At my wits end with removing pedals.

At my wits end with removing pedals.

Repairing a 28 year old bike given to me in pretty good condition. I've been working on it a lot hoping to ride/commute. These pedals are old, some bits broken and I want to replace them.

I've tried everything I can think of. I am pulling/pushing to the rear of the bike with all my weight. I have used PB Blaster. I've put a heat gun on it for at least 5 minutes. It just won't budge.

Any ideas?

Fixing up my high school yeti. Need advice on drivetrain.

Hi,

I've got my old yeti cross country hardtail from high school that I want to put back on the road as a gravel cruiser, cross country, light mountain bike with the family.

The chain is skipping which I'm assuming is a good indication that my drive train needs some replacement. Its never been replaced as long as I've owned the bike (that I remember).

Right now its a 3x7, and I wanted to get some recommendations/advice on what I should replace.

From what I can tell is:

Option 1, replace with a new 3x7 system

Option 2, replace with a 1x9, 1x10, 1,x11, 1x12 system.

Once I figure that out, then I need to get parts.

My initial thought is to keep it simple and stick with the 3x7,

If I go that route, what I think I need(Prices in CAD):

  • Front chain rings I think its a black spire, which is now defunked (it is bolted so maybe I can replace the old rings, although I'm guessing its not worth it.) and crankset. - replace
    • FC-M361 $80
    • or FC-M311 $50
  • Front derailleur looks pretty beat up - replace
    • Shimano FD-M310 $25
  • Chain - replace -
    • Shimano CN-HG71? $40
  • Cassette - replace -
    • Shimano CS-HG200-7 (12-32T) $30 CAD
  • New cables - replace
  • I think the rear derailleur is newish - reuse
  • Thumb shifters are still ok as far as I know - reuse

Total cost - $175

These part picks are basically me chat GTPing and googling, I'm totally open to suggestions.

$175 bucks seems very reasonable to me, so if there are suggestions on slightly more $ options I'm open.

Thanks

Project help!

I posted here a few weeks back about my project bike (Raleigh Medale, 63cm steel frame) that I've changed from a 5 gear bike, to a 7 speed (Shimano Megarange to help with the hills) - which required a Shimano Megarange deraullier...

My only issue now is, that ive had to install x2 deraullier hangers (1 on both sides) to ensure the deraullier is fitted (no deraullier hanger on the frame) but it means the wheel keeps pulling out when theres a lot of power on the bike (im a 120kg).

Any ideas;

- can I get anything welded to keep things in place, and should I?)

- is there anything out there that's a part that would solve my problem?

Any advice welcomed :)

Just got a third-hand bike, need help reviving it!

I bought an older Avanti Giro 51cm that was already bought secondhand and used as an indoor trainer by the seller I bought it from. There’s clear wear on some of the parts, could I please get help on how to go about fixing them and removing rust? Completely new to bike maintenance by the way.

breaking spokes on newly built wheel

I had the local bike shop build a rear wheel using my existing Chris King hub. After about 800 miles, a spoke broke, so I took it back to the shop. They replaced the spoke and trued the wheel, free of charge which seemed reasonable. Another couple weeks and 250 miles and another spoke breaks. Road bike, 28 spoke count, 700c halloy rim brake wheel. So what is going on here? Something wrong with my old hub that makes it likely to break spokes (seems unlikely to me)? Or is this shop just really bad at building wheels for someone my size? I am a pretty big boy at 100kg but I had not broken a spoke in nearly 40k miles on the old wheel.

Do you think this is safe to ride?

Took a spill and my bike took a small dent on the part of the rear triangle. It’s an aluminum frame

Should I Throw These Out?

Apologies abt the slight rant in advance!

Tbh I think I’m 99% sure that these are either beyond repair or not worth the money to try and fix.

