Does this oven need replacing, or would repairs be sufficient?

There have been a series of malfunctions with our apartment stove. I'm going to be contacting the landlord, and I'd like to get an idea as to whether the entire stove needs replacing or if repairs would be sufficient. I wouldn't want the landlord to merely send someone for repairs, at the risk of an apartment fire in days, weeks, or months afterwards, if more malfunctions can be expected due to its age. I don't know much at all about stove or electrical. I'm coming here because I know many landlords opt out of necessary replacements for short-term financial gain, at the expense of tenant safety.

The series of events goes as follows, in order:

About four months ago, the cooktop light bulb wouldn't turn off, even when all elements were off. It's been on for four months straight. No big deal, right?

About two weeks ago I had heard some odd clicking behind/in the control panel, which I hadn't ever heard before with this stove. If I recall correctly, it had been mostly on the right side, maybe with a little bit on the left or center as well. I don't remember if this clicking had only happened while one of the burners was on or afterwards or both. This clicking persisted for 3-5 days, here and there (not always with the same element on, unless i'm mistaken). As far as I remember, the clicking might have been happening one day and then not the next day, and then again the following day. It could have been somewhat random.

If I recall correctly, the clicking had stopped, and a few days later I had placed a pot on the large front-left element and turned the knob to maybe an 8, 9 or max. Not unusual. About 10 seconds after turning it on with the pot on the element, there was an incredibly bright flash, which I've since learned might be called an arc flash due to short circuiting, followed immediately by a small flame. I had turned off the element instantly and removed the pot. The flame stopped.

Now, I don't think that there was anything stuck to the bottom of the pot or anything between the element and the pot, such as food. I didn't notice anything after inspection. As pictured, the element itself has corroded or combusted, or however you might refer to that. How do you refer to that, by the way?

Next, a few days after that, I had a kettle on the back right large burner with the knob set to 9 or max. This is how I've gone about it for the past three years of living here, so once again nothing out of the ordinary there. After the water had boiled, I removed the kettle. I turned off the knob, only to find that the burner, the element, stayed at the consistent really bright red-orange and the consistent heat of being on high. It wasn't lessening, and it wasn't stopping. The element wasn't turning off. I turned the knob back on and off again a few times to no avail until eventually that did work, but the element had stayed on for about 30-45 seconds on its own.

I'm concerned that this oven might be getting old and that it just needs a replacement. Though maybe repairs are sufficient. I'd love some advice.

Too, if anyone wants to educate me on some of the processes here, meaning what's happening and how these things go about happening and the fixes needed, I'd be grateful, as that would make it easier for me to communicate the processes further in the future, as well as have a better understanding as to how to fix this on my own (if I were to ever move into my own house) or what requests to make in the future. Thanks!

Steamers: garment/wet vs dry-vapour — concerns + seeking guidance!

First, I'll mention I know I have access to the internet and I know I have access to Reddit to learn more about my inquiry. However, I'm feeling extremely overwhelmed in the moment, as many of you can obviously relate to when dealing with an infestation.

I believe a dry vapor steamer might be the best or only viable route for me, that a garment steamer might be the wrong route. I'm not sure if I can afford a dry vapor steamer. I've done a little bit of Google searching and not found many answers or many dry vapor steamers, so far none that are handheld for around or under the $200 mark, instead only $4,000 industrial ones. Finances have been tight, but if it doesn’t make any sense for me to get a dry vapor steamer (if a garment steam won’t do AKA will ruin my gear), I'm sure a family member would be open to helping me out a bit there—but certainly not to buy one that’s $500.

My concerns with the garment steamer and why I'm thinking a dry vapor steamer might be best:

I'm looking to steam: backpacks, footwear, authentic Mexican blankets, alpaca wool blankets, yak wool shawls, pashmina scarves, rain gear (jacket, pants), hemp clothing, and suits, as well as throw/mediation cushions, pillows, mattress and padded furniture E.G. IKEA POANGE chair or a saucer chair.

I've never used a steamer, and I seem to be getting conflicting information online from the little bit of research that I've done.

It seems that a garment or wet steamer could cause mildew and mold in backpacks, cushions, pillows and mattresses or any padded furniture. It also seems this type of steamer could ruin backpacks, footwear, and delicate fabrics such as those that I've listed in the following ways:

- Adhesive delamination
- Synthetic melting
- Leather and suede damage
- Felting and shrinkage
- Gravity stretching
- Stiffness and water spots
- Canvas and interlining distortion
- Mineral stains

Is there a way to successfully use a garment steamer for these items WITHOUT ruining them?? If so, how?? I haven’t got the funds to take all of this to the dry cleaners. Finances have been tight. And/or can anyone recommend a dry-vapour steamer with nozzle extensions for the hard-to-reach places in a backpack, for example, for under or around the $200 mark? I mean, even if it’s $300... I’m desperate. This situation is messed. I could say a lot more about this situation and ask for guidance along other lines, but this is the most pressing right now. Any guidance would be deeply appreciated.

P.S. if I don’t get back to anyone’s replies, please know that it’s due to extreme overwhelm, ADHD, etc. and that I truly appreciate it nonetheless.

TIA!

Is this situation hopeless? What’s the deal with this exterminator’s advice?

We have bed bugs.

I live in a one bedroom suite with a flatmate in a 100+ year old apartment building. I’ve been staying in the bedroom, and my flatmate in the living room.

