I’d love some help deciding between the Canon G7X Mark III and the Sony RX100 VII.
My primary use will be travel photography (mostly national parks and cities) along with everyday shooting like with friends, cafes, food, portraits, etc.
I know these are considered two of the best point and shoot cameras, and I’m looking for something I can happily keep and use for years even though both are about 7 years old now.
For a little background, I have experience with Canon DSLRs, but that was about 10 years ago and I haven’t really picked any camera up since, so I kinda feel like a newb at this point. After handling both cameras, the G7X felt a little more intuitive in terms of button placement and ergonomics, which definitely seems like a plus. I’ve also heard it’s easier to get great results straight out of auto, although I know the photographer matters far more than the camera itself.
On the other hand, I keep coming back to the Sony because of its longer zoom range and electronic viewfinder. Both are huge advantages for travel, especially the EVF when shooting outdoors in bright sunlight.
A few questions I’d love answered:
For anyone who owns both: which one do you actually reach for more often, and why? Is the RX100 worth the extra couple hundred bucks for what I want it for?
If you only have one or the other: what makes you love it and is there anything that frustrates you about it?
Is there one camera you’d prefer to hand over to a stranger to get a great photo, or can I expect that with both?
Lastly, anywhere outside of Best Buy and B&H to buy one of these cameras? I see Willoughby’s and Abe’s of Maine pop up, but I just want to confirm whether or not they’re a reliable source.
I’d love to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly. I’m hoping to finally settle on one and place my order!