I’m completely new to bikes and was offered two bikes from one of my coworkers as I mentioned I was thinking of getting a bike to commute to work but wasn’t bothered to pay such a hefty sum at once as I was saving for something else. I was also aware my work offers a cycle to work scheme but I was debating whether it’d be worth it as I’d be leaving my job soon anyways so I’d have to pay a lump sum anyways when I eventually leave.

Initially, my coworker heard that I was looking for a bike and asked me to send my address as they had two old bikes that they don’t use and could give them to me for free, and I did bc I knew if I didn’t send it then I’d probably forget to later. Two hours go by and I thought they hadn’t seen my text as it didn’t come up as read and they hadn’t replied. And tbh I thought we would begin discussing when to drop it off and talk a bit more abt the condition of the bikes but to my dismay my coworker had already dropped it off at my house while I was out after work. I didn’t get the chance to ask them to send any pictures of the bikes either as I wasn’t expecting them so soon. So my dad essentially opened the door to what looked like a random person dumping two bikes meant for the dump outside our doorstep!

When I got home my dad was a bit angry and he made it clear that it was insulting that my coworker thought they could drop the bikes off in their conditions. They didn’t even bother to clean them or anything but in my opinion I don’t think cleaning it would’ve made any difference! Once I saw them I thought that it’d probably be worth my money to go on the cycle to work scheme than try to revive these but I was wondering what others might think first so I decided to post this here.

I definitely should’ve asked for them to send the pictures of the bikes in advance so it’s my fault for not communicating that but I honestly didn’t think they’d send them mere hours after chatting.

Any estimations of costs and opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Stripped left side thread on Rudy rock shox safe to ride?

I'm dumb and have managed to strip a thread on my fork a day before my trip.

I have Rudy Rockshox fork and the through axle has two parts. One small that threads to the fork one the left side of the bike and into which the other through part threads.

I have managed to strip the thread on the fork. The axle can still be bolted together but it is not fixed to the fork with the first thread.

Is this safe to ride for 3 days on gravel roads or should I bail?

Is this actually a tubeless ready rim? Schrader drilled is a problem.

These were sold as tubeless ready rims. They seemed to seal fine EXCEPT that I could not get a seal with the Schrader tubeless valves I used. The width of the valve seemed to be impinging on the bead so I kept losing air there. I gave up and used tubes but should I try again?

Uncommon bottom bracket tool needed for Trek FX

I have a 2014 Trek FX 7.3. The bottom bracket is creaking like crazy, so id like to replace it. I need a removal tool in this style, however my bikes BB needs a 16 tooth version where every 4th tooth is double wide like i drew up here. I have not found been able to find any tool like that. Park Tools BB identification guide doesn't even mention this kind. Can someone point me in the right direction here?

Question about bike repairs and checkups

So I have a Trek Marlin 5 Gen 3, and I’ve had it for about two years. I basically only ride it during the summer, and I’ve ridden it around 50 separate times, mostly on pavement and grass, with no more than about 5 hours total on trails.

When I bought it, the guy at the bike shop mentioned bringing it back after about 50 rides so they could check something with the shifter and the chain. I was wondering if that’s actually necessary, what exactly they’d be checking or adjusting, and whether it’s something I could do myself.

Also, since I got the bike, I’ve noticed that when I shift while pedaling, it feels more aggressive like it jerks and is a bit rough or violent.

New derailleur hangs loose

My friend just got a Primos Superdame that comes with LTWOO eGR groupset. Built up the bike, but the derailleur was pre-installed. After setting everything up, we noticed that (a) the chain looked loose on the smallest sprocket (b) the derailleur moves back and forth on the axis of the swing arm (c) the b-limit screw does nothing (d) the upper jockey wheel makes contact with the cassette. Anyone know why this might be? Is the derailleur installed incorrectly?

Adhesive Removal

What’s the best way to remove sticky adhesive from my cantilever rims? I have a wheelset I’m getting rid of that had reflective tape on it and it’s been a PITA getting the tape off, now I have the sticky residue to remove before I post for sale. Any suggestions?
