Looking for games that would run well on a medium end laptop offline.

Basically the title I guess. I’m not much of a gamer. I have a medium end laptop that is not meant for gaming. I’m taking my laptop somewhere were the internet connection will likely be bad and I’ll have a bit of time with nothing else to do, so games seemed worth a shot at least.

Working with 16GB DDR5 (soldered), an iGPU, and a newish Intel 5 Ultra something or other CPU. I don’t want anything too graphics intensive (I don’t care much about graphics over the story). I really don’t care if it runs under 60fps or at 720p or anything, as long as there isn’t a major lag.

Currently have a few games installed such as Minecraft and Genshin Impact. I’d be interested in anime games, space games, the like. Not very much into visual novels though I’ll do it if I’m really bored. Preferably don’t want to spend too much money (or system resources) on the games. Especially looking at Steam games, and Linux native games would be nice as I’m using CatchyOS. Windows games may or may not run, and anything with kernel malware anticheat is basically guaranteed to fail.

I’m just done with Windows

This isn’t all about Windows, but it is related.

I made a post on r/FuckMicrosoft with some major pain points I have with Windows. Windows 11 is borderline unusable without mods. The modding community was basically the only thing keeping me on Windows. And guess what? Now the modding community sucks too.

The people developing Windhawk are great, and they make great mods. Issue is that there’s a limit to what Windhawk can achieve.

So I decided to join a couple Discord channels, and with it I got some really good setups. And now there’s a fight brewing and I want nothing to do with it. Both sides seem in the wrong and I’m not going to be the one to decide. Issue is they were one of the few things that would have kept me on Windows.

So I’m just done. I installed Linux a few weeks ago, hopefully this time it’ll stick. I’ll keep a Windows VM for whatever rare thing I’ll need and maybe install Windows on actual hardware if some proctored test requires it. But I really have no desire right not to go back to Windows. I am done with any modding or the like I’ve done.

Thank you, Microsoft, for your predatory practices and for making an OS that no one wants to actually use without needing a complete install overhaul from ten different third party sources. Thank you Windows modders for your predatory practices (in a different way), and for not being able to keep your loli hentai and your “kys” messages to yourselves. A decent thing isn’t worth it if the community sucks. And Windows isn’t decent, so if the community sucks the consequences are worse.

Obviously Linux isn’t perfect. Its community has issues too. But theres more choice and you don’t have the same ten of fifteen names on everything, causing multiple arguments over the exact same stuff, over and over. I’ll consider coming back when Windows is usable again and the community can figure itself out. I’m not trying to use or push Linux just to be better than the Windows users or whatever, but because it will simply be more fun than Windows and unfortunately I don’t feel like buying a MacBook to try within under a year of buying a new laptop that, aside from Windows, is still perfectly usable.

I need somewhere to crash out because Windows is trash!!!

This is going to be quite a rant, sorry about that. I thought when I went to Linux I wouldn’t have to deal with much from Windows, but no.

So my brother got a new laptop and it arrived yesterday. It was his first time setting up a new laptop, and I had to leave in the afternoon. So in the morning I go to create a Windows VM to show him setup. Only to find that the ISO is over 7GB!!! Like what the hell? It used to be 3, maybe 4GB. 7+GB is insane!

Then to speed things up I decide to use the new setup version. Oh boy was that a mistake. At least three or four extra pages more than the old version, when it’s actually installing you only see a percent and have no clue what’s going on, and it seemed slower than usual. The old version of setup is what I’ll be using from now on. But okay, that’s not a big issue.

Then the OOBE. It’s slow, and literally spends half an hour on updates if you don’t click or don’t see the skip button. There’s the standard get to know the system stuff… except does it actually tell you how to use the system? Of course not! It just recommends MS Office. And copilot. Then attempting to set up a local account… now I did that on a VM easy enough because I just disconnect the Ethernet adapter in the menu. I totally forgot to mention that when the actual laptop comes to not connect to WiFi immediately. So then I had to try to troubleshoot from halfway across town from my phone. Eventually we had to give up and just use the MS account.

