extra $45 if you want the hardcover? I know we all hate Marvel in this sub, but it bears repeating. Who is making these stupid decisions?
