Super lost on what to do

Hi guys!

I’m 23 (F), and recently got a BScH in Animal Biology. I wanted to get into vet school but due to my inability to find “veterinary hours” for my vet school application, it’s on the back burner.

I’ve tried relentlessly for over 4 years to find a job at a vet clinic within an hour radius around where I live. Full-time, part-time, overnights, etc. I’ve also asked to volunteer. I cannot for the life of me find a position as a veterinary assistant, receptionist, or even find a spot for me to volunteer to gain these hours.

I have experience volunteering in wildlife rehab, on farms, and I even worked as a farm hand over the summer for a few years and I can’t find literally anything. My veterinarian dream is kind of withering away.

I’ve recently moved to Erin (small town near Caledon, Ontario) and it’s the exact same out here, yet I’ve been having more doubts than ever. I got a gig to work as a tree pruner at a big tourist farm, and after working there (relentlessly), I got almost completely ghosted after 2 weeks despite the farm owner opening up applications to hire highschool/college students soon. I have no idea what I did wrong, and it feels super scummy since the owner hired a bunch of immigrants (from an agency) to do the tree pruning work. I get if he couldn’t have me in now, but he’s been leaving me in the air because whenever I ask about hours etc., I get no response from him. Only about other inquiries such as when I get paid etc.

If this was a one off thing I’d feel a little better, but I recently had an interview at a vet clinic (which included a 3 hour long working interview) where the vet told me that she’d get back to me later that night, never did. I’ve been relentlessly calling this clinic for well over a week now, and miraculously, whenever I call they are “in a meeting” or “busy”. I also had a humane society call my number, leave me a message, and I’ve been calling them now for 4 days and nobody is getting back to me there either.

All minimum wage 17 dollars an hour, by the way.

These 4 years have made me incredibly tired and burnt out of getting these hours, or even finding jobs for that matter. I’m trying to find something paid right now while I figure out what I want to do (vet school, teacher’s college, etc.) and I’ve applied everywhere from humane societies to vet clinics to farms to pet stores and I can’t find literally anything where my degree would be relevant in the slightest. It makes me believe that there is an issue with me. My self confidence is at an all-time low, and I’ve been having a lot of fear that I will amount to nothing. I think about all those late nights studying, and for what? I’m seeing highschool kids end up at these places where I’ve been applying nonstop for years, and I’m stuck in this cycle.

Maybe a little bit of a vent, but I’m tired of recruiters not calling me back or even giving me any kind of communication. It makes me feel subhuman, and not worth anyone’s time. Why would you have me in your clinic for 3-4 hours if you aren’t even going to get back to me? It was such a waste of time. Why would you replace me with other people and not give me hours, a schedule, or literally anything to go off of?

Ugh. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. I’ve tried just walking in-person and handing in resumes, I’ve tried indeed, I’ve tried emails, I’ve tried calling. I thought I’d have more luck now that I’m out of school, but no. I don’t.

Game just came out, not getting many CCUs (20-40), 0% Playthrough Rate

Hi guys!!

Long time dev here, but haven't published a game in over 3 years (old school animal RPGs like Felandia, Sundown Island, etc.)

I recently released a cutesie wolf game where kids can make a wolf and learn fun facts about them, you can view it here: https://www.roblox.com/games/115660240004711/Wolf-Story

However, although the game is in early alpha, we're really struggling to get a playerbase. Right now, we can get about 40 CCUs from my Discord community, but we have 0 home page recommendations. I also spent ~35k on ads, and honestly, we haven't grown at all from those advertisements.

These are the stats.

Does anyone have any suggestions to increasing our CCUs? 3 years ago, I used to spend around the same amount on sponsorships and we'd get 400-500 CCU right off the bat.

Thanks!

Can’t find a job as a VA or receptionist for 4 years, am I missing something?

Hi guys! I’ve posted here before, but I (23F) have just recently graduated and got my degree in Animal Biology (BScH).

The goal was originally to get into veterinary school, and I worked my BUTT off these past 4 years. I think I graduated with around a 3.8 GPA.

However, I have looked every summer and year for a VA or receptionist position so that I can accumulate hours for vet school. I’ve also looked for volunteering, shadowing, etc. I literally can’t find anything. I’ve applied, in-person, everywhere within a 1.5 hour driving radius around Guelph (I’m in Ontario). I’ve also had probably over 30 interviews for positions, and for some reason, I can’t get one. It really makes me feel down on myself.

It’s so bad that I recently moved (with a BScH degree btw), and the only job that I could find even remotely close to my degree is a tree pruning job that pays minimum wage. It’s on a farm, so I hope that in a little while they allow me to actually take care of the livestock etc., but that’s how bad it is. I wanted to apply to vet school by this winter, but with no hours etc. I’m pretty convinced that isn’t happening.

It’s not that I have no animal experience either. I’ve volunteered wildlife rehab, farms, etc. I’ve even had a few summer jobs just giving alpaca tours and what not. I genuinely am not sure what to do at this rate, and I apologize for the rant, but as I’ve said before - it really makes me feel like I’ve wasted 4-5 years of my life chasing after this degree and dream only for it to literally be unattainable. I’ve made a lot of sacrifices along the way, one being putting off my online business that at the time made over six figures a year (nowadays, I’m lucky if it makes 1k a month, but we’re trying to change that around again :/). I think this will forever be one of my biggest regrets.