Now here’s the thing: the MS account would be useful for him. So why was I so against it? Because some genius at Microsoft thought “not only should we force a Microsoft account, we should make that account which possibly has all of the user’s payment methods, purchases, important documents, etc…, the FUCKING ADMIN ACCOUNT. And what’s wrong with that? UAC is a FUCKING JOKE. And because I know someone will be like, “Well Apple does that too,” hold that thought because I’m going to explain the issue.

macOS, Linux, literally just about any non-Windows OS? They’re UNIX based. Now here’s the thing. In UNIX, you have one account called root that has full access to the machine, and all other accounts are standard accounts that no matter how you cajole the system you cannot give them admin permissions. So whenever you run something as an admin there, you’re actually running it in a different user account. And there’s no easy way to bypass this. Sudo or GUI elevator are designed to be the only paths a standard application can use to access the root account short of having root’s password, and bypasses to those are taken very seriously (I know the no password option exists in sudo, but it still has to be configured and has to go through sudo). I mean yes, you can install some service that auto elevates something, but that’s user installed still and the installation will still have to go through the root account somehow.

On Windows an admin account is an admin account no matter what. When operating in standard mode, certain features and calls require UAC. But half the shell is still running in admin mode, and half the programs are set by Microsoft to auto elevate. It is trivial to hook into Explorer somehow and run a program as admin without ever asking the user. And MS has themselves said that UAC is not a security feature but a convenience feature. Therefore they won’t fix issues until it’s a standard account getting admin without permission. Now ten years ago it was pretty common advice that you should have an admin account you only use when needed and a standard account for daily use, even if you’re the only user. But thanks to the online accounts that doesn’t happen much these days. Then there’s the fact that certain settings pages literally cant be opened on standard accounts because they don’t show UAC and you can’t open UWP apps as another user. And I know it’s mostly because some people complained in 2007, but there really should be at least a yes/no prompt for any admin activities, and those that have to auto elevate need to be protected from other processes latching on to become an admin.

Okay, and after all this I’m at the desktop. First thing you see? A start menu full of apps you never installed. In fact, the system hasn’t installed them yet either. And you click on one and it autoinstalls without even asking permission. Notifications for game pass, and OneDrive… Edge is hard to get rid of or make it not the default browser. You set another browser as your default, and search results still open in Edge/Bing (the fact they’re there in the first place is it’s own thing, but we’ll ignore that for now).

Now I would have just given him Linux and been on my way, but he still has that one app that won’t work on Linux like so many people. Also he’s not the fiddle around if it’s working kind of person. But he has shown interest in trying Linux at some point though. Though I’m not expecting him to ever daily drive Linux, the fact that he’s said he wants to try it shows just how bad Windows is.

And guess what? I’m going to have to go through this again in a few days probably. We’re getting my sister a laptop. The current one we’re looking at is Dell, and I’ve already been asked to help get rid of all the Dell bloatware. My best response? Clean install Windows. Would have got her the MacBook Neo but she needs a touch screen. And she is honestly not great with computers so while I want to just throw on Linux, that unfortunately won’t work.

So there. Rant done. Windows is about to make me lose my sanity. I miss the days when it just worked.

Very weird question, but does anyone know a decent Edge UWP theme for Firefox-based browsers?

I honestly liked the idea of Edge UWP and I personally don't like the Chromium based Edge at all. Does anyone know of a decent userCSS theme that works with modern-ish Firefox browsers?

Had the misfortune of using Edge and the new design is terrible.

Like, who thought “hmm, we need to make Edge look like Copilot”?! Now I’m all for modern designs and rounded corners, but this is too rounded off and honestly the entire Copilot design looks cheap, not gonna lie. I miss Windows 7 when they knew how to design apps.

What happened is, I upgraded from Windows 11 to 10 (yes, it was an upgrade). Unfortunately because it’s *technically* a downgrade I couldn’t keep any settings or apps. So I had to use Edge. Honestly I was going to keep Edge, and just use a flag to… not go with the rest of Windows 10s design but at least make it look a little less like Chrome. But they got rid of whatever flag I had used previously, and I cannot for the life of me find any setting or flag to just go back to the standard design for Windows 11. Why does it have to look like Copilot!?

Anyways, if anyone has a way to disable the look or a browser recommendation that fits with the Windows 10 design, I’d love to hear it.