An exterminator came by, and after taking a look at my flatmates futon mentioned that based on the bugs activity (the amount of bugs, the eggs) they’ve been there for 6 months.

My room, on the other hand, hasn’t shown any signs of eggs. Keep in mind, I’ve been sleeping on a 1cm IKEA rug/runner which I roll up and store in my closet during the day—if that makes any difference. Although I did notice a nymph and a fully grown adult crawling on my pillow as I was propped up laying there reading a couple separate nights before the exterminator came.

Anyway, it’s evident we have bedbugs.

I’ve been doubting the exterminator. He’s already come for two separate treatments using steam treatment each time and one chemical ‘cracks and crevices’ spray the treatment and a different ‘cracks and crevices’ chemical spray the second treatment two weeks alter. He’s to come tomorrow, 2.5 weeks after the last treatment, to do some sort of a fungi treatment that has spores which spread to other bugs or something. The doubt comes from the advice he’s given. My father shared the narrative that ‘exterminators make their money from repeated treatments’ and yet obviously if they don’t do a good job then they don’t get a good review and that affects their business. The exterminator, a young guy, is evidently a business man too. He’s charismatic, confident, assuring, etc. Yet, when I expressed my concern about the possibility of all of my clothing — being 100% cotton — shrinking in the dryer to the point of it all no longer fitting me (a fair sum of money / hassle if i’d have to buy new clothing), he mentioned i could just put the clothing in a bathtub of the hottest water the tub could produce *for 5 minutes* and that this would be sufficient…. meanwhile I called other exterminators and read varying and conflicting info online suggesting anything from ‘you need to dry-treat it in an industrial dryer for 90 minutes’ to ‘30 minutes in your home/apartment dryer machine is fine’, etc. He’s told me it’s fine to keep my treated clothes hanging in the closet and in the dresser unbagged, as long as I dry-treat them again before each treatment.

When we were told about bedbugs, I had a panic attack the night before treatment. Treatment came so soon after it was confirmed we had bugs, and I wasn’t well prepared. I felt incredibly overwhelmed, and I felt that the situation was hopeless. Throughout the apartment there are 1cm-1/2” gaps between the floors and baseboards, i’ve literally had to ask my flatmate to clean up his crumbs layed out all over the dining table and counters and sweep up after himself after cooking because it looks like a cow had a feast in the kitchen, etc. so never mind his other habits and how he’d handle bed bug treatment and prep. On top of it all, him and I haven’t spoken in 6 months, so that’s been a huge contributor of stress and overwhelm at the whole situation. I digress. Our neighbour below us… 70+ year old blind hoarder with balance issues… who has no friends or family or anyone checking in on him… nasty smells (garbage, vomit, shit, death) coming from his unit every couple months… (but he’s still alive)… so… who’s to say the bugs wouldn’t just come back up to our unit from his after our treatment process seems to be complete — if it ever reaching completion — considering his unit might never properly be treated?

Our leasing company doesn’t care for the building properly… we’ve also had caretakers who barely did their job (who were fired a month and a half ago), e.g. not communicating with the exterminator for inspections of other units. As far as I figure, the whole building should be treated. All units should be treated at the same time. No? Don’t the bugs just run from one unit to the next? Anyway… I should probably just move into my own apartment suite, somewhere newer. Maybe even a factory unit with completely concrete floor, walls and ceilings. Finances (and mental/emotional health) have been a major stressor though, but I’m hoping I can get some assistance with that.

Does the situation here in this building sound hopeless?

How to disinfect these thrifted runners?

They look like they’re in gently used condition. I don’t have — and won’t go out to buy — disinfecting wipes. I’m not a fan of harsh chemicals. I have dish soap, vinegar, baking soda, and bleach (which i know is a harsh chemical) which i could dilute.

Maybe remove the insoles, then dip/soak paper towel on 1 part bleach to 9 parts water and layer the inside with that?

I’d prefer not to use bleach, but if need be I will. Most people used to use vinegar and baking soda for cleaning and disinfecting back several hundred years ago, no?

And how about caring for / disinfecting the soles?

I don’t imagine it’s necessary to really disinfect the outside. Or is that recommended for some reason?

P.S. I’m not super great at replying to all answers, however I genuinely appreciate them—TIA!

Should I attach the cross beam higher up or across the middle of this warped unit?

I bought this IKEA IVAR shelving unit despite many negative (and some positive/neutral) reviews.

Two of the side pieces are warped, and it’s currently incredibly unstable leaning far to either side without much encouragement. Should I place the cross beam higher up, along the middle of the unit or at the bottom for stabilization?

I’m not wanting to mount the unit to the wall as I live in an apartment (don’t want to add unnecessary holes) and I’m not even sure if this unit will be a good fit here or if I’ll want to switch it out in a month. If it wasn’t so wobbly, I’d feel confident not mounting it to the wall. I’ve never mounted book cases or other furniture to the wall over the many places I’ve lived. If this cross beam can help stabilize it enough, that’ll be fine—otherwise I’d need to return the unit or go to IKEA and start tearing open packages of the side panel “legs” to find some that aren’t warped 🤣 (seriously considering it… seesh… so many people have had this issue).

I know there are other posts where people get the advice to add a cross beam, etc. I’m asking *where* to add it.

TIA!