I’m not even attached to just GP either, I’ve tried large animal, etc. I literally can’t find anything. I have also tried networking in outreach clinics (a vet from my home town organizes them like once a year, and I go every year), and nothing. I even took on a job as a smaller vet clinic cleaner (she “created” this position for me to get around insurance liabilities…), and I would get everything on my list done within a few hours, so the owner of the clinic really struggled to find things for me to do. I ended up getting fired after literally 2 weeks because it was a “mistake on her end” and the “economy is bad.” She kept saying that she’d write me good references to get into other clinics etc., but was super against ever letting me shadow etc. I genuinely don’t know what is wrong with me to make her not want to do that.

But yeah, any advice? I am pretty much on my final straw. I wanted this for myself so bad, but now I feel stuck with the worst degree ever, 4-5 years of suffering to get straight As, and all my hard work and sacrificing entrepreneurship to be a tree pruner… It sucks.

BEd - commute?

Hi guys!

I live in Erin, Ontario with my BF and I’m just wondering if it’s possible to commute to this campus for teacher’s college? Google Maps says it’s about 50 mins, but is this doable everyday for the schedule of this program? Thinking of applying in 2027.

Thanks!

Vet School, Part-Time Semesters?

Hey guys!

Little bit of background info about me: I’m an Animal Biology student graduating from the University of Guelph soon!

I am asking whether or not veterinary schools (other than specific requirements like looking at past x full-time semesters etc.) care about whether you’re a part-time student?

For the past 2 years, I have been taking 4 courses a semester (vs. 5). This most recent semester, I took 3.

The reason for that is I wanted to prioritize getting the highest GPA I could for the Ontario Veterinary College. I found that five, although manageable to get 85%+ in, was not super manageable to get 90s in without sacrificing other aspects of my life. I do have a few semesters in there where I took five heavy courses with biochem, microbio, etc. but overall, I decided that four is more tolerable for me.

It is also worth mentioning that ontop of being a student, I own an online business and have paid for my entire undergraduate tuition out of my own pocket. And, honestly, I just didn’t find taking five courses for a lot of semesters was worth it when I had busier times with my business.

I’m also thinking of pursuing a semester or two after my degree where I just take 1-2 courses like organic chemistry and English so that I could possibly apply to American schools.

22F pre-vet student seeking advice

Hi guys!!

For some background, I (22F) took a 4 year Animal Biology, BScH degree, with the intention to apply to the Ontario Veterinary College. However, year after year, I’ve been struggling *hard* to get vet experience… I’ve heard ALL the reasons not to take volunteers; insurance reasons, no time, lots of vets to be at and we’re not the best clinic, etc. etc. Now I’m graduating and I want to apply for vet school by this winter, but I feel like I’m at such a loss. Every winter, summer, etc. I kid you not I call 100+ clinics, leave my resume, etc. (I have animal rehab volunteer experience and farm hand experience, and I also own a successful online business).

This summer, a vet in my super tiny home town wanted to give me a chance as a cleaner a few days a week (3 days). I said yes, given that I have literally no other options, but the job is what it is… cleaning. I have zero client interaction, I am not present for surgeries or in exam room etc., I just clean. I’m on my second week and I’m super bored, and I feel like my experience here will not satisfy vet school admission requirements.

I am honest and upfront with the vet. I want to do a good job, and I have been completing a lot of cleaning my tasks, but I feel like I’m not really learning a lot. She says that I can learn a lot just by poking around, reading posters, etc. I get it, but she also says that the reason why she hired me as a cleaner was because I had “no skills”. I just don’t understand how to build these skills when I’m not really trained or given the chance to learn them.

How do I get veterinary experience without being enrolled in vet school or becoming a veterinary technician? Am I missing something? I honestly feel like I’m going nuts. 🐿️

This experience has been so difficult that I’m literally thinking about just enrolling in vet tech school so that I can get vet experience… LOL. I know it’s a waste of time and money if the final goal is to become a veterinarian, but there’s no way I’m getting into vet school without the appropriate experience. My grades are decent (last 4 full time and pre reqs average out to a 92% for the OVC, 3.88 cgpa) , but my vet experience is pretty much nonexistent.

Hi guys!

A bit of background about me: I (22F) have recently begun the role of a veterinary cleaner at a smaller clinic in my home town (really small- one tech, one doctor, and a manager).

I figured that this would be a great way to start to accumulate veterinary hours for an Ontario Veterinary College application (I plan to apply by this winter).

However, I must say: I’m super bored. I know that it’s necessary to keep the place clean, especially in between examinations, but I’d like to learn more so that I can eventually become a veterinary assistant. I’ve only been there for a week, but they seem to have no intention on ever teaching me how to run labs, do inventory etc. (so that I can learn Avimark), or having me engage more with clients. I’ve been making the best of it and have been asking people questions, especially the veterinarian, out of interest - but I just got in-trouble with the manager for talking too much with coworkers? I don’t get it since it’s been a slower week and there really isn’t a whole lot to do, but I’m not only there to clean, I am there to learn and to take the experience to vet school apps.

I dunno, my assumption is that it’s too early and if I expressed interest in a few months, my answer might be different. But, it’s just a little disheartening since I almost actually got a veterinary assistant role a few weeks ago, and I would’ve had a lot more responsibility than sweeping and mopping all day.