Can someone explain the K-On fans are racist thing?

I am a bit annoyed with seeing all the “K-on fans are racist” memes and the fanarts that make them Nazis. How on earth does a cute show like K-on become that? I’ve done a bit of research and found a few things, but I’d kinda like to find out what actual fans think.

This isn’t really even meant to be political or anything, just honestly curious why such things get brought into a show so unrelated.

Is there any good image of the Office 2007 background?

So weird question I know. But in office 2007 there was a gradient image behind the active document. It's kind of a light blue into a darker blue, and i assume it was there to make the empty space less empty. Any idea where I could find an image of it to set as the background of another app? I rather like the look.

Opinions on different OS installers?

So this is something I’ve been thinking about recently: the difference between the installers in different OSes. And I honestly am interested in all your thoughts and opinions on it. Heres what I see:

Linux installer widely vary. Arch or Gentoo of course are notoriously hard. But really most distros, especially beginner friendly ones, offer decent installers. In fact, these are some of the best installers out there imo. You get a live environment to try out the system before even installing. Then you have the installer on the desktop. Just right there waiting, not forcing you to use it. The installer itself is laid out like a typical app, and it fits with the system and is descriptive. The downside though is that there are many options, and some distros really are a pain to install.

Compare that to Windows. People who think they understand computers are lost when they come to the Windows installer. And honestly I don’t blame them. It is not really user friendly at all.

First theres the color scheme. Honestly the deep blue makes it look dark and a little foreboding. The UI is basically three different designs at once. The instructions are there, but they aren’t the best. Also worth noting that nothing really is configured until after the install, when you have to deal with the terrible OOBE. I honestly think they could do a lot simply by adding a bright Windows 11 bloom image as the background of the installer and modernizing it.

Then there’s macOS… it takes literally forever to install. Longer than Windows 11 OOBE, which I honestly didn’t think possible. On the flip side I do like that it comes with recovery tools in the same place, and that it does allow you to reinstall over internet without needing a full installation disk, something the others don’t allow. Also its recovery tools include a browser, which I honestly think would be something that Windows should add to recovery mode.

None of them are perfect, but I think especially Windows could take an update. Welcome new users, make it bright and joyful. Don’t make it look like something that they need to pay a technician to do… oh wait… I think I just came across the answer as to exactly why they won’t do that…

How does Aqua not purify wine when she drinks it?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. But from what I understand any liquid she touches gets purified, whether she means to or not. That would make me think that any contact with her would have it purified. So why wouldn’t wine? She can turn tea to water, so I don’t think wine would be that much harder.

For that matter, what about all the frog slime from the first volume/season? Now the first fight she might not have had the skills, but I would think frog slime would be mostly water, meaning she could purify it in later fights… idk though, maybe I’m missing/overthinking something.

He’s suing OpenAI because they became a for profit company soon after he left the board. Whine whine bitch and moan I guess…

I have no love for OpenAI, but Musk is worse. He suing for a billion dollars in damages, which he says he’s going to give right back to them… that is the non profit version of them that’s still basically them. But that doesn’t matter.

Because it’s going to probably count as another way to get around taxes (as if he didn’t already have plenty). So he’s get more money from it anyways. And he’s just pissed that not only are they competing with Grok, they’re winning against Grok.

That man doesn’t care about charity. He doesn’t really care if they’re for profit or not. He’s just butt hurt that his product is not doing as well and he’s not making money. As if he doesn’t have enough to end world hunger and still comfortably live for the rest of his Nazi life.

Basically the title. I’m attenpting to make a story based on the OS-tan. I don’t want to give too much away in case it doesn’t work out, but premise is basically them as idol groups. Mostly focused on Windows 11/Ichika Madobe for at least the first story, although I do want to make other stories too if this works out.

Issue is I’m not an artist, and I definitely don’t want to use AI. I’m looking for a decent fanart that I can use as a cover art because I don’t want to use someone’s art without their permission. Idea is if I do well enough it’ll go on Wattpad, and I’d like a cover art to go with it.

Also much like FOSS I’d like this to be a community thing, not just me selling a story so if anyone has ideas or wants to get involved I would be really interested in hearing from you.
