60s fibreglass felt

60s fibreglass felt

Hi there. I had my roof replaced and said the felt was fibreglass. My coworker said it would be bitumen and after doing some research, realised that it was made with asbestos. Do you think this looks like bitumen asbestos felt?

Thanks 🙏

Reroof with old tiles £20,500

Hi there. I think the title says it all. Normal 3 bed terraced house in south Wales.

I got this quote from this company that had many good reviews. I only wanted to know how much to repoint the chimneys and investigate a leak in the roof. He came to see the job.

Then he said:
A full roof replacement
Remove felt batten roof tiles ridge tiles  led work . Supply and fit new felt batten roof tiles ridge tiles fitted with a new dry ridge system . Repoint chimneys. Materials labour £17,000 for a full replacement.
Repoint and flaunch 2 chimneys fit back original led work and re-seal. £1,900 each plus vat. Replace fascia and grey gutters not down pipes. £3,200 plus vat. If you do decide you want work to start let me know and I’ll pop over an estimate for you. With the guarantee on and insurance which is 12 years. . No deposit required payment when complete. All waste removed.

We said we wanted to only do the chimneys and fascia/ gutters. All came up to about 8k.

When they were here they said the roof was very bad. Full roof replacement 17k, but as I said I couldn’t afford it, he said 14.5k reusing the old tiles.

They asked us to decide asap as they were already there and needed to know.

The invoice came and said 14.5k. Stupidly didn’t look and compare all the items in the list to the previous one. The stress of moving in, the works all overwhelming.

I asked for confirmation that £14.5k was the total and he said yes.

When the job was complete I paid the 14.5k. And he said - where’s the remaining 8k??

My heart sank. He had made 2 invoices with different things and I had agreed to both.

I’m confused and devastated. Also the roof looks ugly for the mix of new and old tiles. None of the quotes we had received were that high.

Managed to try to reason with him and got the price owed down from 8 to 6k.

I feel played. Please some kind words of comfort would be extremely appreciated at this point.

Edge sander help

Does anyone know why the sanding paper is burning on the outside and leaving burn marks on the floorboards?

Old floor insect damage fix?

Hi there! I found insect marks on a 100yo timber floor. After removing The old carpet layers found a lovely timber floor, but there are some very marked sections. The marks look superficial.

I’d like to find a way to cover them that I can oil over that will have a similar tone as the wood. Would a normal wood filler be appropriate for this type of job?

Any suggestions welcome :-)

Hiretech HT7 assembly help

Hi there, I just recently bought a used Hiretech HT7 and I’m not really sure in which way I should assemble the sandpaper. The person who sold the sander to me said that he thought there was a washer missing and that he had problems with a tiny pin that you can see at the base of the screw in the picture.

I can’t really figure out what that little pin is for. I watched a couple of videos on YouTube and they don’t mention the pin. Does anybody know?

I don’t feel comfortable using it until I know how to assemble it correctly. Many thanks.

Should I send off for testing?

Hi all. I’m renovating a house built in 1917 in Chepstow Wales so it has been renovated a couple of times, not sure when last but I would say early 2000 tops.

Pictures 1-4 seem to be the same type of “panel” stuck to the wall with a slight texture. They are in the utility room, and in a cupboard above the stairs. They have been painted over but image 4 shows the unpainted edges sort of grey.

Pictures 5-8 is after removing wallpaper and skirting boards I noticed some layers and don’t really understand if this could be asbestos. Does the wall cement or layers under look suspicious to you?

Pictures 9-10 is a white chalk like, crumbly material appearing on the edge between fireplace and wall after starting to rip out the wall paper around the chimney.

I bought a 4 sample kit, so I would appreciate if you could tell me which ones you would most concerned about (if any look suspicious).

Thanks a lot in advance and keep safe.

Are ants helping the little bugs or removing them?

Hi, this plant tends to get lots of little bugs. I normally wash them out, but recently I noticed a group of ants coming to hang out or eat them. Not sure what’s going on.

Has Farage got UK’s best interests at heart?

Since he seems to be a possible next PM, I’m here for you to show me the advantages. My problem is I cannot unsee the fact that:

- he would have taken us head first into the Iran war, and send us deep into a significant economic crisis.

- he took £5 million from a man with potential Russian links. Russia is behind the assassination attempts of our PM. No matter how much you dislike Starmer, surely the assassination attempt of our PM by foreign interests should outrage us all. He also did not declare this transaction, which makes it look like there’s something to hide.

- he was behind Brexit, and immigration and economy have significantly worsened since.

Help me understand please. I am open minded and welcome a respectful debate.

\- he took £5 million in Russian bribes, and Russia is behind the assassination attempts of our PM. He also did not give any details about this transaction, which means he is trying to keep it hush hush.
\- he was behind Brexit, and immigration and economy have significantly worsened since.

Surely I’m missing something or all that people would’t be supporting him. Help me understand please.

WFH and not giving a flying ****

I just struggle to care today more than ever. Pretending to care is so exhausting. At least when WFH I don’t have to look like I care. Strength to you all out there who are struggling to see the end of the shift. It’s Friday!!!!!
