Is There Such a Thing as an Under Desk Pilates Chair Style Pedal?

The other day I noticed someone using an mini treadmill with a standing desk and I had a thought. What if I were to sit on a wunda chair and press the pedal down with my feet while working? I love my pilates workouts but spend far more time at my desk.

I looked at several chairs and am considering ordering one but then thought all I really need is the pedal part and if there is an underdesk version of that it would be better because there is no need to switch off between desk chair and wunda chair all the time. Does such a thing exist? If so, what is it called and where can I get it?

The Sleep Specialist Says I Have Severe Sleep Apnea But I Sleep Fine?

I have extremely high blood pressure when not taking blood pressure meds. Like 190/120 high. But it always goes down to normal when I take the meds. Because of the blood pressure, doctors have repeatedly asked me to do a sleep study and for years I said I wasn’t interested because I sleep fine. Recently I gave in because I got a Garmin watch that tracks nighttime pulse ox and see that my nighttime pulse ox lows dip into the high or even mid 80s, which I know can be an indication of sleep apnea. I have also been told I snore rather loud.

I was shocked to see that I am rated as having “severe” sleep apnea. It was an at home sleep study, not sure if those are as accurate as the in-lab ones.

But here’s the thing - I have always sleep like the dead and I generally awake feeling well rested. I am sometimes groggy when I first wake but in an “I’m not really awake yet” sort of way and not an “I’m tired and need more sleep” kind of way. I never get sleepy during my normal waking hours. I never take naps or feel the desire to do so. Most days I feel mentally sharp.

I have used wearables for about the last 10 years and they always report that my sleep quality is good to great. This has been consistent over multiple devices, including different brands. I know sleep tracking with wearables isn’t super accurate but I would think a “severe” apnea would show some level of sleep disturbance on a wearable. I have very few awakenings or restless moments, most nights 0 or 1 awakenings, and 20-30 restless moments. Garmin rates anything less than 5 restless moments per hour as excellent, so I always rate excellent in this category. My sleep stages breakdown sometimes has me low on one of the sleep stages, but not in a consistent way. For example, last night I got an ideal amount of deep sleep and less than ideal REM, but 2 nights ago it was the opposite. My current wearable doesn’t track sleep stage averages but I had one for years that did and my weekly averages were pretty consistent with ideal amounts of deep and light sleep and a mild overabundance of REM sleep.

I guess I’m just wondering if this is true for anyone else and whether it’s possible to get perfectly good sleep and still have severe sleep apnea? If so, does the apnea actually need to be treated?

I can’t do the CPAP. Tried it and felt like someone was violently pushing air down my throat in a way that felt terrifying. I describe it as being waterboarded but with air. There are other treatments but they are invasive and expensive. I really don’t want to do them, especially since I seem to sleep fine, but I also don’t want to ignore what the sleep specialist is telling me is a severe health risk.

If it matters, besides the blood pressure thing I am in good to average health. I have no other health conditions, am middle-aged, exercise regularly (4-5x a week), eat an average quality diet, and am mildly overweight with a BMI of 28. I drink occasionally but not regularly and do not smoke.

Going From Reformer Pilates to Lagree

I have been doing reformer pilates for about a year and love it. I have watched some videos of Lagree and am interested in trying it, and there is a nearby studio that does it. I am scared that it will be too intense for me though. The videos look pretty hard and much higher intensity. I currently do Club Pilates 4-5x a week, doing an equal mix of Flow 2.0 and 1.5 classes, plus a Circuit or Cardio Sculpt class most weeks. I am middle aged and mildly overweight. I am much stronger now that I have been doing pilates but not especially strong. Would I be able to do Lagree classes? Is there anything I should be able to do before trying?

Claiming the sample as part of the apparatus?

I have a case where the applicant has amended a claim to an analysis device by adding a description of the sample. Not in the usual "material worked upon" way but as though it's part of the actual structure of the device. The claim looks like this;

An apparatus comprising:

[structural components];

a polymer comprising [details of sample composition]; and

[more structural components].

How would you handle this?

Lean Mass Achieved!

I am coming up on a year doing pilates now and love it. I have found the exercise program that I love and would do purely for pleasure. Today I got my body fat percentage measured for the 1st time in my life, via hydrostatic weighing, and was pleasantly surprised to learn my percentage is 4% lower than predicted from my BMI of 29 (was 31 when I started!). My fat free mass index is 19, which is high for a woman. I don't do any other exercise regularly and have a sedentary job so that's all pilates at work! So pround of myself for building all the lean mass!!!

Tips for Short Spine

I recently started taking 2.0 with an instructor I hadn't before and she teaches short spine, which the other flow 2 instructors I'm used to don't. I have done the move a few times now and am getting the hang of the articulation part but struggle to get my legs up to the top. The instructor suggested I hold the posts to make it easier and that has helped but still a struggle. Any suggestions? I don't have a reformer at home but if there are prep exercises I can do with a mat I can practice those at home. I also have a magic ring.

Was it always the women that are infertile?

In the Handmaids's Tale it's really the men that are infertile, which is why June takes up with Nick to get pregnant. But the testaments shows that many women, both in Gilead and Canada, never get their periods. There also appears to be a lot of miscarriages, so the men clearly have sperm capable of insemination. Did Atwood decide to switch it and now we just accept that it's really the women? Or at least that is was always as much the women as the men?
